Good morning tribe. We're going to try and stretch out our grocery run until Monday. That means that I have to get super creative w/my menus. Tonight if my broccoli is still good I'll make chicken teriyaki bowls. If not, I'll make pasta ameretriciana and salad.
What's on your menu?
Now that we've been doing this for several weeks has this changed your cooking style? If you normally ate out are you cooking at home or doing takeout? What's your style these days?
I'm cooking a lot more. W/just dh I only have to cook a few times per week, cause he enjoys rechauffe. However, I have a houseful of hungry guys and if you feed them they will snarf. Are you trying new recipies? Are you baking more? So, I cook most nights and we do takeout once per week. That's my daily job during this weirdness. I should bake more, but I've been a been tired. I'll probably do a banana bread w/some bananas that are ready for it. I'll bake cookies at some point, as well. What about you?

Tonight looks like fajitas.

I don't know what we're having. I have a bag of baby spinach I bought intending to make spinach and mushroom omelets, but used all the mushrooms for something else. Maybe we'll just sautee the spinach with olive oil and garlic and have it with frozen salmon filets and rice. That would be easy and healthy. Yeah, that'll work.
We totally stopped dining out. Since the first Saturday in March, every meal we've eaten has been prepared at home. Now, that could be as simple as baking a frozen pizza and putting a salad together. Or opening a can of soup. But no restaurant trips, no takeout, no drive throughs.
And that's okay. We're managing just fine. We're buying a big variety of staple products every couple of weeks and making meals from what we have. Not planning meals then going to buy the ingredients for them every couple of days like we used to. Or just getting takeout if we don't want to cook. It's a make do mentality.
Which is good, TBH. Where we are moving to is an old neighborhood off a rural highway between two small towns. Aside from a convenience store and a Dollar General, the closest actual supermarket will be like 20 minutes away. So we needed to get used to shopping and cooking differently anyway. Making do with what we have on hand will be our new normal from now on.

I'm more aware of making meals that will yield leftovers for lunch. With DS here, I'm making more things that can be doubled ~ some that I had halved when it was just DH and me. We've ordered pizza twice but that isn't anything new. We rarely eat out ~ that's a choice I make. Last night we had Stuffed Red Bell Peppers. They were yummy! Tonight I'm not sure ~ maybe Chicken Noodle Soup. The hair trimmer I ordered from Costco is supposed to arrive today. Thank goodness because I just read in the paper that hair salons won't open for months. At least for us common folk.

We used to eat out once a month or so, and rarely did takeout - I'd get pizza once in a while when DH was travelling for work. Now, we are cooking at home all the time - we've had takeout once in the past 5 weeks. It helps that DH is working from home, and is therefore home earlier and is cooking a couple of time during the week as well as his normal weekend. We do a weekly plan on Saturday to try to cut down on grocery shopping trips, but it isn't a real chore here to go shopping - no long queues to get in or out and only a short walk or train trip to get there. It is more about cutting down how many times we go into shops. I am trying to vary our menu a bit - we keep a list of dinner ideas on a whiteboard and use that to help with menu planning. We've always done a variety - different meats, different cuisines, weekly meatfree and fish meals - and that hasn't changed. We have found a few new recipes, some of which will become regulars.
Dinner tonight is a new recipe, inspired by DH seeing it on an ad for a TV foodie show, tandoori chicken. He marinated the chicken thighs in yougurt and loads of spices this morning, and will cook it on the grill, as we don't have a 'real' tandoor! When he stirred it up at lunchtime, it smelled really good. There will be fragrant rice and a veg of some sort as well.

DH and I cook/bake dinner a lot. But now that it's getting warmer, I'm really wanting to go on a dinner ride on the motorcycle with DH. I think that's one of the first things I want to do when things reopen.
I'm making cheesesteak sloppy joes and baked fries for dinner tonight.

We're having turkey and wild rice soup. Since I have nothing to make a salad with except the dressing, I'll make rolls instead.

I am still cooking every night, altho' I also have a dh that likes rechauffe and he loves grilling. We have tons of meat and fish in the freezer so we don't buy any nowadays. I do feel the need to use something from the pantry every time I cook so that my hoard lessens. I did an assessment of my pantry shelves this morning and it appears as though I need to start making things from tea, or maybe from the tea bags or even the goll durn boxes the tea bags are in (wonder if dh likes chopped cardboard in his baked beans??). I have way too many bags of tea. I like to try new teas and then some turn out nasty so I keep them, hoping the 2nd time I use a nasty bag will be the charm. What in the Sam Hill is going on in my thinking??? I do bake bread. I have not baked cookies or much other sweet stuff because I would eat ALL of it. I am going to make two pies to take to friends tomorrow. They are having a social distancing crawfish boil with us on their deck (one a Lousteau from Gonzalez, cadoodlebug ). One pie is blueberry and I'm trying to save flour so I'll make a crumb topping for the top layer on that. The other is chocolate which speaks for itself with one crust. We are having a pasta dish with grainy pasta, a white sauce, and some pantry vegetables. And cheese. Cheese covers a multitude of sins or a multitude of frozen and canned vegetables! Thanks for the thread. I grew up in a house of boys, too, scrapmaven , Oh Queen of the Boy House! My mom always said that one of my brothers was born with a zipper under his belly button that he just shoveled food into. She was way ahead of her time with bionics!

Hi Everyone!
I have been cooking more. Since everyone is home, everyone is eating all meals here. The boys do occasionally make breakfast sandwiches for everyone. But I do the dinners.
Since it’s storming here today and tomorrow; I have told the three of them we are having chili tonight and I didn’t tell them that I am also making cornbread.

They are having a social distancing crawfish boil with us on their deck (one a Lousteau from Gonzalez, cadoodlebug ) You're killing me! Actually the last crawfish boil I was at was last September ~ the night before we left for Italy! Our old termite company that DH used for clients for decades has one every year to thank his realtor clients. He makes big pots of gumbo and crawfish. I always take him pralines. DH is embarrassed by the mounds of crawfish I eat and, in fact, I have had passersby be astounded by the pile of crawfish shells in front of me. Enjoy the crawfish and eat one for me. Do you suck the heads? I always mention that when I'm teaching people how to peel them.

We are eating about the same. If anything, we've done more take out in the past month as a way to support local places.
I'm donating blood at 5:15. It took forever to find a local blood drive!. DH will be fine at home with lasagna or pot roast.
A lovely cool and overcast day. I'm trying to get some new plants in before the hot weather returns.

We are doing take out once or twice a week. The only thing that has changed for us is that we've had trouble receiving our Home Chef box. So I've had to think a hell of a lot more about what I'm cooking. Which I find taxing. I much prefer to choose a meal and have everything delivered to me with complete instructions on how to cook it. God, that makes me sound spoiled.
Tonight will be a family dinner. Home Chef meal. Steaks with roasted red pepper sauce, potatoes and asparagus.

Now that I'm home alone I cook only once or twice a week I am addicted, as you know, to brie and proscuitto on melba rounds as a meal ... also a certain "Southwest" bagged salad is a fav ... yup, I'm lazy I order pizza or get takeout more often than I should After cooking almost every single night for 22 years I don't feel guilty My mum is coming over for lunch today and I am making the beef soft tacos for us that I didn't make for myself last night ... she's super excited because she never makes that for herself I have no idea what I'm having for dinner because I have to do that whole dd#2 math tutor driving thing I described the other day ... how much do you want to bet it turns out to be brie and proscuitto

I am making cube steaks and mashed potatoes. I'm sure some vegetable will be involved.
For lunch...I am making chili dogs and fries in the air fryer.
I have definitely been cooking a lot more. We have gotten take out dinner only twice in the last 7 weeks. We used to eat out quite a bit. I have gotten a coffee a few times through one of our drive thru huts. We also have been baking more, heck I used to not really bake at all.

jeremysgirl, you don't sound at all spoiled. You sound like someone who works full time and wants to make dinners organized and easy to plan. I don't blame you one bit. When the kids were in preschool I used to do Dream Dinners once per month just to have some meals ready to go. desertgirl , your mom totally understood boys. Yds is 6'1" if not taller and he's a beanpole. However, the Hoover is strong w/in him. Where does he put it? He tends twd healthier snacks, but we always have a big tub of Red Vines in order to make his tummy a happy place. You're welcome, dentist!

We ordered pizza last night after we closed on our re-fi and we will have leftovers tonight. I did an Instacart order for Costco today, hoping to get one of the meats I tried to get last week and couldn't. I am now the proud owner of Costco sized packages of Steaks, pork chops and pre-seasoned ribs. oops!
We are all trying to stop eating like assholes, so the timing wasn't great! Ribs tomorrow, manicotti Saturday and then leftovers of those things Sunday and Monday.

I am still doing about the same, maybe cooking a little more on weekends then I would prefer! We get take out and drive throughs. Still haven't had the frozen pizza, I give up on deciding. LOL Tomorrow I work from home and I am looking forward to it. Even though the month end is "easy" by our normal standards, when you do it all alone with NO help, it is exhausting. And yes, there is someone here that is supposed to help, but after 3 different times of saying what I need and they say well I have to do this and that, I am DONE. I can't wait to have my co-worker back...

I'm not 100% sure what's for dinner because I haven't been out shopping yet. I'm alternating weeks between Trader Joe's and a local grocery store, and the local store has senior hours for 65+, so I don't qualify or feel the need to rush in early. Hopeful it will be like my last trip: no line and well stocked. This store has a sushi chef, so DS did point out I could get sushi for dinner. The first couple weeks of quarantine, DD and I were both baking and we seem to have replaced that activity with walking. It's getting a little competitive as she did 4.5 miles yesterday, so I walked 5 today. I am probably cooking one more day a week and really miss eating out whether at a restaurant or friend's house. I'm just tired of my own food and having to plan meals a week in advance that in the last couple weeks I spend more time than usual looking for something new to excite me.

Oh,I dunno, probably the rest of the meatloaf if no one else wants it. Or a fried egg sandwich. Or a bowl of cereal. Actually, even a bowl of ice cream is sounding pretty good right now!

It would be wrong to have ice-cream for dinner, right? Asking for a friend. . . It would be wrong if eaten alone. Needs to be accompanied by a pie (source of fruit) or Black Forest Cake or similar. Just dairy isn't too bad for a meal (think yogurt) but should have even chocolate, dark is the best, added to your meal.

I don’t eat chocolate but I lightly toasted a piece on banana bread, topped it with a couple of scoops of vanilla ice-cream, and drizzled some dulce de leche. That’s at least 2 or 3 food groups, right? ETA * I mean my friend did that! I obviously ate some thing healthy… Uhm…a kale and tofu bowl! Yep, that’s me - yum, yum. 😋

Of course we suck the heads, cadoodlebug! It’s the fun part and delicious. All of the boil stuff will be in the huge pot. I especially like the seasoned corn. I’ll eat some for you. It sounds like you are the boss of a boil😂!
