My daughter is graduating this week, without commencement from college, in four years as a 4.0 triple major. I know her accomplishment is not tied to the ceremony but today she was just so sad. She chose to stay where she is going to college (she lives off campus) and we are not able to travel to her currently. She knows we could not be more proud of her. But I so want to be there and give her a huge hug.
And can I say graduating into this economy SUCKS. She is headed to grad school, but my heart goes out to kids trying to start careers in some professions in this economy.

I’m sorry. I would be super disappointed, too. Dd3 is a junior and I am very much hoping next year will be back to the regular graduation ceremonies... congratulations to your daughter- she sounds amazing.

Same boat - daughter graduates college on May 20th.
Her path is going to be hard - drama major whose plan was to waitress in NYC while auditioning. Who knows what NYC is going to look like in a month or 6 months. And jobs are going to be hard to come by. Sigh.

Congratulations!! What an amazing accomplishment. What is she headed to grad school for? Either Penn State or University of Indiana. She was for sure going to Penn State but now the program she was going for is on hold/pending fall decision and IU starts sooner. She is graduating with polsci, philosophy, and spanish. She is pivoting to secondary education, with plan on education policy type phd. She kind of found a passion for that her junior year when she was involved in a program that brought philosophy curriculum to high school students. She is not sure teaching is her long term goal but she found she has a fervor for education. So she is switching a long term goal (law school) for a different path in an economy that SUCKS. Jobs are definitely going to be hard to find, especially those restaurant gap jobs. One of my son's best friends wants to head to NYC right out of high school for college in theater management. Her mom is pulling her hair out since it is at best 50/50 that an NYC university will have face to face classes in the fall. She wants her to wait a year. We live in a pretty large city with some excellent universities so she could do a year here and transfer. Best of luck to your daughter. She has to have a passion to put herself out there like that.

I'm sorry your daughter is missing her graduation ceremony. Her accomplishments should be celebrated!
I'm sorry for everyone who is missing graduation ceremonies and celebrations.
My own son is graduating from law school and his ceremony has been cancelled. His school has a very unique law school graduation ceremony which I've been looking forward to for three years. In the grand scheme of things, it's a small loss, but it's still a loss.

If she is really thinking about law school I would strongly encourage her to talk to some prescribing attorneys and really get into the day to day and financial side of what practicing really means. And the financial commitment and hit that law school is and the reality of jobs in the profession. There has been a glut of lawyers in many areas and it can be really difficult to find a job. Law school is expensive and the debt burden can be life changing. All that to say, most days I really enjoy my job and feel like I’m making a difference. I just really encourage young people to think about if it is necessary to do what they want, to ensure that they know what practicing actually looks like in the area their interested in and to weigh all that with the expense of law school

She thinks she is ultimately interested in policy, which MIGHT lead to law school later. She has been talking to a few people who are doing what she is interested in and they have all suggested a few years in the classroom before she leaps to education law or policy.

We are fortunate enough to be able to offer him use of our family beach house as a place to live until he gets he wheels under him. Working as an artist is difficult enough. Throw in today's situation...makes a mama worry.

Congrats to your DD on her accomplishments and I validate your sadness My DD's college grad ceremony was supposed to be Sunday. They are doing a virtual ceremony and will plan to do an in-person ceremony later. She fortunately hasn't been affected by employment issues, and has a Starbucks job plus paid internships with a City and a community garden. Originally she planned to leave for Asia after graduation to travel for 6+ months and apply to the Peace Corps. For now she'll stay put and keep working. She rented a super cute 1,700 s.f. apartment with a couple of friends so she's having fun at least.

I saw a news snippet that some kids are opting for more schooling now rather than jump into the job market because of the economic situation right now. My niece is graduating with an Art Major. Not sure what she can do with that if museums and whatnot are closed but she can work independently and build up a portfolio of work for later (although she probably has a good start on one from school).

He has found steady work at Trader Joe's. They promised to be super flexible for auditions, etc. after you work there for six months on their schedule. He feels supported by the company and likes how he is treated. Grocery store work is front lines these days and a bit scary, but thought I'd mention it.

My son "graduated" on Thursday. His degree is Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics (and maybe a minor in drones). His job outlook should be promising. He's already had some very promising interviews, but everything has slowed down so much that hiring is taking a while. I'm sad we didn't have a commencement to go to, but the school is planning one in August. If he is still in the state I think we will all go to that.
