I love my scrapbook room, but hate where my work table is. I have rearranged the heck out of everything, weeded out stuff (thank you January 30 day challenge) so the only things I have in here are things I love, but I still hate where I sit. I don't like to be between the table and the wall, but I want to face the door. I hate having my back to the door, but that is what happens if I make an L shape with two tables. I realize that without "seeing" my space it is probably hard to visualize, but it is driving me batty. I feel claustrophobic when I sit down to make stuff. I thought it might help me if I asked where other folks liked to sit, or how they worked, ect...for reference I have a handmedown table that is like a 5 foot folding table like you'd find in a church hall or whatever. Stackable. Thanks for any ideas! Edited to add, I found this article which I thought was interesting and might be helpful. We will see. www.thespruce.com/feng-shui-for-artists-1274793

I scrap at one end of my long, narrow living room. I have an IKEA table behind the couch. I sit between that and the wall, so I face the room and the TV. I have to be able to see outside, too. I can see out the LR and DR windows.
What is it that bothers you about sitting between the table and the wall? Could you move the table farther away from the wall?

My husband has the same thing about being back to the door.
Can you sit sideways to the door? Would that help? My husbands desk is to the left of the door in his office. I am sideways to my door as well, but only because I like to look out the window and the window is opposite the door. Do you have anything on the wall behind you? Can you put shelves there with storage so you don’t feel like you are sitting with your back to the wall?
I will admit none of this stuff would ever occur to me, so I may not be much help.
Maybe if you posted a sketch of your room for us to see, just a floor plan to see if we could help?

I think it is that its not open ended, I sit between the table and the wall, and then there is another wall to my right. So I am basically in a corner, and then when I pull my cart that I got at Michael's over, (LOVE that thing) I am totally boxed in. It just feels bad. I need to figure out how I can make where I actually work be more spacious feeling.

I have an ikea corner desk ( bought used ) in a corner of my bedroom. I have no issue with where I sit. The door is technically to my left not totally behind me but I’m not so sure it would bother me if it was. There is a window in front of me but I mostly keep the blinds closed so I don’t really benefit from the window. I do have an issue with storage & my own lack of organization. But that is totally my fault. I guess I ought to do something about it but I’ve been lazy.

What is the size of the room? Where are windows, doors, & other furniture in relation to your table right now (ie what is the layout & furniture placement of the room)? Consider positioning your table at an angle to a corner, so you would sit facing into the room with your back to the corner, be able to access the chair & your cart from either side of the table, & ideally see both the entry door & out the window(s) (ETA: like in this random photo found online).

is there some other way you can tweak the tables so they're not L-shaped? Can you maybe have one table in front of you and one table behind you? (but that would probably also make you feel boxed in...) End to end? Can you move it far enough away that you're not *right* inside the doorway? so it doesn't feel like the doorway is directly behind you?
I tried a lot of different things with my work surface, and ended up making myself a new, larger table out of a hollow-core slab closet door (36 x 82, I think) + two 4-cube units + short legs from Ikea-- and I put it smack in the MIDDLE of my craft room. My back is technically to the door, but I decided being able to see out the window was more important to me. I'm going to go read the article you linked, though... and I'll probably decide to rearrange my entire room again, lol.
Before, I had a smaller "real" desk (24 x 50, something like that), along with a small Ikea kitchen table, and I tried it everywhere... desk against the wall, perpendicular to the wall, etc. and I decided that 1) it wasn't BIG enough surface for me to spread out on like I like to be able to do, and 2) I wanted to be able to walk around the entire thing. For me, that meant having ONE large surface, RIGHT in the middle of my room (which is a small spare bedroom). Is it pretty? nope. I won't be getting any photo shoots done for a magazine layout, or anything like that... lol. But it's functional- at least the most functional setup that I've had so far. I have a wheeled cart at one end, and a Michael's wheeled storage thing at the other end, so from where I sit to work, it's a bit of a u-shape, but I can walk around the entire thing.

I used to have my rectangle table with a short end up against one wall. My back was to the door but I was more off to the side in a cozy little corner. It started feeling claustrophobic and eventually I moved my work table to the middle of the room and the doorway is in front of me to the right (I also didn't want my back to the door). Every wall has shelving/storage including a shelf/counter behind me so I can spin around and grab stuff that I want within reach. I can go around either way depending on what I need. It is a super crowded space (walkway is about 3-1/2' all around my table), but it feels so much better that I can circle around the whole room to access everything.
Could you get by with 1 table and get some sort of vertical storage to put things that would be on the table top? Or wall-mounted storage? I do have a couple areas of standing height counters against the walls that are maybe 20" deep and then limit myself to just my table and some rolling storage that I can pull next to the table.

My desk used to be L-shaped, but now I have them back-to-back in the middle of the space. A few months ago I switched my craft room (which was in the "bonus/family room" off the kitchen) with the dining room. I am much happier in this space, even though it kind of puts me in the middle of the house (open concept). My back is to a wall and I have a large window beside me. I can walk in a circle around the table, so no boxed in areas. I've included a couple photos below. Please ignore the mess! I haven't put things away yet after NSD activities and I have a load of laundry that needs to be put away, lol.

I LOVE the cage lights, you need to put a little HP creature in there! I too have an L desk, but am switching to a deeper and longer one and getting rid of the L, more like yours, I don’t know why I wanted an L shape so bad, it really isn’t workable for me.

infochick Skellinton Thank you! The light fixture & HP decor is leftover from when our dining room was in this space. While I'm going to the leave the HP gallery wall alone (NO WAY I will do that again while the memory of the time & effort is still fresh in my head, lol), I do want the light fixture to go into the "new" dining room so I can get something else.

Ryann , I LOVE your desk! And your storage solutions. TFS. @kendramage, I scrap standing up, and move around alot, so being trapped in a corner would not work for me. I have an L shaped office space off the end of our living room. In the wider part of the L, I have two counters, one on each side, and my work space is in the middle, moving from one counter to the other. I like the light from the window above one counter, but when that is too bright I can work on the one facing the wall. When I sit at my computer, it is in one corner away from the door, but I am facing sideways so I can see the door easily and don't feel trapped in. The end of the leg I am in holds the shelves with my albums. The narrower part of the L has most of my electronic tools, and storage for them and for card making.

grammadee How did you come to find out that you liked (prefer?) to stand while crafting?

grammadee How did you come to find out that you liked (prefer?) to stand while crafting? I am not sure when, but I knew that my back did not bother me as much in the kitchen when I worked at the kitchen counter which is 1 meter (39 inches) high. When I started setting up my scrap room, I decided to put in one counter unit (which I had custom built at a kitchen cabinet store). So I had a sit down desk on one side facing the window and a stand up counter along the opposite wall. I pretty quickly realized that I was working at the stand up counter most of the time. So when I had a chance to do the next phase, I removed the desk and put a long counter in its place. It suits my crafting process, too. I can step one way or the other to retrieve materials I suddenly "need" for a project. And a few steps take me to the stand (also counter height) with my dies and Vagabond on it, or the shelves beside it that hold my inks and brushes. I also have a place in the basement to store wet mixed media supplies, and when I am getting messy, I work on a big cardboard on top of the chest freezer down there. The little trips from one station to another give me a chance to think and imagine and plan on-the-go. What is funny is that I gave that desk to my dd who was working on university courses. She still uses it, but has purchased a podium type box to go on top of it so she can stand to do her work on the laptop or on paper.

I'm not grammadee , but I also stand quite often when I'm crafting- that's one of the reasons I wanted a new table, so that I could make it counter height. I do a combination of standing and sitting-- it just depends on what I'm working on. If I'm looking for papers, I'm standing (because they're behind me on a bookshelf). if I'm measuring, cutting, inking, etc. then I'm doing either. If it's really fine work (like adding stickles, etc.), then I'm sitting hunched over the project with my glasses off, so I can get a really close-up look at it. I hunch over when I sit at a regular-height table, and it hurts my back if I'm there for any length of time. I also have a tendency to get things crooked, so I would find myself standing quite often to get a better 'overhead' view of the page to make sure things are straight, or to get a more 'birds-eye' view for a better look at the patterns and colors. I figured I might as well have a desk / table that makes it easier to stand at, lol. I also have things stored behind me and at the side of my room on shelves, so standing makes it easier to walk around to get things if I need them. (or if I drop something on the floor- I'm also clumsy, lol.) I love going to crops, but I HATE the tables and horrible banquet chairs they have in those spaces. When I'm at a crop, I go between working at the table and working on the floor outside the conference room in the hallway, lol!

I like standing too, it is just more comfortable to me and like Crimson Cat said I can see if things are lined up better when I am standing,

(very envious of all the HP stuff on the walls, way cool!) Anyway, imagine if your walls on the short sides of your table were full walls and no glass door. I would be sitting at the Mac, and the table would be butted to the white shelving, (which would be a solid wall) so then I would be trying to eek out of the space between the table and that little white table/shelf, (which would be my wheelie cart) and in the meantime be backing into the wall all the time with my chair, (which is what happens now). I might try putting my table in the middle. I tried that once and didn't like it, because it isn't heavy enough to not move and go wonky all the time.

@kendramage Thank you! I have a couple more thoughts/ideas... First, where do you WANT to be sitting and what direction do you want to be facing? I would start with answering that question first, then see what you can do to get yourself to that answer. Maybe different furniture will help, or a new arrangement of what you currently have and love. Could you stack any shelving units/bookcases on top of each other as opposed to them sitting on the floor, etc. Things like that to reduce the footprint of your furniture. Also, could you invest in a desk that is permanent that has storage built into the "legs" of the desk so you might not need as much other storage areas in the room?

Also, could you invest in a desk that is permanent that has storage built into the "legs" of the desk so you might not need as much other storage areas in the room? Since I have a standing desk I have ( 2) 2x3 cubby units under my desk. Frees up so much floor space and everything is pretty much right where I need it to be. Also since you said the table goes wonky you could use the cubes to stabilize the table, but even if you want to sit the way Ryann has cubes under her desk could definitely help.

First - I'll join the "jealous of Ryann 's scrapspace group !!! Light! Pretty! Mac! Art! Cool!!! Next - I think it is that its not open ended, I sit between the table and the wall, and then there is another wall to my right. So I am basically in a corner, and then when I pull my cart that I got at Michael's over, (LOVE that thing) I am totally boxed in. This is my set up. I have no "space". Once I sit down, I box myself in with 2 raskog carts. I don't even have space to spin my chair. While I'd love more space, this set up doesn't bug me. It reminds me of forts when I was a kid. So much is within reach. I could have more roll around space if I put the table against the wall...but then I would have my back to the door and no view of the TV! So I'm no help to you

I am in a little box when I scrapbook. It doesn't feel good. Not a fort person, lol. More of a tree climber.
