When universities in the US all shut down in March, many of them, my daughter's university included, were shutting down right after spring break. Students were told they could come back and spend 15 minutes getting from they needed from their dorms and then go home to their families. Aat the time, schools were shutting down for 3 weeks. We didn't know it would be for the rest of the semester. Now, those universities are ending their semesters and asking students to come back and quickly remove the rest of their belongings.
My DD didn't live in a dorm, but lived in a rental house very near campus. We moved most of her stuff home in March, but didn't have room in the car for her dresser and desk. We need to go back now to retrieve them as her lease ends at the end of the month. But we live in KY and her house in in IN. And there are travel bans. Now I realize, no one is going to pull us over on the side of the road and arrest us for traveling, but the governors post these rules about how no one can travel out of state except for just a few reasons, and they don't take into account that students need to get back to retrieve their belongings. My daughter has friends here in KY who need to return to Cleveland, Boston and Philadelphia to get their belongings. There have to be students all over the country who need to travel for this reason.
Is your student one of those who needs to go get their stuff? We have it fairly easy. It's only a 3 hour drive, her bedroom is right next to the back door in her house and we can be in and out in half an hour without having contact with the roommate who still lives there. We're going to drive by campus, which will be deserted, then she'll jump out of the car, put on her cap and gown and take a photo by the university's sign. We'll hop back i the car, get drive thru food for lunch and head home. No exposure to anyone.

Ugh I’m sorry. We actually ignored ds’s university and had him put his stuff in storage and move out before spring break; the univ ended up closing the next week anyways.
It’s such a mess. You should be ok with your plan, hope all goes well.

We live 1.5 hours from ds's college. I saw the writing on the wall and had ds pack 96% of his stuff when he came home for spring break. We had to go get his fridge, mattress, desk chair, dresser thing and s couple of other things. We would have left about $400 behind had we not gone back.
Uwyo gave the kids up until April 5th to get their stuff or contact the school to work something out. The storage unit places gave kids like 2 months free if they needed it.
I was pissed that they waited so long to close the campus. Every college in Colorado had already announced and wyoming had to know there was a huge chance. They could have warned the kids before they left for spring break.

My dh and daughters drove three hours this past Saturday to clean out dd’s room. She had signed up for a time. They said it was a ghost town there (the window was pretty much the entire month of May). They drove straight there, ate a packed lunch in dd’s room, and headed back.
Apparently they stopped for gas on the way back and maybe used a restroom 😳, but they said the trip was uneventful. They wore their masks except for when they were in the dd’s room (which had been empty since early March.
We have to move my other dd to another city about five hours from here in a few weeks. We’ll likely spend the night in dd’s new place. I’m honestly dreading that whole trip for so many reasons.

I’d tell the roomie to sell them or list them for free, or leave them for the incoming roomies to have if they want them.

There was a point we were doing a cost benefit analysis of the cost of the room contents versus a return plane ticket too. I think that was what spurred ds to spring into action and get his stuff in storage at the time. Such a crazy mess.

Our middle son came home for Spring Break in mid-March and didn't have time to go back for his belongings. We didn't feel it was safe for him to travel back up, plus he was busy almost every week since then with tons of homework. He just finished his last final last night and headed back up today. He has to turn in his instrument and return a book to the bookstore, etc. He has a 12-month lease and isn't moving next year (senior year), but he left his full computer and second monitor, lots of clothes, etc. up there. He had traveled to Tucson with just a few sets of clothes, his electronics and his laptop. He has to take a couple summer school classes, but are deciding on where he'll take them (all classes are online through June), in Tucson or Flagstaff. Depends on where he can get a job in Tucson or keep his old job in Flagstaff, since he was furloughed in early April.

DD's University had an early Spring Break (1st week of March) and they never went back afterwards - she came home with her laptop and a laundry basket of dirty clothes.
She was in a dorm - she got an email last week letting them know they had two options - they could sign up to have their belongings packed and stored/shipped by a designated moving and storage company at their own expense (they included the price list - it was relatively reasonable actually for the pack and store option) or they could request an appointment to retrieve their belongings themselves - we're only 3hrs away so we picked that option.
We haven't received the app't information yet - it'll be sometimes between the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June. She'll have a two hour slot, she can bring up to two additional people, face masks must be worn, social distancing must be maintained...
Dh will drive her down and help pack her up.

We are moving my DD out of her dorm tomorrow. She brought home a lot of stuff at Spring Break but probably has 1/2 of it left like her dorm fridge and a bunch of clothes. We had to set up an appt time (2hr window), she can only have 2 helpers, we have to wear masks and maintain social distancing with others. We are 1.5 hrs away so no worries about staying over. My DS is living in an apt there so we will see him.
It was my understanding that this is deemed “essential” and why we are allowed to travel to get our stuff. The University is giving us until May 31st to get belongings out of dorms. I do know parents/students have been been coming the past month to get their belongings. I’ve heard that the campus is a ghost town and it isn’t hard to maintain social distancing.

Ds got lucky at his dorm. They told them the Monday before Spring Break to get their rooms completely packed up and to please be out by Sunday. During his Spring Break it was announced they wouldn't be going back. They did open a floor in one of the dorms for students that needed more time or couldn't get home until summer.
I would do just what you are planning.

DS came home for spring break the first week of March with only a small duffel bag. He graduated on Sunday and his apartment lease is up at the end of May, so he and DH left this morning to drive 12 hours to Ohio to retrieve his stuff. All his clothes, two of his clarinets, and his car are still there. He's sold his furniture to a friend. They aren't worried at all about travel bans -- it's more of a PITA thing.

I hired a storage company to come in and pack up DS' dorm room. They packed it up last week and they'll be moving all of the rooms they packed in the dorm to storage at one time when the university gives them permission.

DS' university was supposed to be closed for a few weeks, but that changed within a week of him coming home;. We drove up and packed up his things and his roommate came back a week or so later. There was incentive for getting out - refund of housing!
I would go in your situation. You have to get it done.

DD has been back and forth 3 times packing up her apartment that is 500 miles away. No problems or issues driving across 4 states. She goes and stays for 2 weeks there and attends her online classes, then comes back with another load and stays here for 2 weeks. She’s been taking my husband’s pickup truck and filling it to the brim each time (there is a cover on the back.). One more trip should do it, she’s going to sell her couch next time she goes.

In the same boat - we are leaving tomorrow for a long road trip to retrieve his stuff. At least it is a pretty drive and it will be kinda nice to get out of town. And it’s a beautiful time of year. Trying to look on bright side!

Thankfully this has been my biggest concern about this. Dd flew home for spring break and while she was here, things started hitting the fan. All her belongings and her car are in FL, we are in NJ.
Her school is a one year school that has stuff going on year round. They have camp and other stuff going on over the summer that is included as part of their grade. But they need to get their stuff out of their dorms.
She is due back May 30. They are planning on a modified version of camp. So how to get her down? And what to do with her stuff? Plus coming from NJ she needs to self quarantine for 2 weeks when she arrives in FL.
I will not put her on an airplane. Compressed air... nope. Not right now. I don’t like driving long distances. I really don’t want to have to drive her to FL and come back. But I will if I need to. Plus I’m not one who can do it in one day. Where would I be able to stop along the way that would be open?
Good news for us! Bad news she is leaving me THIS MONDAY. Good news, she is going to quarantine with her boyfriend’s family for 2 weeks. His parents will drive them both back to school and will bring her stuff back. They can hold it at their house til we are able to get it in August.

When DD was home the second week of March for Spring break she got the notice that her university was moving to online classes but would open the dorms for 4 days so kids could retrieve essentials.
Since we only live 90 minutes away we went down and packed up a huge amount of her stuff and filled the car to the brim. Down and back no stops for gas.
Now she had to make an appointment to retrieve the rest of her belongings. They have spread the appointments over a 3 week period with a limited number of appointments--a 2 hour window each--with only 2 people allowed with the student and masks worn by all and no getting on the elevator with anyone not in your party.
DD is a resident advisor and I am so happy that the housing department is not making her work during these move outs. Plus, they continued to pay her salary until the end of her contract.

DD came home with just a small bag in early March. Her car is still at her rental house and she is moving to a different location with a rental agreement already signed. Plus she is a 9 hour car drive away. So she is going to catch a ride with her “Big Sister” in two weeks. Finish out the term (ends mid June) in rental A, move her belongings (no furniture) into rental B and drive home by herself. It’s either drive with a friend or fly and supposedly the Big has been quarantining as well so thinking this is the best option.

This is from an article in Kentucky where we live: "Last week, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear signed an executive order that prohibits Kentuckians from crossing state lines, save for a limited number of exceptions, including employment, trips for necessary supplies or to seek medical care. While the Democrat and neighboring Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, have been lauded by political allies and opponents alike for their decisive action in response to the Covid-19 outbreak, the interstate travel ban marked a decisive shift in tactics. More than the reiteration of guidelines for social distancing or closure of nonessential businesses, Beshear’s executive order subjects violators to possible criminal prosecution, and also requires residents currently located in another state to submit to a 14-day quarantine upon their return to the Bluegrass State."

Ds and his roommates are moving out of their Chico house at the end of the month (they didn't all get along as well as they hoped). Dh and he will be going up, moving it all out into storage and helping clean it up. I helped him move in so dh can help him move out. He hasn't found a place for next fall but agrees no matter what he wants to move back up there. Probably we will put our name on a two bedroom apartment and find a second mate.
He brought most of his stuff down back in March but he has lots still up there. I know the Chico students who lived in the dorms have still not been able to get there stuff and the semester ends in 7 days.

I don't think that we will have any problem getting to and from DD's school to retrieve her stuff, I just am frustrated that students all over the country are dealing with this and states like KY and OH still have bans on traveling between states. I don't think they are having cops pull people over. I just think governors might want to be aware that this is a concern for a whole lot of students.

Hotels, grocery stores, gas stations and drive thru restaurants are open all over the Southeast. You wouldn't have any issues at least once you get past Virginia. I have no idea about further north.

SO many kids and parents are going through this and some are thousands of miles away. I am grateful my son is in an apartment. Honestly, I agree with others. If it is just a desk and dresser, is it really worth it? I mean gas alone seems like it wouldn't be worth it. Your point about others, though, is good. I know my son would help out anyone nearby him. Maybe there are people nearby who can help.
