I picked up a group of girls the other day and one of them mentioned she had never had a female driver in all the time she had been using Uber, which apparently has been a long time. Do you think it's weird to be a female and drive for Uber?

I've only ever had one in all my Uber rides. I liked it - I felt extra safe, not that I've necessarily felt unsafe with male drivers. It was kind of like my mom driving me

I've thought about doing it and still might when I get a different car. I might not do the late night bar scene but then don't know I would make much if I didn't have that availability. We've done Uber quite a bit locally (northern San Diego) and in San Francisco and we've never had a female driver.

I had a female Lyft driver and it was the first time I'd had that with both Lyft and Uber. She told me to sit in the front and we chatted. Come to think of it I've never had a female taxi driver but I know they exist because I've seen them on the news. lol

People are the most fun then.

Not weird, no. But definitely unusual. I've never had a female driver of any type:limo, towncar, Uber, taxi.
Good for you for doing it, though. How is it as a job? Is it true that you're not supposed to accept tips? Do you get tips anyway? What are the best and worst parts of the job?
I think the Uber service is fabulous, and now use it exclusively when I'm over in the city.

I think the Uber service is fabulous, and now use it exclusively when I'm over in the city. Damn, I was in the middle of answering you and got signed out! The best part is that I get to decide when I work and when I get to be done working. I don't have to ask anyone's permission to go home early or take a day off, or if I want to keep working to hit a specific goal in earnings. I also don't have to stand on my feet all day. I like that they've made it as easy as possible even if you may not be completely familiar with the streets. What I don't like is when it says turn right on such and such street, trying to decide in a split second which of the 3 right turns in front of you is the the right street and remaining smooth about it. That's more a problem with the way the city streets are layed out though. Uber advertises to riders that a tip isn't necessary because they tout it as a cashless service, but some people still tip. Uber tells you to tell them it's not necessary but if they insist, to graciously accept it. Ive never had anyone say anything bad about using Über. Everyone just loves it.

My 17 yo DD hates when I use it because of a story out of SF where a driver hit a customer with a hammer. I just say "hey, weird things can happen anywhere" and go on with my Ubering. It's great for when I have to be somewhere, even somewhat close by, and DD has the car. I just Uber it then. Some Refupeas will think I'm nuts but 14 yo DS has even taken it to school sometimes (I'm now gone in the morning). Usually DD takes him with her but if she's not going in or running late, he just takes an Uber. I love that I can watch the car along the route and have info. on the driver.

I'm not a fan of Uber at all (and would never use it), but while rare I don't think that a female driver is really all that weird.

maybe what prevents there from being more women drivers is that they don't feel safe? you pick up strangers and are seated in a position with your back to them, where it would be easier to overpower you or threaten you to drive somewhere and be raped. as a rule i don't worry about things like that, but it IS putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation by inviting strangers into your personal space.

I've taken Uber 4 times and 2 of them were women. Both had husbands in the medical field where they were away at odd hours. The women were bored, so they became Uber drivers.

If you think about it, I haven't seen that many female taxi drivers also. I don't use a taxi often but I've never had one. So to me it would be weird. We've used Uber 2x in Chicago and it was great.

I've been contemplating leaving my job. I wonder how much income I could replace between Uber and voice lessons and such.

No. I've often thought it might be a day filled with interesting people and stories. At my age, I'm not applying for a new career though.

Uber is a car service basically. You use the App to order up a car. You can track it to see where it is and it gives you info. on the driver. It also gives you a fare estimate. Prices do go up for popular events or evening, so you need to be careful. Anyone with a 2008 or newer car can become a driver (basically) and there are some fancier cars that may cost more too (Uber XL). We used it San Francisco and I sometimes use it locally here in Northern San Diego if I find that I need to be somewhere and teen DD has the car. There are competitors out now like Lyft and Sidecar.

I would be worried about the legal ramifications and safety too. Lots of drivers here are being fined. It is considered illegal in some areas because they aren't licensed.

Well, except taxi drivers. Uber and Lyft are causing a lot of contention in my city with the Taxi drivers trying to get it outlawed. They claim since they don't have to have the same licensing/training/liability as taxis they are undercutting them. There are always news stories about it as one or the other moves it forward with city council.
I wouldn't choose to use Uber, but I don't use taxi services either. I guess I just feel there is an extra level of protection with a company that is licensed with the city vs someone who signed up on the web. It may be as safe or safer, it's just a psychological/emotional barrier for me.

That it's not licensed or monitored in anyway. I feel that there is no recourse if anything happens and that people are much more vulnerable using people who are not "official".
