Also this is not some special flushable litter. I didn't know they made that. I would be scared to flush that too. Plumbing issues are scary to me.

That clumping litter is going to turn into a huge plug in the drain. A snake might work to bust up the clog, depending on where it is, but it also might just push it further down the line beyond the reach of the snake. If it were me, I’d call a place that clears sewer lines because it will be cheaper than a plumber.

Untwist a wire hanger and try to dislodge debris in the lower half of toilet pipe twist. When DS poo clogged toilet we used a tool that had a twisted pipe with a rotary knob (I can't remember what it was called)...

Our Municipal Government will come out , snake the system and put down a camera to check out the system for free.

Our drains were slow to clear so we had a drain line guy in and it was super expensive. So get prices if you need to go that route. My concern would be that even if you clear the toilet, i'm wonder if it will clog the lines below. Good luck, hope you can snake it and it causes no other issues.

flohawks.com/do-not-flush-cat-poop-down-your-toilet/Most cat litters are made from bentonite clay which hardens when it gets wet. Add some water, and you get a cement-like consistency. If you’ve ever waited too long to clean out the litter box, you know how quickly the litter can clump and turn into a solid force that is difficult to deal with. Imagine if the litter solidifies in your pipes – the solution may be costly. Depending on how clogged the pipes are they may require water jetting or, if they are completely blocked, the only solution may be to remove the pipes and replace them.

We used the flushable litter for a while and even that started to clog the pipes. OH had to get a long snakey thing to unblock it. We use regular cat litter now and it doesn't go anywhere near the toilet! I feel your pain.

Oh man, I'm sorry.
Yes, try a long snake/auger first.
Also, if there is visible litter in the toilet & tub, use a wet/dry shopvac to suck it out.
If not fixed by then, I'd call Roto Rooter or a plumber the specializes in sewer plumbing.

The fact that it's on the second floor makes me think this may be an issue best addressed by professionals. I'd be afraid everything you try might only make it worse. Especially since the 'culprit' admits to having done this numerous times.
Dang. Hopefully said 'culprit' becomes super helpful around the house in multiple other ways to make up for this expensive mistake.

If sewer water is now backing up into the bathtub, the serious clog is lower than the toilet itself. beachgurl, I would order a long snake from your hardware store - it sounds like this clog is somewhere down the line at this point. You can also try to order an industrial strength chemical clog buster and let that sit overnight. You may want to get a jug of the enzyme pipe clearer that you should regularly use monthly after you clear this clog. Since apparently your housemates flush things that shouldn’t be flushed.

In our area, they’re way less expensive per hour than a plumber. A lot of residential plumbers don’t have the big snake to clear the main line drains and they will end up referring you to a sewer company anyway. The sewer companies usually have the camera thing they can run down the line to make sure the line is clear.

We’ve had flushable litter and had to plunge (although that was as bad as it got), and that was the end of us experimenting with flushable litter (in fairness, I live in a 100+ year old house and who knows about the plumbing in here).

Go into the Houzz/Gardenweb forums and post your question under the plumbing topic. They may be able to assist you.
If you want, I'll ask the question and let you know what they say.

Back from hardware store that enforces a strict one customer inside at a time while wearing a mask rule. They strongly prefer that you order ahead. Wait for phone call. Drive to store then and message once in parking lot. Then you hold up paper with large name printed on it. They drop it in your trunk and wave goodbye. They are my new forever hardware store. Pandemic or not. They are no way making enough profit for the crap they are putting up with. Watched a woman try to break into their exit door 4 times. 6 foot tall sign telling you not to. Not wearing any mask. Her husband went inside, but adding her would be more than one, correct? Is this math actually hard? And no mask anyway. Had to station a large man there just to keep her out. That could have been one more person filling orders for the rest of us who were following directions and waiting IN our cars. Their system was working very well honestly. You can not order and have order shipped and they have signs and online notices apologizing for some higher than normal prices, but to keep things in stock they are needing to use additional suppliers. But check out what they have in stock. Disposable gloves. KN95 masks. Those cheaper blue fan fold masks. Paper towels. Shop towels. Hand Sanitizer. 4 kinds. All with correct alcohol strength. Lysol and Chlorox sprays. Disinfectant wipes. Bleach jugs and smaller bottles. Hand pump soap. Bars of soap. Isopryl Alcohol. Hydrogen Peroxide. Toilet paper. Bottled disinfectant cleaners. AND 10 lb.bags of Gold Medal flour and bags of sugar. I mean seriously these guys deserve every penny they make right now and have my enduring gratitude. Now to go and rotate snaking and praying. If this isn't an appropriate way to spend Mothers Day, I don't know what is. Your situation is worrisome, but that sounds like an awesome place to shop!

In my world the person who caused this mess would be the one dealing with it, including any and all expense involved plus the physical labor.

DH is a retired builder (not a plumber). He said you probably need to pull the toilet and snake the drain. The toilet and tub usually share a smaller drain line that eventually feeds into the main 3-inch line. The clog is probably in this smaller line.
Have you been able to retrieve any clumps? Are they rock-solid? Or are they mushy and likely to reform into larger clumps further down the line?
If they are rock solid, you may be able to break them into smaller chunks that will flow through the 3-inch line. If they are mushy, you might be making the problem worse.
Good luck!
And for what it’s worth, DH said you probably need to call a plumber.

You need a roto-rooter person.
As posted above- you put pulverized dry clay like substance Dian the toilet. That stuff is bad.

You’re not supposed to flush kitty litter. Always bag and toss.
I hope this won’t be too expensive to get fixed.

Also this is not some special flushable litter. Just the plain clumping kind of stuff you buy from groceries in huge heavy jug. Yes. I already know it shouldn't have been flushed. But trapped with these fools who obviously don't read the container the litter comes in. I cannot imagine who'd do this!!!!!!! We have the Tidy Cats Breeze System for our cats (we rigged ours up thanks to Victorian Cattery videos on YouTube). We have equine pine pellets that break down (just like the sawdust piles you see with horses) and it goes down to the bottom bin. The poop gets scooped out and you could flush it. There's no "litter" attached to it. Some people are so selfish and lazy!! Hope you could figure it out. Sorry. ETA: thank you for this thread! I just learned that even if it's pure cat poop, it's still dangerous to flush. Oh my... I'll have to now add it to my kitten's litter genie!!!!! (He's still using clumping litter)

My daughter tried to toilet train her cat and put litter in my toilet. The toilet hooked to a sump pump system in the basement. After we had spent $400 replacing the sump pump due to age. We were the unreasonable ones. 🤦🏻♀️
I hope you can get the line cleared. What a mess.

I’m sorry. I only know 1 person who did this and their pipes needs to be replaced. I hope you have better results.

Uggg! I think you're going to have challenge as all other posters have indicated as the litter does clump, expands and hardens. A snake you buy from the hardware store is probably not going to do the trick as they are not that long. You can rent a machine like plumbers use from places like Home Depot. Those snakes are like 50-200'. Auto–Feed Drain Cleaner Rental Good Luck!

Oh no! I don't know if you can still rent a snake from Home Depot or Menards. This may be the only thing you can try before having to call a plumber. Good luck!
