My DS was in the middle of getting work done in March when everything closed. He went in today to resume the process. I don't know what the precautions were because he came home and went straight to bed. But I imagine he was the only one in the office, no one allowed to wait in the lobby. It isn't something that can be pushed into the summer. Our regular checkups aren't scheduled until August.
My younger DS missed 2 Ortho appointments until he was able to get back a couple of weeks ago. Same precaution with no other patients allowed to wait in the lobby.

I had one appointment for a filling canceled because of COVID-19, but I went last Wednesday to repair a chipped tooth/loose filling. I have another appointment next Tuesday for a filling and then a 3rd and final one (for now) scheduled for June 3rd, but I might see if they have any cancellations. Thanks, Sjogrens, for ruining my teeth... 😢 I'm right there with you. I have to have so much work done and redone because of this stupid disease. Honestly, it's one of the worst impacts for me. I was a sophomore in college before I had my first cavity (in one of my molars). I now have them every visit, and most of them are on my front teeth. 😢 I'd actually had the problem years before my diagnosis, but that is also part of Sjogrens.

Are you in pain, or need any work urgently? If not, I would wait. Especially if the dental office workers might also spend time working emergencies at a hospital, or if they do surgeries and work alongside anesthetics. This. If you’re in pain or lost a crown or something, yes , go in. Dental pain always gets worse at the most inopportune time and can be agonizing. If just a routine cleaning, I’d wait.

I would absolutely go, especially given you're in California. Your governor is taking COVID 19 seriously; if they're allowed to be open, they have a plan to ensure safety.

I’ve had an entire root canal during this. Literally, had the root canal a day before the dentist shut down for all routine services and had to follow up with the crown, subsequent problems, and the works.
I would absolutely go. Putting off cleanings is what led to my root canal. My dentist went from a regular mask before all this to a whole damn shield, one patient in the entire office at a time. Tons Of sanitizer, tons of soap, extra precautions for everyone.
I felt VERY safe, way safer than Kroger!

For me, the determining factor would be where I live and what the local numbers look like.
In my area at this time the virus is not is not very prevalent, that could change at any time. I know my dentist very well and trust her to take all the precautions necessary. I had an appointment for the end of April and got a message they would be closed indefinitely. She will not reopen when she feels it’s safe. When she does reopen I will feel it is safe.
Now, going into a restaurant is whole other matter. It will be a while before I feel that is safe.

Ds is having issues with his braces and gums. He has been to 4 appointments in the last month.
If it was just routine care I would not go, but I did not have a choice for him. I trust his ortho. They have put incredible changes into place and I have asked For him to be the first patient of the day.

I had an abcess three weeks ago, and had to go in. At that time, it was my dentist, his assistant, and the receptionist They were only seeing patients on an emergency basis from 8-11 am M-Th. I had to go back a week and half later to have it checked, and it was the same protocol. I was asked if I was sick or in contact with covid19+ people, and the receptionist was spraying and disinfecting right behind me.
Today, I was there to have multiple xrays and to figure out a game plan for a root canal, and an implant. UGH. The office is now back open with multiple hygienists and two of the three dentists rotating, like they always do. Yesterday when I was called to confirm my appt, I was asked a series of 10(?) covid19/health questions. If I would have answered yes to any, they would have rescheduled. At the door, there was a paper with a big red stop sign on top that had the same 10 questions. If ok, proceed inside and stop immediately at the receptionist desk. There, I was to mark yes or no to the same 10 questions on a questionaire, got my temp taken, asked to use the hand sanitizer then take a seat in the chairs that were not marked closed. I noticed there are clear partitions by the receptionist and billing desks now. Otherwise, the dentists and their staff (from what I could see) had scrubs, gloves and paper face masks like they always do. I'm sure if they were performing a procedure like drilling, they'd be wearing a face shield, too.
Whew, sorry that was long! Just wanted you to know my experience here in a little town in Wisconsin. I drive 35 miles to see my dentist because he's great, I've had him for 25+ years, and he knows I'm an absolute baby about coming to see him. (and I'll be seeing him a lot in the next couple of months.) I felt very safe.

No I will not be going. They already rescheduled mine from April until May 28. I’ll be canceling. Nor will I be going to the doctors or hair dresser. After reading the Mother’s Day thread, I realized how foolish people are behaving. I can’t and won’t risk my health and life.

Wow. You guys have made me seriously rethink my appt next week. I am healthy, but live with my DD who is compromised. My teeth are fine; it's just a cleaning. I have no problems. I believe I had COVID-19 in January, after a trip to Europe.
Still, I think I will wait this one out.

We have had zero cases here and in the 4 counties around us. 3 cases in the city and 5 cases in the county surrounding it, all recovered. The dentist called for DD and myself for our check up and cleaning. I debating about going but decided to. It's at the end of May.

Unless it was an emergency or I were exceptionally prone to dental issues, I would postpone it.

I went to the orthodontist last week. I happened to have an appointment scheduled the day they reopened. I deliberated, but as there is no covid treatment in sight and our area is doing well, I went. I haven't left the house since March.
I had to fill out a waiver and health forms, have my temperature taken and use hand sanitizer before entering the office. They seated us apart in the waiting room and they were in full PPE, including face shields. All patients showed up in face coverings and were cooperative.
Has your dentist informed you of the precautions they are taking?

I'm scheduled to have a cleaning May 23 ish. I called to see if it is still on but haven;t hear back. I can wait. OTOH, ds17 has been 10 weeks since his last orthodontist appt and has one for June 1. That needs to happen.

After this madness started I was very anxious about going to my monthly infusion appointments but I have to. After going the first time, finding UW Madison hospital and clinics basically empty (at least that part) with safeguard after safeguard in place, I probably am safer now than I was before the pandemic. After passing the check-in, I've seen between 1 and 3 or so people walking all the way back to the last elevators and heading up to 3rd floor. Usually I probably see hundreds. No visitors or anyone accompanying people allowed and no unnecessary procedures happening.
That being said, if it was just a teeth cleaning/non-emergency I probably would still put it off. I only go because, again, I have to. But that's just me. If you are assured they are taking every precaution and feel the need go for it.

Think about it- what will change between now and June where you are? I am hoping that by June we will have had a steady decline in cases of the virus for a few weeks. But, our cases do seem to be declining a bit now.

It mentioned spacing in the waiting room and spacing of appointments. That was all. I am sure they are doing a lot more, but they didn't talk about it.

But, our cases do seem to be declining a bit now. I guess what I meant was what will change in terms of treatment for positive cases... but yeah, a steady decline in the number of reported cases would be a good indication. That all depends on where you live; here in AZ, we still have crap for overall testing numbers (when you consider the huge population), so I don't necessarily trust their numbers to know if they'e *truly* declining or not: you don't test anyone, your numbers can't go up. But that's just where I live, and my cynicism.

I did go, I had a cleaning yesterday. It was scheduled before all of this, and I wasn't sure if it would happen since our lockdown only ended this weekend (Denver Metro). We actually love our dentist and hygienist, so I felt comfortable that they would take it seriously. I had my mask, and a paper bag to store it while I had it off. The receptionist, who is also the Dentist's wife, sent a text when they were ready for me to come inside, took my temperature and asked the Covid questions at the door. The hygienist was double masked + face shield. She gave me a solution to swish around for 30 seconds. No Cavitron, only the metal tools. Because we have been going to them so long, and are friendly, it was kind of nice to see someone other than DH for a few minutes.

For a regular cleaning I would wait. For more in depth work like a root canal, abscess, etc. I would go and take all the precautions I could take. If you have any mouth spray with Zinc I would take that and ask the dentist to spray it in every so often throughout the procedure.
