An older lady a FB friend is looking for help getting rid of a groundhog. I called a friend who is an exterminator and here in NJ they are not even allowed to relocate them anymore. You have to call animal control, and apparently they won’t come bc they don’t want to disturb them. His recommendation, and what he does at his own house and for his parents, is to spray fox urine spray every night. Foxes are predators to groundhogs. He said it should take about a week for the groundhog to get the idea and it will find another home. Another thing you could try playing loud rock music by their hole, apparently it annoys them. But it will probably annoy your neighbors too. It’s good for other critters too. They also sell urine of wolf, bobcat, and mountain lion. They also sell on amazon with free shipping. thepeemart.com/product-category/predator-urine/fox-urine/

I have these solar ultrasonic repellants from Amazon that are really working well for me to keep the moles out of my yard. I have two in my backyard and one in the front. They emit a buzzing sound every 30 seconds or so, which can be annoying if you’re out around them too long, but you can turn them off for a time too. So far they are the best thing I’ve used to keep the critters out of my yard. ETA: it looks like they might not be good for groundhogs though, according to the questions/answers.

I have something in my basement that plugs into electricity, I assume it’s a similar function but it’s supposed to deter mice. I don’t know if it works. Ds saw a mouse and I couldn’t even set a trap without it snapping on me 🤦🏻♀️ I haven’t seen any mice since I started using them, but I didn’t see them before either. Soooo...

MMMmmm... pretty sure no one would like my method. The 3 S's of varmint control. Not practical for an urban area though.

I don't know about groundhogs, but years ago, we had a huge mole problem and we were told to treat for grubs because moles like to eat them. We treated for grubs and never had moles again.

We have a groundhog, probably many different, that has lived in our yard and others for several years. I live between a bike path and the interstate and there are 2 houses across the street. He has plenty of room and he doesn't seem to like tomatoes or peppers, the only veggies DH grows. We aren't bothered by him and our land is hilly and has woods and his tunnels seem to be in there. He does eat dropped blueberries but that seems to be all he bothers.

I thought the objective was to not have a skunk spray near you! 🤷🏻♀️

I hope the fox urine works for you.
It is reported to keep all sorts of critters away, but we never saw that it made a difference.

Also, how do they get fox urine? It is real, or synthetic? I can't imagine a fox just peeing in a bottle, lol.

Our neighbors in PA had them in their weed patch/falling down shed. My otherwise mild-mannered yellow lab killed and partially ate a few.

My neighbor unknowingly closed a bobcat in his garage last week. The thing trashed his two stall garage door by tearing off all of the rubber at the bottom as well as several inches of wood. It also peed all of his tires. Bam, he has bobcat pee.

Always has the answer! Collected through floor and cage drains in animal preserves. Go figure.

I'm sure it differs from state to state, but they are protected by normal game laws. In Iowa there are 'seasons' that allow hunting and trapping of fox.

My mother used a nice strong shovel.
Woodchucks/ groundhog/ hedgehogs eat whatever they want. They get HUGE and are aggressive. I don’t care what the professionals say, I grew up with them.
I just shooed them away. I was never really afraid of varmits.

I saw the ground moving from a mole so I stuck the hose down in there and it had to come up for air. When it did, I hit him with a bat! Trouble is, it was a plastic bat so I had to hit it several times. It screamed with every hit and so did I!

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought about Bill Murray trying to kill the gopher in Caddy Shack when they read this thread!

I lived in an area where small critters were a problem and we were told to get coyote urine. The problem was we had coyotes running through our yard and property already and I am sure there were "depositing" urine all over. It did not deter the small animals.
Get an outside dog that is a good hunter type dog and don't make a pet of him/her. My uncle raised horses and he had dogs that took care of the ground hogs. The ground hogs would dig holes that would break the horses legs if he did not do something about it. He had Afghan dogs that were also good to keep the coyotes and wolves away. These were not your pampered shampooed and shaved kind of dogs. They lived outside with their own shelter so they never came inside. The key is they were protecting their territory and did not have to be taught to go after the harmful critters. They had powerful shoulders and would head but their prey and did the job they were designed by nature to do.
