I posted part of this in the vent thread, but it needs its own post.
I put a train table on a Facebook group where you give stuff away on Wednesday. Train tables are large (4 feet by 3 feet) which I put in the description and please pick up by Thursday. The only person to respond said she'd pick it up Thursday by 4:00pm. Fine, sent my address. 4:00 no one shows up. At 6:30 and 8:30 she sent me messages asking if I would be able to help load it into her car. I wasn't checking messages anymore (crazy day) and figured she had changed her mind. I did answer this morning, if she wanted it come get it, I'm not loading it into her car for her, it won't fit in a car trunk, you would need a truck or van, but come get it by 8 pm. DH is pretty sure someone drove by our house looking at it on the porch a few minutes ago.
Then a message asking about the condition of the item, if it got wet last night (it's on my porch) and what's wrong with it. And finally a message with her address and "we only live 4 minutes away" please deliver the item to my house it won't fit in my car.
I deleted my post with the item in it, and moved it back to the garage. Giving something away should not be this difficult!

That is ridiculous and way out of line for her to ask you to deliver it! Sheesh...some people!

I hate people like that. You have every right to be annoyed.
We usually put things like that out at the end of driveway with a "Free" sign. It's usually picked up within a few hours.

Good lord, that is crazy. I wish I had a place to stick one since we live relatively close. I agree , just put it on the curb with a free sign. I bet it will disappear pretty quickly. Maybe post on ND that you are doing that and then ignore any messages you get.

Uggg, I'd like to give or sell things on FB because they are in good shaoe and not always things you can give to the thrift store and I don't want to garbage it but I just can't be bothered with crap like that.
It should be a 2 message deal. Is this still available? When can I pick it up, what's your address? Reply: yes it is, come anytime I'll leave it on the step at 123 street.

Last two times I moved I put stuff at the curb and almost every single thing was gone in a flash.
I did put a post on FB with a picture of everything at the curb. I listed as FIRST COME FIRST SERVE FREE AT CURB NO HOLDS. I had to ignore a few comments asking me to hold things, other than that it was perfect.

I’ve read suggestions before that if you’re offering it for free people think they’re doing YOU a favor; so they make entitled demands. But to try offering for $15 and people think they’re getting a deal.
Idk some people are entitled and suck.

The entitleds behavior is why I handle it like this:
1 post to our neighborhood FB page with the info including my address. It says "first come, no holds, no delivery, no messaging."
Put it at the end of the driveway with a FREE sign and I am done.
I do not respond to messages or to door knocks. It is free. If you want it, figure it out or not. I do not care. If it is still there 48 hours later (very rare) I throw it out.
I delete the post when the stuff is gone.

Thanks for it the reminder of why I don’t do this. I have posted some large items as a curb alert but yeah. Annoying. You post something and then people want more. Oh since you have this for free do you also have this for free.

Can you put it at the end of your driveway with a ‘free’ sign? I do that and things almost always get picked up over night. We also have a ‘buy nothing” Facebook page where people will claim things and it is super easy.

Yikes! My approach is to drop off at a Goodwill collection center or, if I have the minimally required donations, schedule a Habitat for Humanity pick-up. I don't bother with giveaways or yard/tag sales. If effective in your area, another option may be to leave an item on the curb next to the garbage/recycling bins on collection day.

We are moving across the country and I sold a ton of things on facebook. But man people tick me off. People claiming things and never showing. Or claiming them and then when its time to pick it up they now have 30 questions and aren't sure if they want it. I sold my old cricut and it told the lady it was in a rubber made container and to just leave the money in the plastic bag in the container. She took my brand new container I bought for moving! Then wouldn't respond when I asked for it back. We sold my sons dirt bike for super cheap. Probably too cheap since I had like 20 people want it immediately. I sold it to someone who said they would come get it right away. Even seeing I told the guy he could have it I had someone harass me for it asking for cheaper and wanting me to deliver it. Umm no. Or people on my local neighborhood site asking me to ship big items. People are crazy. Thankfully I did make $1000 selling off stuff. I also have had sort of friends (my kids classmates moms) claim things and not pay for them. Nice.

It's this type of thing that I think about whenever I'm getting rid of something and think that it might be worthwhile to try to get some money for it. It was hard at first, thinking about how much I could have recouped, but well worth it to not have to deal with these choosy beggars. Plus, I feel good about donating, so it works out well for me in the long run.

My husband put out our ping pong table with a $100 sign on it. Within 20 minutes, the guy who dates our neighbor came by and said he had $85 in his pocket if we'd take it. Yup. My husband offered to deliver it in his truck 9/10 of a mile away. Off they went. Best part was that we paid $80 for it about 10 years ago. We just seem to be lucky with getting rid of stuff. I never post anything online. Just a free or how much sign.
I wouldn't respond to texts or knocks at the door. If you want it, take it.

Sometimes, I’ve found that when things are being given away for free, people don’t have any incentive to show or show up on time. They have no skin in the game so why put in the effort?
But when it has a nominal price, there becomes a perceived value because there is a cost. people will jump through hoops for what they perceive to be getting the jump on a bargain. Go figure.

There is a subreddit to post this type of behavior called "Choosing Beggars". I read it only when I want to be annoyed. Sadly, you're not alone in dealing with this type of nonsense.

This reminds me of something my dad would do to get rid of big, bulky things that the trash truck would not take (back about 50 years ago...lol) He had one of those big TVs....the kind in a cabinet...big sucker. It did not work. He put it out near the alley behind our house with a sign on it that said "For Sale: $20.00" and then just waited for someone to steal it! lol...worked every time.

I'll have to check that place out. This same person I was dealing with managed to pick up a foosball table that was being gifted yesterday from the same "buy nothing" site, with a truck. Then they couldn't get it into their house for some reason. At least I know who not to deal with if I try to put anything else on there...

Habitat was scheduled for a pick up...the day after they temporarily closed - ugh. Hope your train table finds a good home soon!

About 4 years ago I was selling a train table on Craigslist for $20. The lady came in the evening but couldn’t fit it in her car and texted me from my porch asking if I had tools to take it apart. Normally I probably would have been annoyed, but she was super sweet and had 2 young kids ages 3 and 1 and her husband was out of town. I ended up offering to drop it off at her apartment the next day, since I have an SUV. We ended up chatting for awhile and had some things in common, including a young child. We became friends after that and got together a few times before they moved out of state. The difference in our stories, is that she wasn’t expecting me to deliver it, nor did she ask me to. She was very nice and grateful. That is the only time I have ever offered to deliver anything I was selling. 😉
Sometimes it’s just too much work to give things away for free on Craigslist or FB Marketplace. People can be rude and disrespectful of your time. Luckily, I usually get nice people though.😊

I always recommend this to people who want to get rid of things quickly!🤪 People will steal something with a price on it, faster than they will grab something that is free. Sad but true!🥴

I recently purchased an entertainment center on Facebook marketplace. The seller put a brief description, price and this: Yes, it is still available. No it is not free. No I will not deliver. Yes you need a truck or SUV.
I really laughed when I that. I wonder how many people still asked him anyway.

I’ll also take a pic of the item, post to fb sites with “Curb alert - FREE- pick up on xxxx road between xxxx and xxx roads. Will delete post when it’s gone” Then I don’t have to give anyone my actual address, and only serious people come by. I don’t reply to comments and I delete it when it’s gone so 500 people can’t reach out to me after the fact asking “still available?”

Then wouldn't respond when I asked for it back. My porch isn't covered so I keep a Rubbermaid bin there specifically for stuff that is being picked up. Most people seem to understand the purpose, but I did have a lady take the bin once. She was a total moron, but she did bring it back a few days later.
