Off the topic but farmers aren't getting much of that. I think cattle are selling for around $1 per pound on the hoof right now. I honestly don't know who's making all the $$ on meat. That is a shame. I didn't know that. I buy my hamburger at a locally owned store where the farmer's are selling direct to. I really hope they are not getting less than what they should be earning. Not trying to sound stuck-up about buying hamburger. I buy locally owned because of my food sensitivities. I have to pay a lot for meat when I do buy it. Even if the farmer is selling the meat, it has to be processed first. I doubt any are allowed to do their own processing unless they have a usda inspected facility and an inspector on hand. We have friends who sell their meat at farmer's markets but it goes through the local processor first. I'm sure they all factor the cost of processing in. You don't sound stuck up. I don't know what we would do if we couldn't raise our own beef and pork. Probably buy from a fellow farmer. eta: just reread. The store is most likely making the bulk of the profit in your case. It could be that the store is also picking up the price of processing (farmer takes the animal to the processor, the store picks it up and pays the processor).
