My most wonderful BIL has been fighting Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a form of blood cancer for well over a year. He is finally going to receive a bone marrow transplant. He goes into the hospital at 6:00am tomorrow. He will receive high doses of chemo for 5 days and then on the 26th, receive the actual transplant. Any prayers and positive thoughts are greatly appreciated for this man. He is the most easy going, hard worker, generous person I've seen and I so much want him to come through this with great success. Thank you!
freecharlie My sister wanted me to thank you for the suggestion of the Staybridge Suites. It is a lovely place and only 4 miles from St. Lukes. They we given a room at only $79 a day! Which insurance will pay 75%. So a huge THANK YOU!
Update 5.27.2020 BiL had his transplant today. Had a few really rough days prior while going through the large doses of chemo, but yesterday was better and today he received his cells. Said he was feeling pretty good, but tired. Now it is wait and see how this goes. They say you get to feeling 1% better each day, so it will take him close to 4 months to start feeling normal again. Said it actually could take up to a year to be 99.8%. I'm not 100% sure where in the timeline they determine if things are going to be okay. I'm sure rejection can occur at any time as with other transplants, but for today, he is good! Thank you all for your prayers and support!!!!
Update 06.03.2020 BiL is struggling a bit, going through the rough part of this process, but hospital staff all say it is normal. The meds have made blisters and sores in his mouth so bad they are bleeding and he can't eat, so they are putting in a feeding tube to keep nourishment going. It is 7 days out from the actual transplant, and they say day 14 should show huge improvement, so we are still crossing fingers that he reaches this point soon as its been heck so far. Thanks for any and all your thoughts and prayers.
Update 06.18.2020 Went to Denver yesterday to help my sister take things they will need to live in the nearby hotel for the next 2 months while BIL continues to recover. They were going to maybe release him by week's end, but they called and said to come get him, they were going to release him. Went and got him and all his baggage. 19 meds he will be taking for awhile. He is doing so much better, but still very weak, has a difficult time keeping food down, but he is out of the hospital! Since he has no immune system, he will be on IV antibiotics for awhile and they will be coming today to teach my sister how to do that. Sister said he seems a bit depressed today and figured that was very normal. Hard to be so sick for such a long time and not have some depressed emotions. Continued prayers are appreciated.
Update 7/31/2020
Thank you for your prayers for my BIL! He is coming home today. All his blood work is looking good. Now for him to stay healthy while he continues to heal and get stronger. He will travel to Denver 1-2 times a week (90 miles from home) for them to continue to monitor him, but I know being home will be so much better for him. Always better to be in your familiar surroundings.
It is amazing what they can do these days. So thankful for the BMT team he had and their knowledge to get my BIL through this.
Again, thank you from the bottom of me and my family's hearts for your prayers.

Best wishes for your BIL!! We have a friend who went through a very similar procedure last fall (not sure which kind of blood cancer it was for) and is doing amazingly well. The 5 days of chemo before the transplant were the hardest for our friend so some encouraging messages might be nice to send to your BIL.

Prayers and "GROW CELLS GROW" They tested his siblings, 3 brothers, but 1 has something so they wouldn't take him to begin with and 1 sister and none matched. All they know is this person is suppose to be an excellent match and they are from Canada. Glad your cousin is still doing well! They really have come a long ways in this area of treatment. My brother had a kidney transplant in the late 80s and he passed in 2015, but it wasn't from kidney failure, but overall complications from diabetes. Awesome stuff.

I am sorry to read your update. Its funny you mention the '14 days' thing because a lady that I follow on Insta's step-father had a bone marrow transplant in mid May and I recall her saying the same thing. Thankfully, her step dad did make the corner and things start to look better at day 12 or so. I am hoping and praying for the same thing for your BIL.

Very soon they will start a test his cells to see if he has “engrafted” the new ones. My cousin received a bone marrow transplant for leukemia and it does take a while. He can also ask for these little sponges on a stick that he can put in his mouth that will help with the sores. My cousin liked those and chocolate milkshakes because it seem to dull the pain. But they will know probably within the next couple of weeks if he’s making new cells
