It never occurred to me to cut a bagel any other way than in half through the middle. This Twitter thread is pretty funny. How not to cut a bagel

Lol!!
There have been times, when the bagel wasn’t precut, that I have torn it apart by breaking it in half and then into pieces.

We are serious bagel people. We actually have a bagel cutter - looks like a guillotine.

I think this is one of the best Twitter feeds ever. Now I want a New York bagel. BTW slicing like this IS an abomination.

We have a bagel slicer, but that only works on bagels that aren't too soft. Fresh bagels still need to be cut by hand with a knife.

We are serious bagel people. We actually have a bagel cutter - looks like a guillotine. We had one of those when I was growing up. The real tragedy was that I grew up in Arkansas, where real bagels were like unicorns. It was all Lender's in the freezer section, which now that I think about it, was pretty revolutionary for my goyische area in the 1960s-70s.

And now I want a sesame bagel with a big honkin' schmear of cream cheese.

If I have a bagel that I don’t want to share, I break it into chunks and spread cream cheese on the chunks. My husband knows not to ask for a chunk.

Just, NOOOOO to the vertical slices. I will also add that bagels are not sweet. If it is French toast, or some other sweet/fruit, flavored, it is a “round bread product”, but it isn’t a bagel. Many will disagree, but that is my family’s truth.

In half with a knife. Though I do prefer to eat it like a sandwich with the cream cheese in the middle, rather than eating it open faced. Unless I have lox, onion and tomato, that is.

My in-laws slice them across, but in thirds instead of in half, and it is ... weird.

Bagel cutter. The replies and comments to that tweet were hilarious.
Also -- (from what I understand) there's a US-coastal divide on whether bagels should be toasted or not? I'm firmly in Camp Toasted (Oregonian here).

I work at Panera and normally we just send them through the electric bagel slicer (except the onion one). I did have a customer recently ask me to cut her bagel with the bread slicer though. She then said, "is it clean?" I said yes so then she said she didn't want to make it dirty by me slicing her bagel so I just sliced it with the bagel slicer. I thought that was odd.

I’ll bet she was trying to be nice. She’s probably had to clean a bread slicer before and didn’t want to do that to you.

I had to laugh at the KitKat with a bite out. I've never seen one sliced that way. Not even at all the meetings that I used to have to go where 3 bagels were supposed to satisfy 40 people.

I was in St. Louis last year at a large meeting and they sliced their bagels like bread. It was actually much better because the ratio of cream cheese to bagel was so much better (with a non toasted bagel). I fully approve.

We are serious bagel people. We actually have a bagel cutter - looks like a guillotine. My mother had a bagel cutter. I could never use it properly. I use a bread knife and slice it in half, horizontally.

I would sell my husband for New York bagel and a pizza. ( a real pizza , not pudgies, or any other chain).
I did spend way too much money at Einstein ‘s bagels. In Pittsburgh. They are good but not New York.

@megmc No need to sell your husband - Ess-a-Bagel ships nationwide. A bit pricey, admittedly, since you need to order a lot, but if you need your NYC bagel fix I highly recommend them. They're bagels, they'll freeze well. My office is a few blocks from one of their locations and I can't tell you how much I miss them. Their site says that if you sign up for their emails you'll get $10 off of your first order, too, though I'm not sure if that's for the nationwide shipping or for local orders. Not that I'm trying to enable anything....

We use our meat slicer for bagel slicing. It works so well! It’s been living on our counter since stupid Covid started. It’s used all the time now to slice home made sourdough.
