Thank you for sharing this. I could not bring myself to watch the video (and I acknowledge that privilege), so I did not hear George Floyd call out for his mama, hear him utter that word that for most of us is muscle memory when we are in pain, afraid, desperate for help. This made me weep.
It also helped me think about what it looks like for white women, white mamas to "come running."
Again, thanks for the share.

I believe you voted for and attended 45’s inauguration. My guess is this years election might be a great place to start.

I didn’t watch the video but will own going down a rabbit hole trying to find a photo of him pictured with his mother. It’s my hope that the fear and humiliation left him when he saw her again. 7-8 mins is a long time to be under somebodies knee.

Can someone explain what the link is? I don't need (or want) to watch or listen to audio or video of his death to know everything about George Floyd’s death was the worst of the worst. And that’s what I’m concerned that this link is. Thank you.

I only watched a few seconds of the video when a clip appeared on the news. It was the moment he called out for this mama. I sobbed. I fully understand why you choose not to watch and I truly hope you are right about seeing her again.

And that’s what I’m concerned that this link is. Thank you. It’s an opinion piece from a black Mother’s perspective. I would never share the video or audio showing the death of anyone black or white. I don’t think there is any dignity in it.

It's outrageous, and it's not a one off. It's not new that this is happening, but now it's being captured on film over and over for the world to see. No more excuses or denials.
There is a real problem with people in power and how they treat those who are not. I saw it happen with my white teenage son by a white policeman who was sadistic and ignorant. That's WITH his so-called white privilege, and as a mother I felt helpless. I cannot imagine facing that all. the. time. because of race.
I know there are heartless bastards in all walks of life, but three other policemen saw and did nothing. That tells me this happens too frequently and either no one is willing to stand up to the bully or they all think it's just fine. Either way, there has to be a big change in this country.

Kinda sad when someone wants to see the world change and be a better place for everyone, and just gets shut down.

Kinda sad when someone wants to see the world change and be a better place for everyone, and just gets shut down. Equally sad to see that you saw it as someone shutting you down instead of someone telling you how you can really work to make the world better.

It was something along the lines of not knowing where to start and finding it hard to believe black men have to be taught to be subservient and meek.

Kinda sad when someone wants to see the world change and be a better place for everyone, and just gets shut down. Olan didn’t shut you down at all. She suggested you vote for someone other than Trump in the next election. That is a very positive and necessary suggestion. If you continue to support Trump, you are part of this problem.

I can still remember the moment my friend explained to me how afraid she was for her son’s life. How little I knew about the life of POC. It had never occurred to me that my sons’s lives would possibly be in danger from the very people trusted to protect them. I remember the shock and disgust I felt that a mother would have to teach their children how to placate the police and others in positions of power to possibly save their lives. It was a life changing moment for me. I read a piece about this latest murder by cop where the author explained how well George Floyd had learned the lessons he was taught because even as he was being murdered and begging for his life he continued to call his murderer “sir” to attempt to appease him. How fucking sad is that?

I worry about my 24 year old son. I can’t imagine the level of fear that a Black mother must live with. Thank you for sharing this, Olan.

I have been posting on my facebook even though I generally try to just post fluff. I need the Trump people who see my posts to know exactly where I stand and that I am standing.
I know I can't do enough. But I am going to do what I can with the voice I have.
"George Floyd called for his deceased mother as his life was being snuffed out. Mothers, imagine your sons calling for you as they are being murdered. If it doesn't break your heart and scare the hell out of you imagining it then you are heartless. And I'll be damned if I teach my sons to call a murdering person in so called "authority, " "Sir," like Floyd did the entire time he was on the ground until he was dead. I hope the murderer is currently calling for his mother as well. #retribution"

I hope this fits and is interesting to some here. This article by Dr. Jan Willis was published today; she's a WOC, a Buddhist, and professor and she marched with Dr. King. I love her writing. The article is We Cry Out for Justice. And I love the image that was included in the article (I can't work out how to paste it; it's right at the top of the article if you are interested.)

Kinda sad when someone wants to see the world change and be a better place for everyone, and just gets shut down. I would imagine that Colin Kaepernick and everyone else who took a knee to see the world change and be a better place felt the same way...

There is no way I could let this happen, even it if meant loosing my job or even my life. I could never, ever live with myself if I stood by and let this happen.
