Happy pride month!
I’ve been thinking lately about the book And the Band Played On by Randy Shilts. Maybe you all have read it already or maybe it was before your time. If you haven’t read it, you might like to. It’s about the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Randy Shilts was a gay journalist who landed in San Francisco right at the start of AIDS; he was tough and abrasive and opinionated, and he ruffled lots of feathers around here. Eventually he too died of AIDS.
If you haven’t read the book, you should give it a try. Added bonus: a much younger Dr. Anthony Fauci is heavily featured in the book. Randy Shilts did NOT care for him!
It was a great read, and very enlightening for a young (back then) innocent like me.

This isn’t a current photo of the White House, just so Peas are aware. It is from 2015.

Happy Pride to You all. My mom was a teacher at the Vallejo Adult School and we would go to SF to see a play. It was a big deal, we would dress, have lunch, and then go to the play. One year, we were there the same time as the Gay Pride Parade and when we were walking to the theater we happened upon it. I was a shy, highly embarrassed young teen. My mom wanted to watch the parade for a bit, we had time, and she had a student that was in it and she wanted to see if she could see him. All of a sudden one of the guys in the parade comes running out, screaming my mom's name "Ms. Kay, Ms. Kay" and giving her a big hug and my mom just grinning ear to ear. This was probably in the late 70's and looking back, I am so proud of my mom for just loving and caring for her students. I hope everyone has people in your life that love and support you.

If it was 1979, I was there, too. DH (then fiancé) and I went to the city to have brunch at the Palace Hotel and also happened upon it. It was an eye-opener.

I was at Pride in San Francisco in 1981. It was very interesting. I hope we have come a long way since then.

This book was recommended to me in the past and I had forgotten all about it. Thank you for the reminder. I'm ordering it today. Happy pride month to all from this ally!
