dual national (Uk-US) as are my kids (but not my DH)
It's certainly on my mind to move back to the UK but the practicalities are a bit daunting

We are American but my husbands company has an office in Ireland. If trump continues to occupy the White House we are moving. I won’t even bother to sell my house, I will just walk away which is not something I take lightly but I fear if he stays in office our days of free movement will be over quickly. We have our passports and go bags set and his boss has all the paperwork ready to go and waiting for us to pull the trigger. Wow! You're further ahead than I am. I'm glad it sounds like you and your DH are on the same page about this. And having a supportive boss is awesome. Wouldn't he/she want to leave too? I share your concern that following the election, and I don't know if the $hit would really hit the fan in Nov. or January, our assets could be frozen and things could get locked down pretty quickly. Feels like a banana republic in the making. Four years ago I never could have imagined thinking this way. We started making plans in Nov 2016 to leave but we were trying to get most of the kids through HS. I have 2 in college but they are willing to finish school anywhere and DD starts HS in the fall. She’s so sick of this country she’s willing to leave even though our HS is amazing. DH’s boss is from Israel and rich as sin so he can leave whenever, I don’t think he will but who knows. He could realistically pick up the entire company and move to any country so it would be up the the employees if they want to leave. And most everyone works from home unless they live in DC but with Covid we have proven everyone can work remotely. I think if trump loses in Nov he will bail and throw in the towel because then NY will fast track charges. I suspect if he sticks around at all, it will be to play golf but I really think he will be on the first plane to Slovakia or where ever the hell Melania is from, he’s gonna run and hide. If McConnell loses too that’s the crap that will get scary. He’s going to destroy as much as he can on the way out the door. There will be zero transfer of power, thankfully Biden has been here before so he at least has an idea of how things go. If trump wins and the Dems take over the senate, he’s out. They will find a way to impeach him. Or his hands will be tied and will become the lamest duck president in history. Now if he wins and the republicans keep the senate, we are screwed. I honestly believe if nothing changes, we will never have another election again.

My dad’s mother’s family owned (s) a town there. We used to go check on it, but by now it belong to the government by now. I think they never claim it because of taxes. I think it would be interesting to find the place and stay for awhile. Owned a town? I've never heard of that except in the Canadian comedy, Schitts Creek. Cool. Or Trailer Park Boys
Insofar as Trump winning a second term, I'm afraid my head might explode but not for my physical safety. I live in Los Angeles where the 101 & 405 meet. When the demonstrations came to our area there was an outcry because a lot of the stores are mom and pop stores. The community helped clean up and money was raised for a car that was burned.
If you would be bummed out living in the U.S. you should move. But as some posters have stated, it isn't all rainbows and ponies in Canada.

Let’s just say I’m thrilled ro be 2 hrs away from the border and have an “escape plan”. I love where I am now. I can’t imagine leaving. But if push comes to shove then we’re mentally prepared to go. And what would you say to the CBSA when you attempt to cross into Canada? There is a process for immigration to Canada, very similar to the rules that Canadians would need to follow if they wish to immigrate to the USA. Please check gov.ca to see the requirements. No. i have dual citizenship. I would just be crossing to Canada to fly back to my home country. But this is a worst case scenario. I can’t imagine leaving. This is my home now.

My sister is Cnd living in the US. She isn’t considering moving back. Her husband ha his job and her kids are in school.
I’m in BC and my dad always says we’re lucky it rains a lot or else everyone would want to live here. It’s already hard enough to buy property.
We won’t be all roses. We will be paying for this covid pandemic for the rest of our lives and our kids will be paying for it 😩 for their lifetime. It seems we’re losing a federal party too. Politics are bad everywhere. The US just has it very bad at the moment. I feel bad for what your country has been through and is continuing to go through.
ETA - did anyone see my post about our provincial health minister! She was written up in the NY Times. All of my friends freaked thinking that everyone is going to want to move here now during covid to be under her leadership.

I did notice the article in the NY Times. Our son lives in Revelstoke and LOVES it. He's a mountain man through and through. We got to visit last June... it's spectacularly gorgeous. I am horribly allergic to pine and the pine pollen made me very sick for 3 weeks afterwards. If we do end up in B.C. at some point, I'd def. want to be in a city with a good hospital, especially as we get older.

Heck, I am American and I am thinking of emigrating to Canada. If the winters in Ottawa were not so brutal, I'd be packing my household up now. I'm Canadian and wouldn't live in Ottawa either ! Why not British Columbia? We have some pretty mild winters here. And it is beautiful here. Hopefully though Trump will be put out of office and your country can heal. I am a Canadian, living in Ottawa for the past 35 years. The winters are definitely brutal here. DH and I are thinking about retiring to southern Ontario when the time comes. He grew up in Niagara Falls so somewhere around there might be nice.

I could. But it hasn’t reached a point where I’d seriously consider it yet. I don’t think my husband would much as he loves Australia. He’d see it as abandoning his country, and we should stay and fight, if we want change. I’m not sure I disagree with that.
I might reconsider if he wins a second term.

I have not heard of trailer park boys, but if the place we used to go was the town, a trailer park would have been a step up. Rural Canada wasn’t pretty in the early seventies.

Several of my DD’s friends are here from other countries and seeking to ( legally ) keep or transfer their visas from student visas to green cards or whatever it is to stay here legally. And a few of her friends are wavering right now about even bothering. Is it worth the effort, is it worth the expense.
And in talking to DD about the unlabeled unidentified force in DC this week and what people from other countries are saying about that, and how they are comparing the US to collapsed or fascist regimes because we have nearly all of the signs. I said maybe X & Y are right about going home now. I wonder how many people in other places looked back and said I should have left when...
These are people who until 10 days ago were actively seeking to legally stay here. People who like it here and have lives here. Despite Trump, despite the pandemic & our poor response to it, they were actively seeking to stay here. And now after seeing the most recent shit show they are wavering. I can’t blame them.
I don’t have any place else to go so I’m stuck.
Decide where your critical line is and have a plan in place to go when your critical line is crossed.

My parents were both born in Canada. After they married, they decided to travel to the US on their honeymoon and tie in a visit to Dad’s brother, who had moved to California a few years before. They loved it. Of course, California back when they travelled here was a very different state. When they returned to Canada, they started talking about the possibility of moving to the states like my uncle did. They eventually made the decision to move after a particularly harsh winter. Mom was newly pregnant with my older sister and they had no jobs waiting for them and not a lot of money saved up either. They moved in with my uncle until Dad found a job and they could afford their own apartment. They never moved back to Canada.
And for some reason, they did not maintain dual citizenship. Dad’s sister made the move a couple of years after my parents did, and Dad’s parents a few years after that. This left Dad’s other 6 brothers living in Canada. None of Mom’s family chose to move here. I so wish they had maintained their Canadian citizenship, if that was an option, and done whatever was necessary to register us kids for both countries as well. We went to Canada every year to visit, but I sure with I had the option to live there.
At this point in my life, yeah, I would definitely look into moving there. I have cousins in just about every providence to help educate me so I could decide where to move to. And now, the only original family that still lives in California is my two sisters and their children and I don’t see any of them since Mom died. All the rest of the family remained in Canada. The one uncle that first moved here had one son, born in California. When the son grew up, he and his wife moved to Canada, just the opposite of what his parents had done.
So yeah, I would absolutely consider moving to Canada. I loved every single visit we took to the various provinces throughout my childhood.

Just for fun I went and googled "people who said they would leave if Trump was elected in 2016". Quite a few said they would and I can't find anyone that actually did.
Be interesting if anyone does in 2020 (i know, i know this thread is about Canadians living abroad but i went down the bunny trail since the election was brought up)

I live in California. As long as we have a democratic governor I feel like we are safe. I saw hate in another post about Newsom, but I actually like him and think he's doing a great job. If he ran for president I'd vote for him. I also really liked Jerry Brown.

I've moved across the country twice in the last 8 years but I'm not leaving my country ever. There is a possibility we could move to Germany but I'm not interested. For one thing, I don't want to be cold ever again. For another, things can't stay bad forever. The entire world has had its ups and downs all through history and I'm not going to live the rest of my life expecting doom and gloom forever. That is where we are with it. Politics come and go. We are not moving when he may or may not be re elected and even that would only be 4 years. We can ride it out.

The consensus was he would have to eat children and even then we would probably just keep our kids away from him.

Well it's not likely to get better if we all run off. Not everyone has the luxury of just running away when things get tough. I think about all those people and wonder what it must have felt like during the Civil War. Like, will things ever get better? Slowly slowly slowly we have. We need to do better but how does that happen if we turn and leave?
Anyway if I was going to move to a neighboring country I think I'd prefer Mexico, drug lords aside, because of the weather and the culture and the food and the over-the-top Catholic kitsch that I love so much. Maybe my infantile Spanish would improve. Fiesta!

I have dual citizenship and am seriously considering leaving if he is re-elected. I don't see how that can happen unless cheating is involved or something catastrophic happens with Biden. Unfortunately, my son is still in college and I need to stay in the US until he's at least in his 4th year. But I have plans to leave if necessary.

And for some reason, they did not maintain dual citizenship. From 1947 and 1977 you automatically lost your Canadian citizenship if you acquired citizenship in another country. A friend fell into this category and all her children born after the rule changes have dual US/CDN citizenship.

I'm 99% sure that if Trump wins another term we will move out of the US next summer. Dh's company has offices all over the world and in theory, it shouldn't be too hard to transfer. California is home, both sets of grandparents are here, we were both born and raised here.

Can't even compare Canadian politics/politicians to what Trump is doing. What is happening in the USA authoritarianism on the rise. Dr Henry is the provincial health officer... Adrian Dix is the Health Minister. She's awesome, a non partisan, unelected bureaucrat. Basically the BC equivalent to Dr. Fauci; the only difference being the Premier & the Minister of Health actually follow her instructions.
