... moving back to Canada? It's and understatement to say that I'm deeply concerned about what will happen come Nov-January. 4 years ago I never could have predicted the lows we've experienced as a nation under the current administration.
DH and I love our lives here. We don't want to leave. But we have the option of doing so due to our citizenship. One of our children lives in B.C., one in the SF Bay area. We live in a beautiful part of California. Is it dumb not to consider selling our house and leaving?
DH and I disagree on the severity of possible turmoil heading our way here in the USA. I'd love to hear what you and / or you and your partner are thinking if you're in this position.
And if you're American, would you leave if you had the chance, turn your back on your community and all you love here?
Edited to add: DH is still working at a career that he loves and excels at and it would be next to impossible to get him to leave it.

No it’s certainly not dumb to consider it. I’m English and I cannot imagine living under Trump when you have the option to live in beautiful BC.

Heck, I am American and I am thinking of emigrating to Canada. If the winters in Ottawa were not so brutal, I'd be packing my household up now.

I don't think it is dumb, but I do think anything the asshole-in-chief does will affect the entire world.

I am an American and I have seriously considered leaving. It’s not as easy as just picking up and going for me, but if it were, I’d be long gone. If he wins re-election... for real. FOR REAL. I can’t do four more years of this.

I am a re-pat like you would be. I am so glad I came home. What was I thinking? My home is on an island and I can’t imagine leaving but I will if the kids don’t move back here I will move to Vancouver. I hate thinking about it but my love for my family is stronger.

I told my husband I went through all the hassle to become a US citizen that I wouldn't entertain the thought of moving back. He's asked me a few times over the years. One of things I realized though is how fast 4 years has gone by and despite all the turmoil I still feel pretty secure over all.

If I was retired, and don't HAVE to stay here, I would absolutely consider it. VERY STRONGLY consider it. I live in CA also and between the governor here and trump, I don't know why ANYONE is still in CA unless their job requires it. I have 14-19 more year and then we're going to blow this joint. As a teacher, I am kinda stuck unless I take a big pay cut and lose some of my retirement.

Well, I'm a Canadian living in Canada and I think about moving every.single.day. I'm in Alberta, so we are living with a provincial government that literally makes me go "what the fuck have they done now?!" at least once a day. I'm not sure I can cope for another three years. DH and I are talking about buying a house in the Okanagan or moving back 'home' to Saskatchewan--just have to get my youngest through his last year of high school (assuming it's not all online!) and then we can go anywhere. I'm sad because I love my house and friends in our city, but the wider community and province are making me despair for the future--they elected these people and every day someone else is spouting off misogynistic, racist, homophobic, and just plain stupid rhetoric. I'm tired of feeling sad, hopeless and powerless every day--I'd love to be able to watch the local news without my blood pressure rocketing for just a full week. So I totally get why you'd want to leave where you are--and as long as you avoid Alberta and Ontario, you should be good!

Why not British Columbia? We have some pretty mild winters here. And it is beautiful here. Hopefully though Trump will be put out of office and your country can heal.

So I totally get why you'd want to leave where you are--and as long as you avoid Alberta and Ontario, you should be good! hugs to you! It sucks to hate important aspects of where you live... DH and I were born and raised in ON and lived there till we were 28yo. My mom, sister, DH's siblings all live there, in our home town. a good sized city. We've spent the last 31 years here in California. One kid born in CA (Canada) and one in CA (Calif.). LOVE our lives here, would hate to leave our friends, community, DH's job. But I'm alarmed at the authoritarianism we're seeing and have seen for the past 3.5 years. I fear things are going to get really ugly come the election. I don't think it will be fair, for one thing, and I don't think he'll leave office even if he loses in a landslide. And after that? Who the eff knows??? Should we get as much of our assets out now, while we can? (I know that sounds kinda nuts, but this really feels like pre WWII Germany to me.)

Take the nice big California retirement and use it somewhere where we can live cheaper.

It wasn't vacation.

We are American but my husbands company has an office in Ireland. If trump continues to occupy the White House we are moving. I won’t even bother to sell my house, I will just walk away which is not something I take lightly but I fear if he stays in office our days of free movement will be over quickly. We have our passports and go bags set and his boss has all the paperwork ready to go and waiting for us to pull the trigger.

I'm glad it sounds like you and your DH are on the same page about this. And having a supportive boss is awesome. Wouldn't he/she want to leave too? I share your concern that following the election, and I don't know if the $hit would really hit the fan in Nov. or January, our assets could be frozen and things could get locked down pretty quickly. Feels like a banana republic in the making. Four years ago I never could have imagined thinking this way.

We don’t get much winter nor summer heat. The Okanagan is amazing for living as is the coast. I would live in Kelowna but my family is all here.

We joke with my dad weekly about making room in his senior apartment for us, but the reality is I'm concerned but not running anywhere. My belief is everything is going to collapse around this Administration in one smelly, giant heap. As the polls are turning against him and he can't get out to spew in front of his fans at rallies or have the blow out convention he wants and more and more mainstream Republicans come out against him, I am concerned about what he will do. Because he will never, ever, ever want to be labeled as a "loser" as he faces that reality I will not be surprised to have a medical episode cause him to step aside. Then the loss can be blamed on Pence. I'll stay here fighting hard for the America I want.

Not Canadian, but I hope it's ok to chime in. I seriously considered Sevilla, Spain after the last election. My most peaceful times during the last few years have been when I've left the country and unplugged from home. Once out of the US, the relief I've felt has been palpable. But, going completely on my own is a very daunting thought. KWIM?

My dad’s mother’s family owned (s) a town there. We used to go check on it, but by now it belong to the government by now. I think they never claim it because of taxes. I think it would be interesting to find the place and stay for awhile.

My husband and I have been seriously talking about going north to Canada. It will depend on the election. I feel very fortunate to have lived in California my entire life. It is like a different country out here. Don't know if I have the energy for that type of move but I certainly have been thinking about it. I am also very concerned, not panicked, about the safety of my savings in US banks. I always try to trust my gut and so far in my life I have made good choices. My guts says get off before the boat sinks. If trump is defeated I will breathe a lot easier.

Let’s just say I’m thrilled ro be 2 hrs away from the border and have an “escape plan”. I love where I am now. I can’t imagine leaving. But if push comes to shove then we’re mentally prepared to go.

I've moved across the country twice in the last 8 years but I'm not leaving my country ever. There is a possibility we could move to Germany but I'm not interested.
For one thing, I don't want to be cold ever again. For another, things can't stay bad forever. The entire world has had its ups and downs all through history and I'm not going to live the rest of my life expecting doom and gloom forever.

Well if the family still owned it, I would invite you all there. Actually I didn’t believe it until my dad’s aunt received an inheritance from somebody in Canada! She was supposed to give half to my da but she kept it.

And what would you say to the CBSA when you attempt to cross into Canada? There is a process for immigration to Canada, very similar to the rules that Canadians would need to follow if they wish to immigrate to the USA. Please check gov.ca to see the requirements.
