They are defending the indefensible. The issue is that Erin Condren taught her kids that rules do not apply to them and that lying to the police is ok (hula hoops quote). The people defending them on insta sound cray cray. Had to take a step back and stop posting.

christine58 I understand that what she said she understood white privilege to mean is not correct. I hope that she is learning from that. But people have turned her comment about treating people with kindness into her trying to ignore the fact that she could do more research about white privilege, when in reality she was referring to the situation with her coworker and how the coworker treated her. Her version of how the co-worker treated her. Her version. We don't have any idea what actually transpired. And if she is viewing that interaction through the lens of her white privilege, there may simply be more to the story. She acknowledges she won't complain herself. She assumes or has the perception that nothing will be done because she believes her manager is afraid to address something with an employee who is a POC. She uses an awful lot of loaded words and phrases to describe the interaction. Now, perhaps things happened exactly as described. But we don't know that.

What did HR say about it? HR wasn't told because my GM is too scared to report it. She doesn't even want her Area Manager to know (probably because she should've been on the floor rather than in the office when the incident occurred). You need to report it to HR, not your boss. It happened to you, not your boss.

Racism is a public health emergency. Covid is a public health emergency. Since protests and marches have started, there are a lot of people watching Minnesota and other states where people are marching for black lives matter. From what I’ve seen, and I’m in Phoenix where we opened up the city too early and Covid is exponentially rising and filling hospital beds and ICUs. We’ve had BLM marches downtown for a couple of weeks and haven’t seen a substantial increase in Covid patients due to March gatherings. Many of the marchers wear masks and try to social distance when marching.
The data I have seen shows that the protesters and marchers are not adding Covid cases and are not being hospitalized. They are maintaining social distancing and wearing masks.
That’s different from a no or minimal mask wearing group hugging and taking group selfies on the beach.
One seems like risking one public health emergency and minimizing risk with distance and mask to combat another public health emergency. The other seems like taking advantage of people who are speaking out about racism and saying graduation is just as important while neglecting to minimize the Covid risk.
My two cents. It’s not hypocrisy. It’s more like stealing the momentum an energy of a movement against racism and using it for a fun party. The graduation stunt is more comparable to having a wedding or a bridal shower at a plantation house. Totally misses the historical significance and blows off the people who are marching for their rights and their families‘ safety.

Well- the people I know in AZ certainly aren’t protesting but they are posting everywhere about: - the made up virus and that the blue states have it because “they deserve it” - it is hot there so the heat will kill it. - my daughter and her friends are teenagers - try telling a teenager they can’t see their friends I can’t imagine why it is spreading like wildfire there (sarcasm). And yes, those people are now blocked on Facebook because I can’t deal with it anymore.

Then what explanation would you give for over 3,000 new cases today in Arizona?? Arizona opened almost everything up abruptly on May 15th while cases were still rising. Since then, we’ve seen a steady increase in cases, up to current critical levels. On Thursday (two days ago), our governor held a press conference to tell us how things were worsening, said we “should” wear masks and socially distance, and said that local leaders can now decide if they want to mandate mask wearing in public. Since then, many cities and Maricopa County (where Phoenix is located and I saw somewhere it’s the fourth largest county in the US) have mandated mask wearing in public spaces. We were seeing an increase in cases before the protests downtown. Other states that were improving continue to improve even with protesting occurring in large cities. The Arizona Covid situation is not looking good, but it seems like we would’ve been on this trajectory whether or not there were marches.

So she’s taking a leave of absence? I wonder if she’ll be “taking” a salary with that leave of absence?

My aunt-in-law died of covid a month ago. People don't think things are real because they don't know anyone who has it. It's just selfish.

So, the fill-in-the-blank apology of self-reflection and regret combined with the slap on the wrist from the CEO? Yeah, no.

So, the fill-in-the-blank apology of self-reflection and regret combined with the slap on the wrist from the CEO? Yeah, no. You quoted the CEO's response instead of EC's response, so I'm a bit unclear..... are you "yeah no-ing" EC's or the CEO's response? Because I think the CEO's response was quite impressive and seems genuine to me. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who say "yeah but she's just trying to save the brand." But I think her response was very good.

You can't hold her or the other employees at fault for ECs stupidity. And EC, as a business owner with her name plastered on everything, should realize that one stupid move can ruin a brand. She should have seen what she did was bad and why instead of making more excuses. The CEO shouldn't have to clean up ECs mess.

The CEO's "hand slappy" is not showing that they are serious, IMHO. To me, I see these both as blowover apologies. Say ooh, I sorry, and go away for a tad bit til either something else comes along to take the headline or til people are sad because they need new stickers and planner covers. Follow the money.

What I would want to see from the CEO are specifics: -partnerships to create products for an under-served market. -programs, mentorships and paid internships to recruit and develop a pipeline in minority communities -investments into funding scholarships in business and graphic design for HBCU -training for all employees, not just leadership, around racial inequity, implicit bias, white privilege, and civil rights history -in post-pandemic times, planning conventions with inner-city partnerships to host, manage, staff, volunteer, as another way to build new relationships
Pick a couple. It's not an exhaustive list and I wouldn't expect a small company of 200 people to take it all on. I just see broad platitudes about doing better and I want to know what that really looks like to the CEO. As long as EC is the name of the brand, her actions will continue to reflect on the company. I frankly would start by taking her name off the brand. And agree to accept her departure from the company, as opposed to this paid vacation of self-enlightenment that she apparently is taking as her apology tour.

Honestly, it sounds like something I would have done in high school. They went around the rules to have their own graduation celebration. I think there is a very real concern about depression and suicide risks for teens who have been isolated for months, and a lot of teens need the ceremonies of senior year for closure on such an important chapter of their lives. I would have preferred they wear masks, but again, they are young and feel invincible. I'd argue most of us felt that way when we were under 25. I get that, but they already had a school sanctioned event that was going to give them the closure of graduating. Safely. Each graduate was allowed to go on stage in alphabetical order and get their named called and handed a diploma. The event was going to be broadcast so loved ones could see and celebrate. EC and friends did not think that was enough, so they asked the LA County Health Department for permission to march from pier to pier. Our Covid numbers are terrible, and we're the last county to be granted any loosening of restrictions. There was a health risk and she knew it. The pier to pier thing is a class tradition from the beginning of time . There are two beach communities -- Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach -- that share a border and Hermosa Beach is so small that it does not have a high school. Kids in Hermosa Beach often attend the local high school in Manhattan Beach as a result, hence the marching back and forth). So for EC and crew to just flaunt their march after explicitly being told "no" by the health department, that's just bad taste. It smacks of entitlement. To be fair to her it's an affluent community and I'm sure the kids would have been up to something similar, regardless ... but that does not give her the right to be part of the problem or excuse the behavior. As an adult she had to know this was in poor taste, but instead she helped coordinate it. Bad decision making.

I’m not sure she should be attacked for the actions of her children. Her kids are 18 yr olds who have graduated from high school. She was part of the parent's graduation committee and her kid was the class president. She was very much instrumental in coordinating this.

A feature of right-wing thinking is not caring about something unless it affects you or your family PERSONALLY. It's like they missed the whole sections of the bible they love so much that talks about caring for others.

Erin's apology, to me, absolutely stinks of "I'm sorry I made this mistake, and I'm sorry because I was called out on how stupid and selfish I was being." It does not sound genuine at all, it's an "I need to cover my ass and say something" statement. Hopefully I'm wrong and she's actually practicing some reflection and learning, but I doubt it. It seemed like a lot of planning went into this event and the gross commandeering of a civil rights movement to fit her narrative. Planning is her thing. It's literally what her company is based on. She knew exactly what she was doing.

I should have known the P's would be all over this story!! I haven't been around much; seeing some opinions about Covid on the boards while being on the frontlines in NYC was too much.
That being said, I've used EC for years and this year I really got into the planner community as a distraction. What better way to forget 2020 than to start planning 2021? EC launched next year's planner and a bunch of new stuff at the end of April. I (happily) spent more money on planner stuff than I ever thought I would. So much fun!
Imagine my surprise and heartbreak when things unfolded this week. I'm looking at a box full of stuff and a planner that starts in July trying to decide what to do. Reading people's thoughts on IG has been uplifting in one hand and so disturbing on the other. As many times I've said to myself over the last few days that I was going to stop reading I go right back to it.
I am mostly amazed by the people who stubbornly refuse to understand privilege. The ones who don't understand that there is no comparison between the minor inconveniences of life and the daily battle to stay alive as a Black person. Think I'm exaggerating? Ask Breonna Taylor's family whether they thought their daughter would be murdered by the police while she was sleeping in her bed.
I don't know what I'm going to do with my planner, my thoughts change every day. The one thing I do know is 2020 has been indescribable as far as the things that I've seen and the lessons I've learned. And we're only a little bit more than halfway through.

Her handling of this makes her seem to suck even harder than her initial support of the kids' stupidity. And if you want to be taken seriously, Erin, start responding to the asses on your IG posting things like I mentioned above: Some woman w/IG melissacpereira was defending EC on IG saying a poster's "Black Privilege" was showing. You need to shut that shit down HARD and FAST if you're serious, Erin!

She doesn’t think she made a mistake and she certainly doesn’t see how stupid and selfish she was being. Did anyone see the pics posted on the SB board? There are several photos of the supposed BLM protest, of course mostly white kids in graduation gowns, but they have a few pictures where the graduates have their arms around some Black people that are not in graduation garb and probably were just out and about and were grabbed for a photo with these kids. It just looks like they grabbed those boys because they are Black and wanted to use them for their photos to support their BS narrative of what they were doing. Makes me sick.
