At the end of this year my 12 by 12 album shelf is going to be full. I've been putting off deciding what I want to do... keep doing 12 by 12 and build my own shelves, or switch to a size that fits easier on a standard bookcase. The color of album I was using aren't easy to find anymore, so I am switching colors/album brands anyway...
I like square pages but since 10 by 10 is practically non-existent, and 8 by 8 is too small...
Do you think 9 by 12 is going to stick around, or is it a trend that will become hard to find in the future?
And is it that much different than scrapping 8.5 by 11? I mean that extra inch might make a huge difference...
If I do switch to rectangle pages, I'm tempted to make them landscape but would it be weird to have to turn the album sideways to look at the pages?
Besides taking up less space, I am excited that I could print things off my computer directly onto the cardstock and/or scan my entire layout with my existing scanner...
Not so excited about not being able to use those full page 12 by 12 scenery papers (like Carta Bella makes) in full, or making rectangular pages instead of squares.
I was digging into a box of 50 8.5 by 11 page protectors yesterday (to add my kids' school award to my album) and not having to buy page protectors 10 at a time is also a bonus.
Help me make up my mind, I have not been looking forward to making this decision!

square and rectangle are two different styles of layouts - I scrap 8.5x11 and 8x8 and it's mental switch. I would test scrap some 8.5x11 or 9x12 before switching. Landscape albums are almost impossible to find (yet digital 8.5x11 are almost all landscape - go figure).
I think you've covered the pros and cons fairly well - most sketches do adapt well if you're a sketch user. Some 12 x 12 full page designs can be cut down but not all by any means.

I know it's a shift in thinking, which is why I can't make a decision... if only 10 by 10 was a thing!

I have been scrapping 9x12 since 2016 and it looks like it’s becoming more mainstream just now. At first it was weird to switch from 12x12 but now I will never go back to 12x12. I like the idea of trying out to make a layout and see how you like it. If you like to mix in pocket pages with regular layouts then 9x12 have a few configurations of protectors that can be used for that purpose.
