Yesterday was the first day that our store opened to customers since March.
Customers have to wear a mask to walk in the door, but the second they are in the store, most (truly most!) pull it down past their chin.
Our state "recommends" mask wearing, but it's not enforced by law.
The store manager said in a store meeting that we are not to confront customers. (Obviously I wouldn't anyway, because you never know how people will react)
But I'm just so sad and stressed. I've been so careful for all these months, not going into stores frivolously, not traveling, not hanging out with anyone outside my household.
And now hundreds of customers can just waltz in, mask pulled down, sneezing, coughing, not maintaining social distance....
But it's Profits over People.

I blame the customers. People suck. I am really shocked at the number of people who refuse to do something so simple, for the greater good.
I am really sorry you have to deal with that.

I'm sorry you have to deal with the uncaring public. My 18 year old just went back to her retail job. Not only does she have to deal with un-masked customers (she said the vast majority don't wear them) but she also did not receive the pay raise she earned. Her employer suspended all raises. It sucks that this is the month she was supposed to get the raise.
She said she never realized how close customers get to her until now. They literally get right in front of her face. At least she is wearing a mask.

Yeah, mask wearing is the law/rule here and still people aren’t wearing them right. Some asshole sniffled right at me Thursday. Nose hanging out of his filthy mask. ( have we even been wearing them long enough for them to get filthy )
I was a bit rude about it but it was a health care facility they of all places should be taking this seriously.
I wanted to shout: Cover your god damned nose or why bother pretending to wear the god damned mask.
Instead I mumbled under my breath.
Place sent me a survey request - yup I filled it out.
I actually find it more of an asshole move to put on the mask but wear it wrong.
I’m sorry you all have to deal with the unmasked public.

I was in the airport last weekend. Went to get a bottle of water, everyone was wearing a mask and social distancing in line. Clerk yells at someone to get their mask on, WHILE she's wearing her mask under her nose. It's really going both ways.

Honestly I’m torn on what stores should do. It’s kinda a damned if you do, damned if you don’t thing. There has been more than one case where an employee was hurt or killed when confronting a customer about a mask so I can understand why places are hesitant to enforce it.
Do you have plexiglass by the register? I would expect my employer to install that at bare minimum. Even if you’re a floor worker you could “take cover” there when someone is maskless (I assume you’re working in a small retail shop). You could also wear a plastic shield if you wanted.

I’m not happy with the situation in my workplace either ( private osteopath practice ). The place isn’t getting cleaned regularly ( my boss half-heartedly wipes door handles) we were told we wouldn't be handling the money or the dirty couch and pillow covers - but now she’s asking us to . She also had us back to work for two days whilst on furlough -I’m seriously considering reporting but I don’t want to lose my job .
My colleague/opposite- number ( we split the 10 hr shift ) Are desperately trying to keep ourselves safe. We have found patients using our toilet - even though it says staff only - and I had one woman pick the door barrier up, put it aside and walk right up to my desk ( we have no Perspex screen)- she swore at me when I asked her ( politely) to move back away from me. As soon as they leave her room ( where they are required to wear a mask to receive treatment ) they remove their mask and I’ve found them discarded on the floor even though there are three bins around the place . I’ve only worked three shifts this week to see all this! My boss has asked me if I would like to increase my hours- I very quickly declined!

I’m so sorry. It bugs me so much when people (customers AND employees) don’t wear a mask (wear it improperly) at the stores. It’s not hard people.
The only thing you can do is to wear your own mask, and try and maintain a safe distance from the customers. Carry hand sanitizer in your pocket and use it frequently.

Do you have plexiglass by the register? I would expect my employer to install that at bare minimum. We have had a few auctions since things opened back up. I run the 'office' functions there -- registering bidders, handling absentee/phone bids, and checking people out at the end. My boss had plexiglass installed over my office window and is providing masks free to customers who come without one. Staff working the floor are required to wear one. I have felt comfortable with that and appreciate the efforts being made. Can you talk with them about plexiglass barriers? Or at the very least, a table put in front of the registers/counters to force people to stand back further. I've seen that done at some places.

We opened up June 1st. All employees must wear a mask unless they are in their office or social distancing at lunch/smoke break. Customers do not have to wear a mask, but we are offering them. We also have thermal cameras at the entrance for customers. At the employee entrance, every employee must have their temperature checked before they start work. While we were closed for two month, the entire facility was sanitized and we received those spray guns that sanitize. I don't work face to face with customers so I'm not concerned about returning to work on Monday. I appreciate my company's efforts to reopen as safely as possible while trying to stay in business.

Sorry you’re dealing with that. A friend of mine works retail, she carries around a yardstick and asks people to back up if they’re too close. Their store has a service animals only policy but employees are not allowed to enforce it. People bring In everything from a snake that got loose, lizards, birds etc. Around here most people I’ve seen in stores are wearing masks, they are really recommended but not required. In Trader Joe’s, I think I only saw one woman (customer) not wearing one.

I would put something in writing to your HR department now about your concerns about their lack of enforcement. While the state recommends and not requires, a business could certainly make it clear that mask wearing is expected.
It may not change anything, but if you (and other employees) start making a fuss, maybe they'll get on it a bit more with in-store announcements, signage, etc.

I was at my cancer center yesterday for a checkup and there were people in the waiting room who kept their masks pulled underneath their nose. I was so mad! These were people accompanying patients, so they obviously cared more about their own comfort than their loved one's health.

Where I am receiving treatment, they aren't allowing any visitor/guests to come along with you. Whether you are there for an infusion or a check up with your Dr, the accompanying person must wait outside.

I’m sorry you’re stressed. How big is your store and what do you sell?
Our province hasn’t mandated masks but has suggested them. Many stores have signs that read please consider a mask to protect others. I was in a fav small boutique store recently. They didn’t require a mask but had masks and sanitizer at the front as a suggestion. When I put on my mask the employee said to respect my choice she’d put on hers. It wasn’t required. They only allowed 2 shoppers at a time.

This has been the case at the doctor’s office I have been to, and the several health facilities (doctors, imaging, PT) DH has been to as well. Is there a reason someone might need another person to accompany them inside at the cancer center? Rhondito, that’d be the one place you’d expect full compliance, right? And the one group of people you’d think you wouldn’t need to ask for it.

There was one lady in a wheelchair who definitely looked as if she needed someone with her, but the others could have gone on their own.
The last time I was there in March no one could go in except for patients and I was expecting the same this time, but there were signs up saying one person could accompany each patient.

I am sorry. I can’t really blame businesses for not doing customer enforcement — I’ve seen some of the videos of customers becoming combative, and I think retail workers generally aren’t paid enough to be expected to manage that (it reminds me of how when I worked retail we were told not to confront shoplifters).
I am sorry you are dealing with this. To me, wearing a mask seems like the very least you could do right now, and the few non-grocery retail outlets here I have been in since the orders began have required masks (and everyone wore one, except at Target).

Are all the employees wearing masks and wearing them properly? I've noticed this to be the main indicator of whether customers will wear them, modeling. I went to one locally owned store this week where the employees don't wear masks and I was the only customer wearing one (people were wearing them a lot more 2 months ago). Then I went to the Dollar Tree. Almost everyone had on a mask, I get to the checkout and the clerk has on a mask and gloves. I've noticed this at many other businesses.

shescrafty I don’t know specifics, but they’re commercial cleaners. It’s something like this disinfectingmachines.com/product/electro-sprayer-disinfectant-spray-machine/Rhondito I was also at my cancer center yesterday. I had to check in at the door and they verified I had an appt , wearing a mask (they had masks available), got a temperature check, used the hand sanitizer, and had to wear a sticker that was very big showing I had checked in and the date. Only appt holders were allowed in. But, I admit my hospital is on the cutting edge of this type of stuff. We have the Ebola unit and the initial cruise COVID patients came here. Shout out to Nebraska Medicine/University of Nebraska Med Center.

What does your manager say you should do if you feel unsafe? They will tell you that these current conditions are mandated by the government for the foreseeable future, so if you feel unsafe then unfortunately this may not be the job for you any more.
