I have been thinking about voting a lot lately. I hesitated to start a thread about it until I read these two tweets..

Who do you think “We the People” are in the preamble to the Constitution above?
Its us.
It was “We the People” who fought a war against the UK and won the independence for 13 colonies. It was “We the People “ who formed the country. And since then it has been generations of “We the People” who have shaped this country by our votes.
Voting in this country is a right. Although I read an essay that yea it’s a right subject to laws enacted by various states. And that is true in that there are certain states trying to suppress voting for some by their laws.
Voting in this country is a privilege that not all countries in the world have.
But the most important thing is voting is a responsibility because it’s “We the People” through our voting that sets the course of this country. No one else, just “We the People” by the people we elect and by the propositions we pass. We do it on the local level, we do it on the state level and we do it on the Federal level.
Here are some numbers that I found interesting and somewhat depressing. They are the most current that I could find, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t more current ones out there, I just couldn’t find them. These numbers tell a story of a lack of interest by “We the People”.
In 2016 there were 138,000,000 people who voted out of 230,931,921 of voting eligible people.
As of April 2020 on information from the census bureau there are 147,203,000 registered voters.
Right now, in my opinion, this country is at a crossroads. There is a lot going on. There are issues we refused to deal with that have been simmering beneath the surface for way too long that are now boiling over. We are in the middle of a pandemic that too many aren’t taking seriously. We have an incredibly incompetent fool sitting in the White House and we have a political party that literally has them doing whatever it takes to keep them in power at the expense of the country.
And there is a giant case of apathy among “We the People”.
Someone on this board, and I can’t remember who, said while she wouldn’t be voting for trump, she wouldn’t vote for the Democratic Candidate either because she was afraid she would lose her civil liberties.
If we don’t fix this mess, losing your civil liberties will be the least of your worries.
Which means “We the People” on both sides of the political spectrum need to get cracking and fix this mess we created. And yes “We the People” made this mess through our apathy, and not taking the time to make informed votes, and coming up with silly reasons to justify not voting or voting third party.
In that trump tweet, I don’t know if the leader of BLM said it the way trump is showing. I certainly hope not. Not about change, but the bit by about burning down the system with real fire. Protests are fine , but real lasting change comes through the ballot box and getting involved.
And when I say getting involved I mean like Lucy McBath and Ella Jones who for various reasons felt there needed to be change so they got involved and ran for public office. Lucy McBath is in Congress and Ella Jones is the new mayor of Ferguson, Mo. Or being part of grass roots organizations that fights against those laws that try and limit who can vote or work to find and then get the best candidates elected. And when I talk about the best candidates I’m not talking about people like Jim Jordan among others. They don’t belong in our government and there are better people out there, on both sides of the political spectrum, to chose from then this lot. Or at the very minimum, fulfilling your responsibility as part of “We the People” and showing up to make an informed vote.
This election could very well be the most consequential election this country has ever faced and “We the People” can’t afford to mess it up. Not on the local level, not on the state level, and not on the Federal level.
At this point it’s up to “We the People” and what we decide to do in November that determines the fate of this country probably more so at this time than at any other time in the history of this country.

This election could very well be the most consequential election this country has ever faced and “We the People” can’t afford to mess it up. Not on the local level, not on the state level, and not on the Federal level. At this point it’s up to “We the People” and what we decide to do in November that determines the fate of this country probably more so at this time than at any other time in the history of this country. Yes. "WE the people" must vote this years, do not count on the polling numbers being accurate! "We the People" must also do what we can to become poll clerks, poll watchers. Different areas should not have to claim they are closing polling places because there is a lack of poll clerks. There are many other things "We the People" can do to make it easier for others to vote.

Voting in this country is a privilege that not all countries in the world have.
But the most important thing is voting is a responsibility This is precisely why I vote!! My parents come from a country where it is not unusual for opponents and their families to be killed off even in the most local, rural elections. It is where votes can be bought and ballots can be tampered with. Voting places can be not readily accessible and vote by mail is not an option for most most people. Voting can be suppressed. One of my fondest memories growing up was watching my dad and grandfather sit together and go over their sample ballots before going to the polls to coffee in a US election. They never missed an election and when both became too old to go in person, they voted by mail. As a citizen, I exercise my right and privelege to vote. I don't have to be afraid to go to the polls. I am confident in the integrity of the results. I vote so my voice can be heard and i can be counted.

I don’t think there’s a lot of apathy in the country right now. Quite the opposite. Elections since 2018 have had a high turnout. There’s lots of interest in the recent primaries and upcoming presidential election.
But young people need to actually get out and vote (they always say they will, and then they don’t) and we have to act decisively to overcome all the stumbling blocks the red states are trying to put in the way of Democratic voters.

I hesitate to disagree with you 😀 but... A group headquartered in Florida called U.S. Election Project tracks our elections. And they already have data for the 2020 primaries. linkThis group doesn’t base the numbers on registered voters but VEP aka as Voter Eligible Population. Which actually makes sense when you think about it. For CA the total VEP is 25,723,148. The VEP turnout for the primary election was 37.7%. 5,784,364 Democrats and 2,471,580 Republicans. By the time the election happened it was clear Biden was going to be the nominee which is probably one of the reason for the low VEP number. Problem with that is there were other items on the ballot to vote for beside picking a presidential nominee. An example, for two of the last three years Sonoma County has been hit hard by wildfires and thousands of homes were destroyed. On the ballot was a proposition that would increase the sales tax by 1/4 cent to buy additional firefighting equipment for the county. It just lost and you have to wonder if more people had turned out to vote if it would have won. Another number I have is currently in CA there are 15,690,000 registered voters. If that VEP number is accurate and the number of registered voters is accurate, what’s up with the 10M residents that aren’t registered? The voter turnout should be at or close to 100% for every election. And it’s not.

“We the People” are us...citizens...you and me and the guy across the street. I believe ALL citizens of voting age have a duty to vote. That’s what makes us....us. 😊 There’s no excuse. I especially dislike the excuse of “I live in a red/blue state so my vote doesn’t count.” Your vote doesn’t count because you refuse to vote.
There’s an oft-used phrase “I only have to do two things; pay taxes and die.” I submit the correct phrase is “pay taxes, vote and die.”

What makes it seem like I don’t have a grip? I’m just loving pointing out the barrage of deflection. I’ve never seen so many cute dog videos, Amber Alert pass-alongs, and conspiracy theories wrapped up in non sequiturs posted by all my right-leaning contacts on social media. Sort of like crickets, but a different kind of noisy.

A variety of reasons? Like her son being murdered? Why are Black women tasked with fixing this country given our mistreatment and lack of protection?
When did it become okay to expect victims to dismantle systems and confront their abusers?

If there wasn't apathy the difference between voting eligible and registered voters wouldn't be so huge. The gap between who is eligible and who is registered should be <10% (imo), not 35ish.
