I love the look of hand sewing (and sewing machine sewing for that matter) on layouts but my problem is that whenever I try this, the hole left by the needle is always larger than the yarn, string, etc. that I'm using, which makes the result look terrible. The holes are always big and very noticeable. I would prefer to use an embroidery floss, but then I have to use an embroidery needle so that the hole is big enough for the floss, which makes an even bigger hole. I've seen some beautiful layouts with stitching and I can't figure out how it's done. Does anyone know?

I use embroidery floss -- usually I pull a few strands and separate them from the rest. I then use a regular needle with the strands I seperated.

You need a thinner needle. I wax my thread to make it easier to thread the needle. You would only need to wax it an inch or so at the end.

Yep. I use a thinner needle and just a few strands. I don't notice the holes at all.

Allison Davis (with Scrapbook Generation) did a video on how she hand stitches on her layouts. I found it very helpful. Here is a link to her Youtube video How To Add Hand Stitching To Scrapbook Layouts. Short answer on a couple of your questions. Allison uses only 3 strands of embroidery floss and a Size 7 needle.

I hated embroidery floss on my LO's because it seemed the strands would always separate on me. Instead I use craft and button thread or outdoor thread. It is thicker than regular thread, but not as thick as three strands of embroidery floss.
Also, I poke my holes before I do my sewing. Takes longer, but I feel that it looks better. It helps if you put your cardstock/paper over fun foam before poking the holes. If my holes look too large when I'm finished I will run a bone folder over the holes on the back side.

Ok I think my problem is the size of my needle. Size 7 eh? I had no idea they were even numbered! The one I was trying to use really is meant only for thread and trying to figure out how to fit more than one strand of embroidery floss in the hole was perplexing.

I do not like the needle AD reccomended.
I use the same needles and methid as ai do for cross stitching on 18 ct fabric.
Size 22 needle 1 strand of floss, folded in half to use loop method to secure first stitch.

I think a size 7 needle is still pretty big in the longer eyed needles. Look for a long eyed needle. They will be thinner in the eye area. The higher the number, the thinner the needle (unless it’s a sharp, which is the opposite. But sharps have small eyes. Let me look for a link.

John James is my favorite brand of needles. I usually buy them from the quilt shop, but I’ve also bought them from Amazon. I like the weight of them and they never have burrs on the ends. You can see the different types of needles here. This is a great guide that really zooms in on each type of needle and you can really see how the eyes differ in each type of needle. I wouldn’t use a cross stitch needle because the end is blunt. I’d look for a chenille or darning needle because they have a longer eye which will help if you are sewing with multiple strands of embroidery floss.
