And did you happen to see the cops in riot gear spraying pepper spray into a crowd of people at a vigil in his memory where people were playing violins? Playing violins!!!

Yeah. No overkill in that scenario.

When I was a small child, I remember people gathering around Televisions to stay abreast of a missing little girl in Aurora, Colorado. They eventually found her body stuffed under the flooring of a shed. Everyone was just horrified. How in the world could such a horrific crime like that happen in the state of Colorado? Then one would hear of another crime in Aurora and then another and another. It appeared this city was starting a trend in crime compared to anywhere else in Colorado. I don't know if it was early on that their police force decided to get "tough" or what, but they have always had the reputation of being badasses. I'm white and I avoid Aurora if possible as I never want to confront an officer from that city. So sad for all those that have lost their life due to a self-righteous asshole police officer.

There is a change.org petition you can sign to put pressure on officials to seek justice for Elijah McClain’s murder. I’ll see if I can find the link. Every time I think of that poor young boy I cry.

This sweet young man’s death just breaks my heart. Absolutely no reason for it, and the transcript is horrifying.

Absolutely heartbreaking.
I wish that they would charge these 'good citizens' who report suspicious persons, without any suspicion other than they themselves are racist as accessories to these crimes. Same for whoever called about the alleged counterfeit $20 bill for George Floyd. I hope karma bites them both.

It’s the sort of thing I think you can only do when you don’t fully consider him to be a person in the first place.

I signed it a few days ago. Horrific case and horrific that it takes so much time and enormous amount of public outcry to get the case reopened. Always makes me wonder about all the cases we never hear of...

It gets worse when you realize this is the same Police department who took the Aurora movie shooter into custody in the theater parking lot, while he was carrying a knife, handgun and rifle after killing 12 and injuring 70 people. The difference, according to the police was "not resisting," while Elijah was "strongly resisting."
Yeah, I don't feel better either.

When I first read the title blurb, I thought it was an auto correct error for violent/violence, but because it was a real word it got through. But no, just utterly horrific truth.

Elijah was all that is good in the world, personified. The horrific way his life was cut short, cannot be in vain. Those officers NEED to pay for this. May they never see the light of day again.

After a while, words and outrage feel hollow. I'm working to do better and be better. Trying to encourage those around me to be better. Using this moment in history to, I hope, raise men who will be staunchly anti-racist.
Elijah McClain and Breonna Taylor's murders are finally receiving the scrutiny they deserve. It is devastating to think of how many similar murders there have been that will never see the light of day.

They become especially hollow when we can all acknowledge this was a long time coming. The sad fact is no one cared enough and more innocent people died as a result. You can’t say you weren’t put on notice. I told you and no one gave a damn. Sounds harsh but it’s the absolute truth. Examine why this moment in history is any different from previous moments where your actionable change could have resulted in police reform. I think we’ve already heard the “raising better children” spiel as a society. I think that’s only a small part of the solve. Also Black people have managed to rear children who aren’t racially violent even with all the racial violence directed at them. How? time.com/5362786/talking-racism-with-white-kids-not-enough/

I wonder if those 911 callers have remorse for calling. I don't think I could live with myself knowing it was my call that sparked the events that led to these horrible murders.

My DD was at the protest for Elijah in Aurora last Saturday. It was her first and she said it was an amazing and predominantly peaceful experience. Her favorite part was marching and suddenly realizing they were on a highway. They shut down a highway! She wanted to stay for the violin vigil but had to leave before it started. I'm glad she got out of there before the police ruined it.

The fact that the murders and brutality continue should act as proof that the concern is exactly like it “seems”. I ask this with no malice: what power do you think I have that you do not? I am a woman of color. An average person with no clout and not nearly enough money to have any political connections. I have been engaging my elected representatives since I was 12, and, with one exception, have never received more than a form letter or automated response. There is no defense for the systemic inhumanity and injustice that Black people continue to be subjected to and I am in no way attempting to mount one.
