The crisper drawer is always the culprit in my house. 9 times out of 10 there's a liquifying half a cucumber back here.

Rotting veggies or sour milk that spilled is our usual culprit. But the absolute WORST smell? An entire freezer full of thawed out rotting meat that sat in a 85° garage for two weeks before we realized what happened. (A workman unplugged it, didn’t plug it back in and then pushed it back into place, so we didn’t know it had been unplugged until everything was rotten a couple weeks later. OMG, worst.smell.ever.)

Cheese! I can’t believe nobody has said cheese. French cheese. Pont l’evêque, brie de meaux, camembert. It’s a bit of a dilemma because the smelliest cheeses are usually the best ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) but it does wake you up when you open the fridge in the morning - and not in a good way. That is way fancier cheese than we stock !!

Could it be vegetables? When we notice a really bad smell in the pantry, it's potatoes!

Broccoli even if it doesn't look like disgusting mess it smells first. We just went through this recently. Checked everything and still couldn't figure it out. Opened the bag with the broccoli in it and almost passed out. It looked fine though.

I don't know what it usually is, but my dad once found a dead mouse in the water line. The fridge smelled awful and they were at their wit's end trying to figure out what was causing it since it.

oh, last winter, we had theee worst smell. I kept looking and looking. but couldn't find anything. I asked my dh, and he looked. Here a very small container, like those small ones from the deli, had slipped down under a pull out drawer for veggies..filled with leeches for fishing..................yea.. I was not happy

That is way fancier cheese than we stock !! The benefits (or not!) of living in Europe. You can buy these everywhere, even the local supermarket. You can buy Brie or Camembert in most US grocery stores, but it’s expensive. I bought Camembert yesterday for 2.50€ and it was the name brand stuff in the fancy round wooden box. Wine and cheese are so cheap here!

Same here, and our local store sells small pieces of many different cheeses for €1,- ($1.12) each. Great for a tasting. So yes, smelly fridge = cheese over here 😃
