Gimme clues. I don’t want to full-on clean that sucker out.

Often a forgotten zucchini, or half a pepper, neglected cucumber end, any of which can liquefy and easily hide out in the back of the crisper drawers.

I had a (commercially) fresh salsa in a plastic container start to go bad one time--I think it started to ferment and the change in pressure popped the lid open a little and all I could smell every time I opened the fridge was a garlic smell.

Beans smell awful when they go bad. Any leftover beans? Otherwise I vote for what Ashley said - especially a smelly veg like broccoli, brussels sprouts or cabbage.

I find the culprit is usually in the veggie drawer, too.

Another vote for beans, even in a tightly sealed container.

It’s usually black beans for us. Just reading this induced gag reflex. I had forgotten this horrific odour — i recall now that this is why I no longer put away black beans in the fridge.

For us it’s usually some sort of leftover chicken with garlic or soup that doesn’t get finished and stays in there a few days too long. I’ve never had vegetables rot long enough to start stinking. 🤷♀️

Last time this happened it was half a Cucumber hiding at the back of the salad drawer. I put my fingers straight into the mush ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/c2qi57qoGpXKdFvBtXdt.jpg) and then had to take a few minutes to compose myself before cleaning the drawer out..

I find the culprit is usually a small pepper or some other vegetable that has fallen behind a drawer or shelf. One time it was a forgotten bag of cabbage. 🤢

I don't recall anything in a closed container giving off a smell no matter how moldy or puffed up the lid might be, so would go to the produce drawer(s) first.
My most common offenders are a rotten cutie in the middle of any otherwise fresh looking bag or melting greens (spinach, lettuce, etc.). Good luck!

Wasn't a hit you in the face smell, but knew something wasn't quite right. Went digging and found a container that had slice pineapple in it. I opened it and the fuzz about attacked me. lol

Cheese! I can’t believe nobody has said cheese. French cheese. Pont l’evêque, brie de meaux, camembert. It’s a bit of a dilemma because the smelliest cheeses are usually the best ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) but it does wake you up when you open the fridge in the morning - and not in a good way.

My last stinky was a Cutie orange that somehow jumped out of the mesh bag and rolled behind the produce drawer.
