I moved out for good at 22, the summer I graduated college. My parents left the room as it was and I think the only changes were that my mom took over the closet and the dresser drawers for a lot of her stuff. It was always a guest room after I moved out. I don't think they ever even repainted it.

I left way too soon and needed time to grow and mature. I changed career paths and I moved back home twice in 3 years. The 2nd time I moved back home I was getting it together and going back to school. I lived there for free, because they were so relieved that I went back to school. So, that was really a good year, because I was working hard. Nevertheless, when I finally left for good they had some sudden upheaval and moved to a different city. So, I really never had a room after that, but I was always welcome in their home and it was very clear that it was my home, too. By that time, it didn't matter, because I was on my own and doing fine. Some flowers require a bit more watering.
ETA: When my kids moved out to attend college we didn't change anything. Now they're stuck here due to Covid I'm very grateful that they have their own bedrooms and work spaces. We don't need their rooms and I want them to know that this will always be their home. Though it's time for them to flee the nest and create their own homes and build their lives after college.
