I’m curious as well. They just talked about this on the Today show and reported that the child said that they had been swimming and he got back on the boat but she didn’t. Was the life jacket in the boat hers and she took it off? I’m not a boater...would going swimming off of a boat with a 4 year old and no other adults be something that people would do regularly? It doesn’t seem very safe to me but maybe people do it all the time? That was my thought as well.....so what caused her to get off the boat (assuming she didn't fall off)? It had to be something pretty big that would force a mother to leave her young child like that. I am being serious, but maybe she had to pee. It so sad though! I can't imagine how scared that poor child must have felt not seeing his mom come back up.

But IDK how she drowned, unless the shock of the cold water triggered some sort of seizure or something?

Or maybe the son fell in and she jumped in to save him and then couldn't make it back in herself for some reason? A 4 year old's version of events is not going to be the most accurate, unfortunately they will probably never know what happened.

Anyone who has been even remotely around boats would know that leaving a small child on a boat while you take a dip is a huge NO. I'm always amazed at how stupid people are around water. I've spent my life around big inland lakes, specifically Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Respect the water. Even small inland lakes. Hell, even swimming pools. Respect the water. Thanks. I thought it would be a big NO but people do things that I think are careless all the time when it comes to hunting, not wearing life jackets, etc and it seems to be “normal” in their eyes.

This just seems like such a bizarre Mommy and me activity to do with a 4 year old. There’s got to be way more to this story.

I'm a little odd in that I'm typically not one to mourn celebrity losses, but I've always loved Naya's voice. So much talent, and I could listen to her sing all day. "Songbird" and "Landslide" were two of my Glee faves that have stuck with me to this day. Hoping against hope for a tragedy averted.

I’m so glad her friends and family will have closure, but, man, I was hoping for a different outcome. Rest her soul.

Im glad her family will have some closure, hopefully. Today is the day Cory Monteith passed away - how weird that they found her body on the same day.

If that's true, then yes, it's bizarre to take a 4 year old out alone on a pontoon boat for a 3 hour trip on spur of the moment. If this was something they had done together most weekends during the summers, then no, it would not be bizarre. A non-experienced boater, alone with a 4 year old, not wearing a life vest, is a disaster waiting to happen which unfortunately came true in this case.

IME non-experienced boaters rarely realize how risky things are. A pontoon boat probably seems really safe to most people - they aren't exactly built for speed and they just seem like a moving dock. Also, people tend to think if they can rent something without any requirements/licenses, it's harmless. I can totally imagine someone being at a lake like that and thinking it seems like a fun, casual afternoon activity, even if you've never boated before. I can't count how many times I see people renting canoes, kayaks, boats, etc. and the company requires everyone has a life jacket in the boat, but they never actually put it on. A lot of people are just really really naive/foolish around water. It's sad all around.

I don't think I ever watched Glee but this story is just so tragic. That poor little boy! He will need counseling in the years to come.

I am so sad for her son and her family and friends.
I'm not usually one to mourn celebrities, but I feel very sad about her losing her life on a simple day boating with her son.
Throw Kelly Preston and the anniversary of CM today... all so sad.

There is a first time to try everything. Yes, if she was unexperienced she made a big mistake by not having a life vest on. Not going to speculate about the loss of her life - sounds like a tragic accident.

A friend of a friend jumped into the ocean in Mexico and broke his neck (he eventually was ok).
We once booked a houseboat during a drought and the boat company told us to be very careful about jumping into the water, as it could be more shallow than it looks. When I hear about boat accidents I always think of shallow water. They said the area the boat was found was 30 feet deep, but what if that’s not where it happened? I’m just speculating and assuming that it was a terrible accident. That poor boy, and her family.
