Great question! I know the more obvious ones but would be interested to see if there are lurkers or less frequent posters from countries who don't feature much here. England/UK here too I have a question for you! I still say England, but everyone else I know (in the US) says "the UK". Which is preferred, and what is the difference (more countries part of the UK?). I have always been curious, but never felt it was an appropriate question. But because we are talking about where we live, I thought maybe I could ask.

So happy to have you all on board! My daughter lives in Switzerland, her twin sister is moving to London by the end of the year (because of Brexit, she has to move prior to Dec 31) and I am considering moving to Ireland if not next year, the year after. I still have one kid left in university. For our Norwegians, Norway was my last trip pre-COVID. I was there in January/February and fell in LOVE with your country!! I was in Tromso for the most part, but loved every second of my visit! Lucky you! How did you like the winter darkness?

But because we are talking about where we live, I thought maybe I could ask. In my own personal opinion and going only on my own experience, I feel that as a country, England is having her patriotism and individuality crushed out of her. The other countries of the United Kingdom are allowed to be proud to be Irish, Scottish and Welsh, but as soon as the English say we're English, someone "corrects" us with "British". I am English and British. I live in the beautiful west of England, in Great Britain and in the United Kingdom. When I fill any form in on the internet with my address, even for a family-run shop in my own town, I have to select my country as United Kingdom. England doesn't appear, although Wales, Scotland and Ireland do. Most countries have a friendly (or not so friendly) rivalry with the neighbouring country. England has 3 next-door-neighbours, plus France to hate us - we haven't got a chance!

England, Scotland and Wales collectively form Great Britain and the UK is GB plus Northern Ireland. Each is it's own country so I am English but I am also British.

But because we are talking about where we live, I thought maybe I could ask. Ask away, to add to the answers from gar and RedSquirrelUK, it's like an American could say they were American or Texan. At different times using one or other would be more accurate for the occasion. This video gives a quick overview, you only need to watch a couple of minutes before it moves on to talk about the Commonwealth. m.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10A clarification I would add is that descriptor Irish is usually meant to mean from the Republic of Ireland rather than Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK, ie the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) Sport is one area where country will be very important so e.g. football (soccer) is a huge sport in the British isles and each country plays in the major competitions (World Cup,Euros) as separate teams, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Of course there are always exceptions so when it comes to Rugby e.g. the Six Nations competition Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland play as Ireland. The other two non British Isles nations are France and Italy in that competition.

I live in Saudi Arabia but am from the USA. what city? I lived in Riyadh 2001-2002. Dhahran (East coast near the Arabian sea). We've lived here 8 years and are hoping to leave here within the next year. I've had enough expat life and things have changed here drastically the past couple years (good and bad, but enough bad to make us ready to leave)
