Loyola Chicago just announced on-line only. Except for labs and experiential classes and research. Students can still live on campus in single rooms. At least, that’s the plan for now. And international students will be offered in person classes and research opportunities so they don’t get deported. Shhh.peabay, Loyola is three or fourish miles directly south of Northwestern.

(FYI: Illinois is one of the 17 or so states suing admin for deporting int'l students.)

Yeah, dd is trying to decide on campus or stay at home (freshman). She doesn’t have any labs or classes that she has to be in person for. It isn’t easy. Single dorm rooms, cafeteria will be take out only, limited social events (virtual dorm hall meetings, lounges closed, etc) vs. staying home with parents, but saving room & board.

Yes - we lived in Chicago for almost 10 years in the 80s and 90s. NU has said they will have a hybrid of online and in person. And they have joined the lawsuit against the federal government regarding international students, so I think they will make every effort to have some kind of in person classes so they can still have their international students.

We are in the NE suburbs and while the infection rate is low (we are red because of proximity to Chicago) people here, for the most part, are pretty serious about masks and social distance. There are always covidiots but fortunately not everywhere. We did have a local SpEd teacher arrested for spitting on someone in Costco after she yelled she had Covid. UGH. 1. Ugh is right! Unbelievable. Did she just feel like spreading the wealth or did she get into an altercation? (This sped teacher needs to know my flavor of sisterhood disdain) 2. Are we looking at the same map? Chicago/Cook County/My Hood shows orange, not red, when I open the map. How in the world did I miss hearing this? This is one of the two Costco’s where I shop. It’s pretty close to my work. Wow. I’d say that most people in the area are pretty compliant about wearing masks and being cooperative in general.

I agree Scrappinghappy JB was not high on my list either becuause of the toilet crap and it still irks me too. But he has done a realitively good job of listening to science. Lightfoot is doing a good job as well with Covid. I like Dr Alison, she's a pandemic chaser and I have no doubt it's not a mistake that Lightfoot brought her on staff in January. I’ve been out many times, and in all the places I’ve been to, I’ve only seen two people without masks. Been all over – Wrigleyville, Little Saigon, downtown, west suburbs, O’Hare, Evanston/Skokie, and although I’m retired I still keep a small office in Northbrook…all the same observation. No one has made a fuss about mask-wearing and social distancing, although I did read there have been a few confrontations about it. However, nothing like what’s happening in other states. It doesn’t seem to be a controversial issue here. So altogether, I think Illinoisans are obeying Pritzker’s and health officials’ orders and guidelines. Thankfully. Pritzker was not high on my list of politicians, his toilet debacle still irks me, but I do have to say that I have been super impressed by the way he and his team have taken on Covid in Illinois. He and Dr Zika have done a really good job of impressing the seriousness and getting everyone on board. Every day when they announce the stats both of them take a moment to express sympathy and condolences for the lives lost. Every day! To them, it seems like every life counts, every death a big loss. I also think mobilizing that massive field hospital in McCormick place scared some serious shit into folks to take this seriously. Thank goodness we never had to use it to the full extent. Lori Lightfoot has also been amazing. Strong leadership and not afraid to speak her mind. I am so grateful we have good leadership here. Just wish it went way higher...how many deaths could have been prevented.

She was so excited to go. Then they announced single rooms - no big deal, especially for her - very introverted, with some online and some in person classes. That was okay. We will see with the updates what she decides to do. If she stays home this year, she can still attend and graduate debt free (if she goes to Chicago the next three years) but then she misses out what could her freshman year - be what it may. Her schedule still shows 3 in person classes, but I am not sure if that is finalized. We will let her decide and back her 100% whatever her choice. Likely won't make a final decision for a few weeks - or by the date we have to.

Keep it up, Illinois! I have a kid going to Northwestern in September!!! I've been watching your numbers closely - you're really doing well! (and coming from Connecticut, who is also doing well!!) I'm in Evanston. We had no deaths and no cases today. Overall it's been pretty low, but the students have not been here. I did see large unmasked groups of them during 4th of July weekend heading to the beach though.

I really trust my dd - she's, to put it bluntly, a nerd, and I don't have to worry about her at fraternity parties etc.... but if everyone else around her is ignoring mandates.... sigh.

TBH, I didn't see a lot of students masking...Maybe they were local teens (my neighbor's kids are never masked with their friends). However, my sitter is an NU student and she is super responsible (maybe because she believes in science).
