The surgery went well. I’ve been home just about a week. The pain is very tolerable and getting around with the walker is a breeze!
The problem is that I’ve had severe nausea. It went away over the weekend and I was able to eat but it came back yesterday. It’s awful. I’d rather have pain. I have a patch and am taking an rx for it but it’s still there. Every time I drink or eat or move.
Now, I’m quite sure I have a UTI. After going up and down the stairs in the middle of the night no less than 6 times To pee 4 drops the other night, I had DH get me some Uricalm. That helped so much last night but I have to see my Dr today. That means showering, getting in the car and then riding 20 minutes there. Ugh. If I wasn’t nauseous it wouldn’t be a big deal. But, I am and the thought of doing all that makes me wanna cry.
Thanks for listening!

So glad that your surgery went well! Wish the rest was going that well too. Hopefully the trip to the MD brings the rest of your issues under control quickly! Hope you are feeling better soon.

I’m so sorry. I get severely nauseated from anesthesia too. I was nauseated for a full month after one of my reconstruction surgeries. It really negatively impacts your quality of life. I hate it. Honestly, throughout my bilateral mastectomy and two 5-hour reconstruction surgeries, managing the nausea was much more challenging than managing the pain.
Just a heads up, during the last surgery they tried using the patch on me to help with the nausea. I then changed it after 3 days. 3 days later, I took it off and had severe rebound nausea. It felt like the whole world was a severely rocking boat deck. If I did anything but lay still I would throw up. It took 9-12 hours to get better. Some people are “blessed” with rebound nausea with the patch. Never again.
Next surgery, if you have another, ask for Emend before the anesthesia. It makes a WORLD of difference in the amount of nausea after general anesthesia. It is an expensive drug, used mainly with chemo patients, so they don’t readily offer it unless 1) your post-anesthesia nausea is documented and 2) you ask for it. It has to be taken 1-2 hours before the anesthesia and won’t work if you take it afterwards. For every pre-op meeting I have now, I make sure to tell them that I have severe nausea from anesthesia and need medication to help with it.

Like you said, they didn't offer it - I mentioned that in a previous surgery I was terribly nauseous afterwards and the anesthesiologist said: "I can take care of that." It helped so much!

How much are you taking for pain med's? I'm thinking your pain med's may be causing some of your nausea. Have you been able to decrease how much you are taking? and talk to your Dr about changing your med's if you are still taking them.

My thoughts as well, there are so many medications that can have this affect and if you are taking more pain relief it is, imho possibly the answer.

I’m so sorry. I get severe nausea with anesthesia too. I think the longest it’s affected me was 36 hrs though. I hope it either goes away on its own soon or you find relief via meds soon.

I'm sorry you're suffering. Nausea is one of the worst feelings, so hard to manage. I hope your doc has a good solution for you today!

Thanks everyone! Yesterday was tough but today is turning out much better!
I was prescribed Oxycodone 5 mg. I haven’t taken that in days. The Tylenol is working. My pain is minimal. I went to the Dr and she prescribed an antibiotic for the UTI and that has helped. The nausea is better today and I’ve been able to eat. I was dehydrated so that wasn’t helping.
I’m hopeful that between taking care of the UTI and dehydration I’ll be back on track!

I'm thinking the oxycodone didn't agree with you. I'd be surprised if the anesthesia caused that much problem for that long. Definitely have to take pain meds with food in your system. My patients tend to do better with not as strong of a narcotic, unless they are used to taking a lot of meds for chronic pain. I'm glad you're feeling better. The UTI certainly didn't help matters.

Thank you! I’m much better! I think it was probably the UTI because I only took the pain meds for a few days. I’ve been on antibiotics for 4 days for the UTI and the nausea is finally gone and overall I feel so much better!
I really need to focus on my knee now and PT! They’ve taken it a little easy on me because of the nausea but no more excuses!
