Does anyone have a kid in a regular sport or activity that has started fall registration?
My girls take competitive dance. Older dd is entering her 10th year so we’ve been committed for years. The groups / schedule came out and registration started. It is $$$$. It’s $$$$ every year but I thought this year would be more cautious and perhaps have a reduced schedule. Instead the schedule is super optimistic. She’s cut the classes in half so only 10 kids in a class and she put in a new ventilation system / distances square system in each studio.
Anyway, it’s a lot of money and if we end up on zooM again I’ll be the sucker who paid for a year of zoom dance classes. I only let my kids do the tech classes as they were a mandatory part of their program. I did not allow them to sign up for any choreography. I just don’t see them going to competitions or performing this year so i thought that choreo and costumes would be a waste of money.
After so many people didn’t sign up for choreo the owner said she’d reassess choreo in January.
Is anyone else crazy like me and signing up for kids activities?
Also our summer camp is doing registration for next year?!? They are expecting it to be full so if we don’t sign up our kids don’t get a spot. If it can’t run we get a full refund. I don’t even know if my kids will be in in-person school and camp wants my money?
At least if school is on line with reduced hours my kids will have their dance classes on line for focus, exercise and motivation. Hopefully everything can be in person. But camp seems over the top. They said they want the deposits to retain their staff.

All our school extra activities have been cancelled.. Sports/arts/band. Although I think band is still going but not in the traditional way.
We are not big into a ton of after school activities so that doesn't affect us. We are getting a puppy that will have to be walked twice a day so that will be our new exercise program. Much needed.

I think most of our school sponsored after school activities will be cancelled too. We haven’t heard yet.
I did get the co-curricular activity sign up for little dd(Gr 7). For sports and activities. We have to fill it out in August but were told they don’t know if anything will run.
I think schools should concentrate on academics but I feel bad for those deep in school sports. Our Canadian schools sports team aren’t as huge as the ones in the US though.
Older dd does model UN. I can’t see them having any conventions this year as they draw a hundred kids.

My daughter registered for dance as well. Just one class (competitive hip hop). Even though she will be super busy with university she still wanted to dance. Who knows what it’ll end up looking like...class size is limited to 10, and I don’t know if there will be any competitions.

Summer camp deposits for next year seems ridiculous. Dance class I get, she still has rent and bills for her building and the staff is working even if it is on Zoom. I have relative taking music classes online and they seem to be going great. I don’t understand why the summer camp needs deposits to maintain their staff for next year. I am no business person, but that makes no sense to me.

They also have to pay taxes on their property and maintain it. It’s a mess and they are currently relying on donations. Seriously, though, I’m not ready to commit to next summer and my kids don’t need another disappointment.

Your DD’s go to sleep away camp, yes? Didn’t they go this year? I would imagine that you need to put your name down now for next year and that they ask this every year? So that deposit makes sense—it’s just like any other year.
As for dance, I think you did the right thing. If you can afford it, I’d keep my kids as close to their normal schedule as possible. I’m really struggling with every day being the same, so I’d want that normalcy for my kids, in whatever way I can make it happen. But yes, I’d evaluate how many I would sign up to take.
I’m banking on the hope that there will be a vaccine by spring and that most people will have it by next summer. The pharmaceutical companies say they will be ready. I’m just praying that there will be an end to this mess.

Oh, since registration starts in October normally I guess that makes more sense, especially since you do get a full refund. It is obviously earlier, but not obscenely so. The summer camp with my program doesn’t start until March. We had just done our registration when the shut down happened.

afterschool sports have had sign-ups and try-outs this summer - that's a HELL no from me.
Girl Scouts is re-registering for the fall but a) that's the normal time-frame and b)there has been quite a lot of virtual activities locally and across the country. I did re-register DD13

The pandemic is definitely teaching resiliency).

Yes, I’ve registered my daughter for dance. I’m skeptical. The are limiting class size to 20 which is far too many in my opinion. I’m planning on keeping my kids home for the school year so sending her to a class with 20+ others seems silly. I can cancel up to the beginning of class if I choose.

Our studios are small. They had 12-18 kids per group last year. The groups were split in half so 8-10 kids. Unfortunately this required more teachers. Our fees went up 10%. She also put in that ventilation system which was $40,000. I think her landlord helped out. But the studios had no windows for ventilation. Now new air is coming in through the roof.

My kiddo is registered for dance. Her regular classes are good to go. They are limiting to 14 kids per class which is what the studio rooms will fit with lots of room to spare. Her performing company isn’t going to meet because all the places they do shows are closed to outside groups. She doesn’t know that yet and is going to be crushed. 😢
For competition, she is just doing a tap solo. No group or duo/trio. We’ve already had the “this might be a two year solo” conversation. Plus, we aren’t depending or feeling pressured by someone else if a decision about competition participation comes up.

My daughter is signed up to play club soccer which is $$$$$. The whole team just had to buy new uniforms too, and wanted to make sure and get their order in early so they were ready to go for all of the summer tournaments....which are all getting cancelled.
My DD is a rising freshman so club soccer games aren’t supposed to start until mid-November which is after the school season ends. School tryouts have already been pushed back and I believe a decision on whether the season will happen comes out this week sometime.

Fall sports registration is still happening at our schools here. There is a fall baseball/t-ball/softball sign up happening at one of our local parks. Our kids are already registered for fall hockey (rollover from spring hockey that got postponed). All with the caveat that they might not be happening due to coronavirus.

Another comp soccer mom here. I feel better about the chance of there being soccer due to it being outside, but I live in a county with the strictest Of guidelines so who knows. As of now, practices begins in August. Hoping to see some games in the fall.

In Québec, all our amateur/minor sports programs are run by municipalities. However, starting in Grade 7 you do have a choice of sending your child to a Sports-études public school, which is regular school with a choice of different sports programs (hockey, baseball, soccer, ski, etc.) that you pay for. My older son is enrolled in the hockey program ($$$$ because of ice time) and it’s supposed to be business as usual, with a lot of modifications. I would not have enrolled him this year, even though the school he goes to is far superior in academics to our local high school, but DH insisted and he really wants to go. My younger son is enrolled for the regular municipal hockey season. I have made it very clear that I will not be going into any hockey arena until covid has been beaten. I am willing to drop them off at the front door and that is it. I am 100% not happy about hockey (not a fan even in normal times) and will be relieved when/if it is all cancelled.

That’s my oldest—he would go kicking and fussing into something that we “forced” on him and within 30 minutes he would be all on board. I’m glad that it all worked out. I’m trying to be sympathetic to what my kids are going through, while pointing out the perks of the new way of things. But we all just want our old lives back.

I've seen a lot of registration sign up for various city sports.
My son just finished his summer high school baseball season & is already going to football workouts. Fall sports are being permitted by the state, but hopefully they learned a few lessons from the baseball/softball seasons. We didn't want to buy pricey cleats until we know for sure there's a good chance at a season (we bought used ones at Play it Again Sports) because I'm still not 100% convinced the season will happen.
We're still waiting to hear how music classes will work in the school district, but the marching band competitions have all been cancelled.

My kids’ dance studios have contacted us and I am ignoring them. One of them kept trying to open up for live classes when they were expressly closed by the governor’s orders, so I don’t trust them with safety at all.
