I don’t support anarchists, rioting, looting or burning. But I do support protesting. I think that Trump’s statements in June about how he would respond to protestors really ticked a lot of people off. Heck, when he has the protestors cleared in Washington DC so he could have his photo op I was ready to go protest as well. I don’t think the way this has been handled has been effective, and it definitely sounds like the feds are making it worse. Like my brother said...now people are protecting their city from Trump and the federal government. Who would have thought that would ever happen in the US? I really can’t believe that there isn’t more national news about this. But on one hand maybe it’s good since it would give trump the publicity that he wants? But I also wonder how many people know about this? How is it being covered on Fox? I think you got your answer about how it's being covered on Fox from the poster up above. You know who IS covering this? The BBC. So there you go. If I want accurate news about MY country, I have to get it from somewhere else. sunshine Have you been downtown during the protests? If you’re NOT from here and/or don’t have firsthand knowledge of the situation, you need to sit down. Is that harsh? Probably. I’m out of shits to give. 🤷♀️ This Portland girl is profoundly finished listening to the righteous indignation of people who are taking the news (from ANY SOURCE) as gospel. Walk downtown one night and just observe a peaceful protest. Too scared? Ask yourself why.

SAHM wannabe I watch CNN quite a bit but have only seen a tiny bit about Portland. They are focused on the pandemic in Florida and Texas. I wish they realized that they could cover more than one issue at a time.

I went ahead and followed (on Twitter) a bunch of Portland journalists who are on the ground there after I read the story on OPB.
Nothing says “states rights” and “small-government conservative” like sending federal border patrol officers into a city where they are not requested in order to snatch people off the street. The fact that I am seeing people who consider themselves conservative defend it tells me everything I need to know.

What is happening in Portland is terrifying. I am at a loss about what to do or how I can help. Obviously I can vote in November in the National election as well as support my local candidates who are running—like Mark Kelly for Senate from AZ—flip that seat to blue! What can I do to help now though? If things continue like this for several months...well, that’s just terrifying to me. Donate to campaigns directly or through aggregating sites like ActBlue - if you can. Volunteer to phone bank and/or help people get ballots or get to polls (though that's much harder w/covid now) - if you can.

@zingermack that is helpful for the election, but I am worried about what will happen if we have federal "police" in several cities within the next month.

Then we can try to emulate the strong folks (moms, dads and others) who've come out to support the peaceful protestors (not the paid or anarchist agitators). Those of us who can, should stand up with the peaceful protestors and bear witness to what is happening.

Well, I'm going to write the Congress people for my district and complain. Chad Wolf is an "acting" director, and he's assumed power that shouldn't be available to someone who has not been through Senate approval process. I'll have to look up his official title.
It's a start, to let Congress know they have to take SOME action to stop this.
ETA: Chad Wolf is the acting secretary of the Dept. of Homeland Security. Ken Cuccinelli is his acting deputy.

What is happening in Portland, and what Trump is threatening to do in other cities is the most terrifying thing he has done yet. I am really fearful of what is going to happen next. The mayor of Chicago is taking a tough stance, but I’m afraid Trump will just see that as a dare and he will act aggressively.

Positively horrifying. I was sick after the election results were reported in 2016, physically sick. I knew in my gut that this was going to be BAD. I had no idea how bad it would get in such a short time. System of "checks and balances" invisible.
Desperately want to help, donating to ACLU but who else can effectively use donations right now? I'm writing postcards (on behalf of N.C. NAACP) urging people to register now and vote Nov. 3.
Feeling largely hopeless and impotent.

Can Kate Brown do nothing about it, does anyone know? I am glad she is not my governor, because she seems like kind of a do nothing and wishy washy, but can she not step in and do something to have them removed? She has formally asked them to leave and they refused. It's in the courts now. I went ahead and followed (on Twitter) a bunch of Portland journalists who are on the ground there after I read the story on OPB. I have found Twitter to be the best source of information. Amazing videos of moms (in yellow with bike helmets), dads (orange with hard hats) and many others protesting together. The feds are drawing a bigger, more diverse crowd every night. Chad Wolf is the acting secretary of the Dept. of Homeland Security. Ken Cuccinelli is his acting deputy. I believe he has been in the position longer than an "acting" appointment is allowed. And putting people in an acting position is an end run around having to get Senate approval.

I am Portland adjacent, the protests are for the most part peaceful. There have been fires set, but it isn’t like there is looting and rioting and people running amuck. The violent incidents are not the norm, the damage is minimal and the people for the most part are peaceful. There have been numerous videos of people in military style gear taking people off the street and putting them in unmarked vans without identifying themselves or saying anything to the protestors to say why they are being removed, There was a contingent of moms out last night protecting the protestors. The police use of force is out of line for what they are encountering, there was one night the police had some sort of wand things that were shooting flames out of them towards the ground. The officers were just walking down the street in full riot gear waving them back and forth. There are tanks for who knows what purpose. There are reports of snipers on top of buildings. There is nothing like the CHOP situation in Seattle. I don’t believe sunshine is in this area based on other things she has posted. I do believe it is less about BLM and more about defunding the police though right now and that is disappointing to me. For anyone interested in seeing how the media is covering it here I suggest kptv.com. There news is not my favorite to watch, but they have the best online presence and easiest website to navigate. There is a current video from last night so you can get a glimpse of what the protesting looks like. I like Oregonlive.com as well but I think they may be pay after a certain number of articles or for full coverage. Sorry but did you mention fire? The police were seriously shooting flames towards the crowds? Even if it was towards the ground this seems like a very odd thing for the police to do. I've never even heard of this tactic. That kind of stuff can freak more people out. And snatching people off the streets?!?! WTF.

No, not at the crowd, as I said they were shooting the flames at the ground but they were walking down the street I don’t know the machines were, but they looked like golf clubs shooting fire out of the bottom. Let me see if I can find a link on a public Instagram account. My friend that posted it had it in her stories and she doesn’t save them. I am sure others had videos. I will post if I can find one.

Philly is listed. And I’ve told my DD that I NEED to know where she is when she is in the city so I know where to start if she disappears ( btw I was there yesterday and it was calm and quiet. Granted I was only in my car and stopped at an empty park to wait for some thing then we picked it up & left, but we drive thru a great deal of the city and saw no problems. There was nothing that needed an armed force, beyond the police that I saw. ( Philly police have done enough like leveling an entire city block in the 80’s I doubt they need federal help to create a disaster ) But yeah, Trump is threatening to send his gestapo to Philly I might need to add my DD to my credit card so she can bail people out, she can’t afford it. At least in that way I can try to help. I’m more afraid of her international friends ( here legally ) just vanishing and not even being able to find them. Bail won’t work then. I just cringe when I think of it. I’ve been freaking out since the DC bible/park incident. It sure has taken over my worries from the pandemic. I literally have nightmares about it.

I enjoyed this viewpoint of a local citizen, Daniel Pickens-Jones. Hopefully, this link will work so that you can see the photos. This pretty much sums up my experience, as an area resident (I'm in the 'burbs, but have been into Portland proper several times since this all began and besides some extra graffiti and a few boarded up windows, absolutely nothing was out of the norm).

Apparently this is something that's used to create a lot of smoke to disperse crowds; I don't know if there are chemical irritants in the smoke or it's just garden variety smoke. Either way, these things look intimidating af (and IMO are being wielded in a way to maximize that effect) and have no place being used against protests. The feds have also been using tear gas, though that's been forbidden in the city.

Let me bring special attention to this part of the thread: "Because we don't have that local support, that local law enforcement support, we are having to go out and proactively arrest individuals, and we need to do that because we need to hold them accountable." That's the acting DHS Secretary. PROACTIVE ARRESTS? What fresh hell is this?

Interesting that is what they are for. The force used is just insane isn’t it? The tear gas has been a huge problem according to my friend who has been down there. I don’t know why it is being allowed when it is illegal in so many situations.

I visited my elderly aunt today, here in my Portland suburb. It was all I could do to keep my mouth shut when she said how glad she was that Trump sent out the NG who fixed the rioting in Portland. Interesting spin whatever news she watched put on it, if she thinks things are better. MY daughter lives and works in Portland, and I know some of the protesters. They are idealistic, well educated young people who believe this is their chance to make a difference in this unfair world. DD, who is 37, just shakes her head and says she no longer thinks anything can change, and she’s too tired to join her friends and coworkers, but she brings them water and other things to help. You’re way nicer than I am. Both of my elderly aunts have died in the past year but I wouldn’t have hesitated to get in argument with either one of them over Trump. Well, one of them hated him anyway, and the other one voted for him, but we didn’t hear another word about him after his first few months in office. She shut right up about it. At least there’s that. My DD just turned 37, too. She’s still a flower child.

DD is a flower child, too, unfortunately a jaded one. I just drove through southern Oregon and some very Trump loving small towns. It was disheartening to me. And what’s with all the actual flags proudly flying from actual poles? Right under the us flag where the state flag is supposed to be? I’m 63. Never in my life have I seen such a thing. It’s a cult!!
