My nephews's school announced that they will be all virtual to start. I feel bad for my nephew who will be a senior- he loves marching band. Band camp just started this week and he was saying how good it was to get back to normal, and then this happens again... He seems to be taking it well, though. Michigan Competing Marching Band has canceled its entire 2020 season. We know a few band seniors this year and they are so bummed! Another job down the tubes - my son is a pace coach during marching season. Doesn't make a ton of money but he depended on it for cash to save for college. I hate everything about all of this.

My district is starting 100% online. Teachers have to go into their rooms to teach online. I know I'll be more productive doing that but the commute (35 min one way) to teach in an empty room sucks. My district is in one of the "top 3" areas in CA for infection/spread rate so we'll not be going back anytime soon. Similar boat here. We’re required to teach virtually from our empty classrooms. I am sure it is to have more accountability for some of our district teachers who didn’t do much during the March shutdowns. Ugh. I also have about a 40 minute commute, and it is frustrating to have to drive to an empty classroom, but I get it.

I haven’t heard of teaching from an empty classroom. It would certainly make some aspects of the job easier since we would have quick access to materials.
Teachers haven’t been allowed in our building since June when we retrieved student belongings and cleaned our rooms. At that time, entry/exit times were staggered and a limited number of staff were allowed in the building at the same time.
Our first day back to work for 2 1/2 weeks of training is a week from today. Our district will begin entirely online. This is in Las Vegas.

My district voted on Monday to start online. My union is in negotiations with the district bargaining team to come up with a plan. Given that it took them 704 days to negotiate our last contract (which was then voted down by the Board) I'm not hopeful something will work out. The union has voiced that they are not willing to send teachers back without a MOU. If one is not inplace, we will start the year on strike.

According to our band director, my state's decision was based more on the financial implications. If you have to socially distance on buses, it would take 3-5 buses to get a smaller sized band to the state competition. Add in the fact that they were likely not allowed to have spectators, or at least not as many, they couldn't count on ticket sales. It does suck a lot.

Just found out our school system is doing in person and online. I think we are the only school in the district doing in person. I think it may be due to living in DeVos/Trump territory.

I had not heard that! Thank you! It is expected that the schools in Snohomish County are going to call it for online learning this week. We shall see! I imagine Snohomish will be all online too. Our youngest just graduated. He'll be going to UW and all of his fall quarter classes are online.

Ours is doing in person with an online option where the student follows along at home to the same schedule as the rest of the class. Ours is a private school and they sent a survey. Parents and faculty all had input. We went from options of hybrid (2 days at school, 3 days at home) and jr/se high virtual with elementary spread throughout the school - to a final decision of “in person, there’s plenty of room for social distancing in the classrooms.” It makes me wonder how many students we are losing and how much tuition will increase. For high school the students will stay in the classroom and the teachers will come to them.

Well our governor basically kicked the can out to the individual districts so each can decide for themselves what to do based on the level of Covid in each area. While I understand the reasoning behind it, I feel it just adds another level of confusion in a way. We are supposed to get more guidance on Monday when the plans for the district are taken to the school board on Monday.
I’m not liking any of what I’m reading for the in person part of the hybrid option my district wants to start with. I really want to keep my kid home (which is also an option) but my DH disagrees and thinks she should go to school. She doesn’t want to go either and is stressed out about potentially getting Covid at school. Ugh. I really just don’t see the point when it’s all going to be a huge cluster**** and I’m going to be the one to get stuck dealing with all the fallout no matter what. She gets sick, I’m home with her. She has to to to the doctor, it’s me taking her. School is closed, I’m home with her. She gets stuck in a class with the girls that she can’t stand and who have bullied her for the last three years that she now can’t get away from even at lunch or recess? I get to deal with all of that crap too. The kid already hates school to begin with. Sigh.

Full disclosure: I homeschool for intellectual disabilities so it doesn’t affect me.
Our schools are going back full in person. The exact same district that thinks it’s safe to put hundreds of kids and adults into a building where masks are “recommended” is doing drive by supply pick up (for needy families) because it’s too dangerous to enter a building to pick up the supplies.
If my kid was still in public school, I’d be livid. It is very frustrating. I feel like my community thinks this is a hoax. We have one Walmart and you wouldn’t know there was a pandemic going on. I’m very fortunate that I can homeschool my child and keep my family at home most of the time.

Also regarding band: thank god my band kid graduated. The camp was last week and to solve the problem of social distancing, the director kept them outside the whole day (instead of the usual 2 hour drills) I drove by: those kids were not 6 feet apart outside.
I told my husband that the director is going to kill somebody some day. He’s restricted water breaks in the past and had kids get sick. It is not right at all. And now he’s not letting them inside at all under the guise of social distancing which isn’t happening.
He is not popular with the kids.

Yup...knew yet another change was going to happen before school had a chance to start...and it even happened before the end of the registration period today!
It was announced a month ago that K-8 would be 2 days in person & 3 virtual, while 9-12 would be 1 day in person & 4 virtual (if you didn't chose to go 100% virtual in the existing virtual school). Two weeks later the governor announced that they would be holding schools to the rule that 50% of instruction had to be in person. Thursday the governor updated that with terms for when schools go switch to 100% virtual (based on positive tests and student absences.)
But today, the superintendent basically said FU and announced we'd be going 100% virtual to start the school year. Positive cases are going up, but nothing like some of the other states so I'm a little surprised by the announcement. We have such a high number of families that qualify for free/reduced lunches that 75% of the schools (most likely more) just give every free lunches and breakfasts. I think I saw some report that said about 30% of families that had registered in July picked the 100% virtual option (the number of high schoolers choosing virtual equaled the enrollment of one of the bigger high schools!)
Still doesn't affect us much as DS was only going to have one or two classes in person. However, one of the classes is band so I'm not sure if that will still happen. Band camp starts Tuesday and Football camp starts Friday, but now I'm not so sure on either (ironic since the Athletic Director for our school just sent out an email about fall sports just hours before the announcement from the superintendent came out).

Our whole county (near Seattle) is starting 100% online. There are about 15 school districts and 150,000 students. I’m in Thurston county and that’s what we’ll be doing too.
