My Cricut Expression has been packed up since a move in 2012. I have 6 (unlinked) cartridges, one last iffy blade, and a half trashed mat. I mostly used it for titles/text in SCAL2 in MacOS - the dial was fiddly trying to get the exact size wanted.
SCAL2 won’t run on my iMac anymore. The libcutter option seems promising but the Expression is still on old firmware.
Are blades still available? Can I buy the new mats? Is it possible to keep this going if I can get SCAL2 working or am I wasting time?
I’m not in the market for a new cutter, but I’d like to figure out if the Expression can be used with the kids to finish some School of Life albums I started.

I have an Expression that I use once in a blue moon. The new mats and blades work fine in it; I had to buy some about six months ago and had no issues.

I still have the original Expressions, although I am phasing it out and only using my Silhouette now. It just gets too temperamental, but it does work. I also use SCAL, but with Win10. I did have to purchase a new cord/AC adapter a couple of years ago. The old was was leaky and sticky!
For getting SCAL to work on your Mac, contact the SCAL people, they helped me get it working for me on Win10.

I'm still using my Cricut Expression - I use it with SCAL though - while I have 2 or 3 cartridges, I've never actually cut with one. I've moved SCAL to my new Win10 computer recently and had no issues - I'm not familiar with Mac though. No problem using the current mats - I haven't bought new blades in a while but my understanding is they should be fine also.

I have 2 Expressions, they are workhorses. I use one all the time in my craft room and the other is a traveling one for crops, it lives in a bag, lol. Hasn't seen the light of day since December, poor thing. I have about 45 cartridges. Blades, mats all easily accessible from big box stores or online.
I never did do SCAL-I am still running a old version of Design Studio. I *think* you can also use Design Space, but I don't like to need to connect to the internet so I will just keep on keeping on until something happens lol and I am forced into a new machine. Do you by any weird chance have an old laptop? A friend of mine keeps an old laptop just for cutting with her older machine.

Thank you everyone! The new mats and blades work fine in it; I had to buy some about six months ago and had no issues. Excellent. I also use SCAL, but with Win10. I did have to purchase a new cord/AC adapter a couple of years ago. The old was was leaky and sticky! For getting SCAL to work on your Mac, contact the SCAL people, they helped me get it working for me on Win10. that’s concerning! I’ll check the cord carefully. I do remember someone’s house fire being started by a Cricut once! I checked, they aren’t supporting the newer MacOSes with SCAL2. And I have to figure out how to upgrade the firmware with someone's Windows machine to get the libcutter plugin to work. I never did do SCAL-I am still running a old version of Design Studio. I *think* you can also use Design Space, but I don't like to need to connect to the internet so I will just keep on keeping on until something happens lol and I am forced into a new machine. DesignStudio doesn't appear to be Mac compatible - some people use it in a Windows emulator, but I don't really want to buy emulator software AND Windows. Might as well buy a new cutter for that $$ Design Space dropped the Expression. I don’t have an old laptop, but I’ve considered getting one. I also have a Fujitsu scanner that isn’t supported in the new MacOS, and I have plenty of photos and genealogy items to scan still. Also using it a lot for remote work.
