I was ordering food from a nearby restaurant and tried going through GH. Got to checkout and the delivery fee, service fee, suggested tip and tax was over $20 on a $35 food order. Is this the typical add-on across food delivery platforms or does the amount fluctuate depending on the time of day? Also, do you always tip through the app or is it better to tip in person?

it is better to order directly from eating place, pick up yourself or call and see if they do self delivery. with grubhub, they lose much of their profit.

Those fees - as well as bad delivery people - are why we no longer use the delivery services. I call in an order (or do it online) and then we go pick it up. Sometimes a restaurant will have their own delivery people, but we have found that the food is hotter if we don't rely on Grubhub, etc.

My BFF has recently switched to Postmates from Doordash. She does the annual plan though - so I think that means service charges aren't billed. But you still have to pay a delivery fee and tip. But usually you can find restaurants that has no delivery fee, or a very low one.

The fees definitely add up. We were using Door Dash with decent success for most of the quarantine but the last time, the driver didn't deliver one of two items. It was a rack of ribs plate that was already close to $20 by itself so when I picked up the bag, I noticed it wasn't there right away. I managed to catch up with the driver and let him know. He said that is what the restaurant gave him and we would have to call the restaurant and they would remake and send someone else out. So we did but the restaurant said that they gave him the complete order and we would have to go through DD to get a refund and reorder if we wanted the ribs. We think the driver took the ribs.
After that experience, we are done with most food delivery services. We do have one local food delivery service that we've used for a couple of years with great success and will continue to use, they just don't have as many restaurants available.

The fees do add up. I always just change the tip to $3-5.
If you can, I would tip in cash — some people warrant more or less tip. But I never have cash on me.
The main reasons why I use the platforms instead of call directly is: - I find new restaurants this way - this is the only delivery service they have - Support for issue resolution. Like if they forget items.

I'm not sure if it is the same over all platforms, but the cost to get something delivered is the reason we backed away from these options and just order direct from the restaurant and pick up.
Sorry I'm not any help.

Like if they forget items. We usually do DoorDash or GrubHub because we too like finding new restaurants and it is the only delivery option for some of our favorite restaurants. I usually change the tip to $5-$10 too, especially if the restaurant is within 5 miles of the house - and because they calculate the tip based off of the total food + delivery and service charges. I don’t need to tip on delivery and service charges. I often can’t leave the house near dinner time because ds2 often melts down at that time of day, so curbside pickup is out. I love that DoorDash and GrubHub exist- they have been a lifesaver for me. We recently had an order go bad through GrubHub for California Pizza Kitchen. I ordered 2 Thai Crunch Salads - one each for dh and myself - and they only sent one. I called CPK, and they told me that they made a mistake, but that they only charged GrubHub for 1 salad. “That’s nice,” I replied, “but we paid GrubHub for two of them.” I made them send another salad and it ended up that GrubHub refunded the cost of that salad, even though I never contacted Grubhub. We split one salad for dinner and then had the one that finally arrived for lunch the next day.

We only do pick up. It eliminates an extra contact.

When you change the tip on the platform to $0 in order to tip in cash, does that result in delayed delivery/bad service due to someone not wanting to do that delivery because of no (anticipated) tip? Or are drivers assigned calls with no choice as to which ones to fulfill?

I have never actually seen the person who delivers my food to hand them a cash tip.

Most deliveries right now are contactless so use the app to tip. Plus i never have cash anyway, and i don't think the driver probably wants potentially dirty cash either right now.
I am not ever going to call and go pick up my food, the whole point of me using a service is so i don't have to leave my house and fight traffic. Traffic is the number one reason i use these services. This is the metro Atlanta area and there is never NOT traffic.

I've had a few mom and pop restaurant owners tell me they lose money when they deal with a delivery service, all while we pay more. I think more restaurants may now have their own drivers. My faves do.

I also can’t remember which, but at least one of the apps lets you choose cash as an option so it’s not just zero. I forgot about not tipping in cash because of contactless delivery since I don’t tip in cash normally. That’s a good point but I’d remember it for later. I wish you could add or adjust tip afterward. Because I’d def give some people more if they were great.

This is what happened to us at work. We ordered quite a few subs and their website defaults to GH delivery. This place is literally right down the block, it would take 5 minutes at the most to get here. Order never showed up, called restaurant and they said it was picked up. After an hour, called back, got the run around. Needless to say, we did not get our subs (there would have been about 15-20). Restaurant said we had to go through GH to get a refund. Would not re-do our order. In the end, we just disputed the credit card charge to avoid all that. A HUGE MESS and everyone was HANGRY!! **GH driver took a picture of the drop off - by a tree. We don't have a tree by us! And we have a open lobby.

The actual restaurants get less than 40% of the total good portions of bill so we always order directly from the restaurant.

Just want to add that though i only use Uber Eats, it's very easy to get a refund if something is missing or incorrect. In 2 years we've had to get refunds i think 5 times, for missing items or in the last case it was delivered but not to my house. There was a picture of the front door but it wasn't mine.
You simply request a refund through the app and it's done, no questions asked, no need to call the restaurant. I'm sure if you abused it they'd suspend you but i have had zero problems with UE as a company.
Also, I tip generously. And if you like you can give extra money to the restaurant itself (this is a newer feature), at least to the places I order from. If you can't tell I'm a big fan of UE since moving to metro ATL. 😀

I usually order food online or call it in and pick it up. So I'm not a lot of help, but we have favorite restaurants that aren't very far from us that we go to so driving there isn't too bad.

My DD (19 and in college) is an UberEats driver. She likes it! They do not show a tip, and if ppl do tip it shows up usually the next day. She is So careful about making sure the entire order is there before she leaves the restaurant. She is very concerned about making sure they get their food hot and fresh, and waits until they answer the door to hand them the food, unless they request she leaves it on the front step. She takes a picture of it.
