We just got a new toaster oven at Christmas, and it's already disgusting on the inside. DH likes to cook or reheat greasy things directly on the racks, and now the bottom and parts that can't be removed are already black and gross.
I was reading on some blog about cleaning the inside of a regular oven by setting a bowl of ammonia in there overnight, then in the morning everything will wipe off real easily. Would that work in a toaster oven? I have 2 small kids, and I don't want to poison myself or them either.
Any hints? Thanks kind peas!

If the inside is aluminum, ammonia will discolor/stain the metal. If you don't care about that, I don't think it would cause any toxic issues as long as you rinsed it all off very well.

I know you are not supposed to mix different cleansers, but I swear by my mixture of Ajax (or Comet) and windex. I make a paste, spread it all over my toaster oven, let it sit for a while, and then all that gunk comes right off. Very little elbow grease is needed. The Ajax powder must dissolve a lot, since it doesn't ever scratch the glass.

Easy off? That's what we use to clean our oven over here since they don't believe in self-cleaning ovens where I live...

Are we married to the same man? Every single time mine reheats a slice of pizza he just puts it in and we end up with melted cheese dripping. I had to replace the last one because melted cheese damaged part of the heating element.

I think you can use oven cleaner (easy off) as well. I was getting ready to replace my toaster oven because I could not get it clean after 10 years of use. I had my house professionally deep cleaned and was pleasantly surprised that she was able to get it looking like new- I'm pretty sure she used easy off.

I have used barkeepers friend on the inside of mine and it did a very good job.

I just tried Easy Off in my regular oven and I was incredibly UNimpressed. I just thought it did a crappy job. Hmmmm.... I'm thinking about the Barkeepers Friend. I really liked the idea of setting something in there, closing the door, then coming back later for a quick wipe. I hate scrubbing!

I don't have one but use the ammonia trick with the racks of my regular oven. Works beautifully. I'd try it with the toaster oven. What do you have to lose?

May I vent ?
Many husband has inadvertently caused 2 toaster oven fires because he insists upon melting cheese in there.
He finally stopped when one of them made me dial 911.
