I am interested in thrifting more of my supplies, and saw that some people had been successful with online auctions. I went to GoodWill's website, as I knew they had online bidding. The first auction was for these stickers: www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/992729306.99? For these? I wouldn't pay .50 at a garage sale. And the starting bid was 6.99? I know you won't want to give away all your thrifting secrets, but how does someone new get started with treasure hunting online? Thanks!

I don’t have any answers for you, but there’s absolutely no way I’d spend that on those stickers. I wouldn’t buy those anyway, but if I did, I wouldn’t spend more than a couple dollars at Hobby Lobby on sale.

Wow - I didn't know Goodwill had online auctions, but no way are those prices even remotely reasonable!

I think it's because the person pricing can't be an expert in the value of all the varied items they receive. That's why it's possible to score amazing finds for a steal while also laughing at the ridiculous prices they put on Target dollar spot items.
The stickers probably won't sell at this price, so they'll either lower the price when the auction ends and nobody bites or divert them in a store or the bins.

P.S. As for techniques, check daily and use a variety of general and specific key words. Again, the people listing don't always know what they have.
For instance, I once found a set of vintage Hazel Atlas state souvenir tumblers just by searching "Oregon". They didn't know they were Hazel Atlas or vintage or collectible. If I had searched those terms, I wouldn't have found them (and it kept others from finding them)!
The most important thing is to know the value of an item and how much you are willing to pay, including the price of shipping. For Shop Goodwill, I often focus on the auctions of only the stores in my area so that I can go pick up my items in person instead of paying high shipping prices.
Good luck!

I have found major deals on ebay. I must be doing it wrong-my ebay adventures have not been awesome. Stuff seems very expensive, and there don't seem to be the kind of "lot" auctions I was looking for. But I will keep at it!

Do you have a creative reuse store in your area? If you're ever in Portland, Oregon, you must go to SCRAP! They're having a vintage ephemera sidewalk sale tomorrow and I am so there! Here is a list of similar stores in other states. I'm not sure how Covid has affected them, but if you have one around you, it might be worth checking out. trashn2tees.blogspot.com/2014/11/FindACreativeReuseCenterLocationNearYou.html?m=1

Hunting online for scrapbooking supplies has not been very fruitful for me. That said, it's far from impossible. The key - much like searching in person - is to be persistent. You must check often. The best deals are snatched up quickly, usually with Buy It Now offers. Most of what you'll see listed is as you said - overpriced, and sitting because nobody wants to buy it. Be prepared to wait a long time with no results. Diversify your search areas - Facebook, craigslist/kijiji, local swap boards, online marketplaces, etc.
Based on what I've heard, Goodwill's online auctions are crap most of the time. Highly overpriced and overbrowsed as they only send stuff they think is valuable to the auction processing stream. You'll get much better odds in an actual thrift store or rummage sale, sadly that's not a good option right now for many folks.

I always shop on facebook marketplace. You can look in all areas and see if a person will ship to you. The other place is groups on facebook like Scrapbook Deals. You can buy and sell.

I've bought some things on Facebook, in groups I joined specifically for Creative Memories products. Not necessarily 'thrifty' but retired product I wanted but couldn't find anywhere else. I haven't found any great steals online; for great prices I've only ever gone to scrappy garage sales, estate sales that happened to have craft supplies, or by regularly shopping at thrift stores.

Casting a wide net is key, or was before the whole world fell apart.

The ones in smaller cities seem to have better prices. In Portland the prices are much higher then other thrift stores.

I find that Marketplace is great for getting local bargains, I haven't bought a lot but what i have managed to get I have been really happy with and happy with the sellers prices. I am also in a couple of destash groups on facebook and I have gotten some amazing bargains, some sell new stock and most sell de-stashed items, I am forever picking up older stamp sets for cheap.
I have not had much luck with thrift stores, I have a friend who seems to find great stuff, occasionaly I will find a stamp set or a punch for a good price but mostly it is really old and not my style and often times way over priced. Scrapbooking supplies are generally on the expensive side and I find that the people who are pricing stick on a sale figure that reflects that, however just because something was $40 20 years ago does not mean it is worth anything more than a few dollars today.

Scrap is open? If you see a chubby lady with curly brown hair it will probably be me! I will see what their hours are and see if I can’t swing by. I LOVE Scrap. It is but it's a little confusing as to whether they are still requiring appointments or if they have started walkup shoppping. The website doesn't have the information their email did, but they are extending shopping hours until 6 pm (instead of 4 pm) starting next week. One main shop survival adaptation is that shoppers must buy a $5 shopping card at the door to use for payment and anything unused is a donation. They will not accept cash. Are you on their mailing list? If not, you might want to join. They are having sidewalk sales every Friday from 10 am - 1pm. Today is Vintage Ephemera, 8/7 backstock and bulk items, 8/14 is scrapbooking, 8/21 is office and school supplies and 8/28 will be craft books, magazines and party supplies. I totally forgot that I have an appointment on the other side of town today during the bulk of the sidewalk sale. Rats. But if you see a mysterious masked woman with navy blue fingernails digging through ephemera, it might be me! Here are their shopping "Rules of Engagement" from the email: Walk Up and Shop! SCRAP PDX Walk Up Shopping Now Available Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm (doors close at 3:30pm) $5.00 pre-payment at the door can be a donation or credited towards your purchase at checkout. Plan your trip ahead of time - think about what items you want to expedite your trip and help others get in safely and on time. If you are sick, STAY HOME. No refunds and no credits for unused fee payment. Rules of Engagement MASKS required at all times (please bring your own). SANITIZE hands upon entry (hand sanitizing spray provided - please consider bringing gloves). Maintain PHYSICAL DISTANCING (minimum 6 feet). LIMITED merchandise handling - if curious about an item, please let us help you! We will also provide "rummage sticks" to limit handling. 1 HOUR appointment (including checkout time). CARD payments only. BAG your own purchases. NO public restrooms. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE, especially those that are not following health and safety guidelines.

I don't have great thrift stores in my area, so my "thrifting" is a compromise. I also don't have the patience to search unless I'm dying to find an out of stock, older item. Occasionally, I find items at Dollar Tree like rhinestone stickers, dot stickers that kind of resemble enamel dots, regular stickers, labels, and items in the seasonal section. I haven't had luck finding Project Life cards. This time of the year is great for storage solutions because of back to school supplies.
Two online stores I've bought from that are overstock or discounted is Cheap Scrapbook Stuff and Scrapbooking for less . I only shopped once at Cheap Scrapbook stuff. I got my order in a timely manner, but all of the 12x12 papers were bent. It didn't bother me much since I don't do many 12x12 pages. I did ask about this store and the reviews were positive. If you like Echo Park and American Crafts, Scrapbooking for less has a good selection. There's other brands too. They have frequent $1.00 sticker sheet sales and kit sales. I feel like their stuff is a bit newer than Cheap Scrapbook stuff if that matters. I'm not very picky.
I have bought cheap metal dies on Amazon that come from China. There's also Aliexpress. It's usually just your basic stacking dies.
If I had Tuesday Morning closer to me, I'd check that more often.

I did go to one in the Salt Lake city area and it was heavy on items that would be good for mixed media and junk journal kind of projects. I'd love to go to one with a better scrap selection. I even read on their website they weren't accepting anymore scrapbooking donation items because they had too many. I was bummed! I'd be sure of the type of selection before making a special trip. I did get some good deals.

Goodwills vary greatly. Each is under a local board that sets the rules. For instance, one nearby has no senior discount days, no sales ever. . Another close by but under a different governing board, has a particular tag color on sale each day, a senior discount, etc. you can tell which one I like.

Those Goodwill prices are awful. They sound a lot like the stores near me.
The only scrappy thrifting near me would be the tag sales by our local crop group, and once a year by the LSS.
Once in a great while I'll find a small stash while I'm yardsaling. Or there's Dollar Tree for stickers. Sadly, that's about it.
