I have a one year old bed that I am trying to sell. It's a hybrid Sealy Kelburn II (similar to tempurapedic) that I paid $1600 for a year ago. Too soft for me. I have it listed on Craigslist, Facebook, etc. for $900 OBO. Am I being unreasonable asking that price? What would you pay? I even have the receipt posted because it is so new.

It’s a used mattress.
It doesn’t matter how new it is or what you paid for it.
The price is going to have to be cheaper than what I could get almost any new mattress for in order for me to consider your used mattress. Why else would I risk bed bugs, bodily fluids, and germs?

I would have to be desperate to buy a used mattress and definitely wouldn't pay that price in my desperation.
(This comes from someone who sweats way too much at night and I wouldn't want anyone to have to deal with my old sweat.)

You'd probably be better off spreading the word via friends then trying to selling to a stranger. People on Craigslist in the market for a used mattress aren't willing/able to spend that much. People looking for a good quality mattress are willing to pay a bit more new.

I wouldn't pay that for a used mattress because I could spend that much and have a decent new one. Sorry.

I'm sure you're not selling anything nasty, but I'd have to be pretty short on cash to buy a used mattress that could have anything on it or in it and that means I wouldn't have $900 to spend.
I've seen odder things sell though, so it might work out for you.

Definitely over priced for a used mattress on Facebook/Craigslist (no matter how amazing it is).

Yes, you are asking too much. I would never buy a used mattress under any circumstance.. I would think that people who would buy a used mattress might not now due to covid.

For a mattress (which I personally would never buy used), I'd lit it for 20% of what I paid and I'd prepared to consider offers in the $75-$100 range. Quite frankly, I'd be entertaining offers to simply take it off my hands for free so I don't have to take it to the dump. Most donation places don't even take beds any more.

Sorry OP, I agree with the others. No way would I buy a used mattress. And certainly not for that much, when you can go buy a new mattress for less.

A price is too high if the item is not selling.

You might be better off seeing if there are any non-profits in the area - women’s shelters, group homes, halfway houses - that will take it as a donation. You could then take it as a tax deduction and get a larger tax credit than you will get in cash for the mattress itself.
I would never buy a used mattress. Not even when I was a starving grad student. You will be hard pressed to get more than $100 for it, if that.
I know that it stings, but that is why so many expensive mattress companies offer a 30 day trial period. Many people won’t spend that much on a mattress if they can’t return it if it doesn’t work.

A person buying a used mattress doesn't have the money to buy a new one. You can definitely get a new mattress for less than $900.
I'd drop it to 300 and allow them to deal it down even more

It is illegal to sell a used mattress in NC. Is it legal in your state?

I’m thinking that would be a hard sell (especially in the days of COVID). In my state, it is actually illegal to sell a used mattress, so it wouldn’t matter how little you price it for.

The only used mattress I would buy is if I needed one for someone staying with me in the short term. I would never pay close to $900. Maybe $200?
Mattresses are notoriously over priced, when I bought a new one 2 years ago after my back surgery I looked at a lot of stuff online and basically I learnt that you should be able to haggle down a brand new mattress to close to half the ticketed price...which proved to be true. The mattress I wanted was $2600 and I managed to wrangle that mattress and delivery and removal of the old mattress all for $1600
Therefore if I had $900 to spend I'd go and haggle to get a brand new one for that amount rather than buy a used one.

I think so. Regardless of the brand, it's still a used mattress.

In my experience, people shopping for a used mattress are not looking for a deal on an used expensive bed, but are desperate for something to sleep on that is cheap. $900 is what I paid for my last mattress, on sale. I would just list it for best offer and find out if you can donate it anywhere if it doesn't sell.

Sorry, but I don't think anyone who is willing to pay $900 for a mattress is going to buy a used one.
Mattresses are like bras - if you're buying them used, it's because that's all you can afford.

Short answer is yes.
I personally would never look to buy a mattress off Craigslist in the first place.
I think your best bet is to sell it to someone you know but not for $900.00 bucks

Sorry, I don't think you'll be able to sell it. I've gotten rid of 2 hardly used mattresses in the last couple years. We moved and didn't have the need for guest beds anymore. I had a king and full size mattress priced at $100 and $50. I ended up giving them away and even had a hard time with that. The king went to a stranger on facebook marketplace. The full went to a charity.

I would never pay the amount you are asking for a used mattress.

You could then take it as a tax deduction and get a larger tax credit than you will get in cash for the mattress itself. The problem with that is with the higher standard deduction, a lot more people aren't able to write off charitable deductions. OP, while I agree with everyone else, when I was in college and newly working, I lived in furnished apartments and didn't think twice about sleeping on the mattress. And most of us think nothing of sleeping on hotel mattresses. But I still wouldn't buy a used one.

We have a rule with used furniture in our house - all mattresses, relaxing/lounge/recliner chairs and couches must be new. My husband and I saw too many things in our young adult years when most of what we bought was second hand that we just don't want the hassle. Unfortunately, many people would never pay $900 for a used mattress. If one of your kids, guest room or family member could use it I would go that route - or - try to find a way to make the bed harder to your preference.
