Not all of Australia, just Victoria at this stage. We've been under "state of emergency" and now we've progressed to "state of disaster"
Effective from 6pm tonight - and there's now a curfew between 8pm and 5am: - people are only allowed to go within 5km of their home - only one person allowed to do essential shopping once per day - allowed to exercise within 5km of home for max 1hr only once per day - no people allowed in your home apart from those who live there - from Wed all schools closed again - no public gatherings greater than 2 people - NO weddings allowed after Wed - funerals 10 people only - all sports/playgrounds/arenas etc closed
They are also freeing up police to be out and patrolling to stop people to determine why they are out - they haven't announced the fines yet, but speculated to be $10,000. The main driver for this is our numbers are still 600-700 every day and there are hundreds of cases where they are unable to find how/where people got infected.
It's going to be an interesting 6 weeks!

I have been talking to my family in Melbourne today about this. My dad - who should know better as he is a high risk 83YO - is up in arms, talking about 'dictator Dan' and the like. I did tell him that we had put up with most of that (we didn't have curfews) for 3 months earlier this year and that he needed to behave and not risk dying, especially as I couldn't come home for his funeral. My son, who does lean a little lefter than dad politically, is resigned to the fact that this is what is needed, especially as people have not been obeying the restrictions that have applied up until now.
I hope this gets things under control quickly. I worry for my dad, my son who has some medical risk issues and my niece who is a nurse.

Other than the curfew, that's pretty much what we had in lockdown. We did it then, but I can see a lot of people rebelling if it was called for again. Boris spoke one thing truly - we only get one chance at lockdown so we need to get it right. pjaye And is everyone back to working from home again except key workers?

is up in arms, talking about 'dictator Dan' and the like. I have to say I've been quite impressed with Dan & his leadership. This is at the brink of spiraling out of control, a month ago we had 20 people in hospital, now we have 385, we had 2 people in ICU now we have 38...and we also have 650 positive healthcare workers and 3 of the people in ICU are doctors. If he doesn't do something to nip this in the bud now and these numbers continue for another couple of months then the healthcare system will collapse. Thanks! I've already been locked down for the last few days waiting for my test result.. A colleague went to a drive through testing site and had her results in 18hrs (she got a text at midnight!), but the closest place to me was a doctor's surgery...and they are closed today (sun) so I'm assuming they'll start ringing people on Mon morning with their results.

Stay safe!
I wish the US would go on a real lockdown. Our government's attitude has just turned into, "A thousand dead a day? No biggie!"
We're dropping like flies, our testing result turnaround is two weeks, our economy is in the shitter, and our president is corrupt.
But let's send the kids to school! /s

Because I was curious I looked up the population of Victoria (6.3 million) in comparison to my state (Michigan, nearly 10million) because our daily case numbers are similar. Victoria is similar in size to Missouri or Indiana for comparison.

I thought Boris was back peddling on his easing of restrictions? Yeah, stuff that was going to happen, like the opening of some places and larger weddings have been reined in again I believe. The English girlies will confirm. There are places in England where things have been tightened again because of spiking. The north of England is experiencing problems and Liverpool are bringing in their own restrictions. What you are doing sounds pretty much like here, as RedSquirrelUK said. Now we (Scotland we) are reopening we are dealing with the idiots who refuse to wear masks. I want to grab some people by the scruff of the neck and shout shut up! Put up! Get on with it! Good luck with your result and as things progress.

A family of selfish idiots were on the beach yesterday and told a beach inspector they were on a day trip from Leicester. He called the Police as Leicester is on lockdown. Thanks for driving across the country to spread goodness only know what to our little town.

And they still believe this is all rooted in the actions of the security guards at the quarantine hotel?
I’ve been following the Australian cases in the news... shocking. And illlustrares how important distancing and isolation really are in keeping this disease under control!
I hope you’re doing ok... I can’t imagine the burden health care providers are facing.

Personally I think it's better to open up slowly and steadily than to have to close up again. People with symptoms are now having to quarantine for 10 days instead of 7. The mask problem is the same here in the south west. Masks are distressing my breathing badly. I'm getting through far too much of my blue inhaler because of them, and my chest is so tight, but it has to be done. This isn't about me, it's about everybody else. pjaye I'm thankful for you in Australia that your numbers have been so low until you have tests available, unlike us. Right the way through our first wave, testing was only available to hospital inpatients, not the vast majority struggling at home. But you can test and know exactly where the hotspots are and open/close as necessary - that is so much more effective. I hope people are sensible and nip it in the bud quickly.

True, the population numbers aren't comparable, but I can desire for our federal government to even care about its citizens and residents. Trump would joyfully watch kids die enmass, broadcast it on Fox News or OAN, as long as he could slap his name on something and shovel taxpayer money into his coffers.

Please don't take a risk with your own health though. There you are, taking as much care as you can and it feels like half the entire town here is now, suddenly, asthmatic. That's mainly the excuse they give when coming into the shop not wearing a face covering. As the mother and wife of asthmatics and DH having lost a cousin to it, they are lying to the wrong person. Or the shop worker who is amazed I expect her to wear a mask in my shop even though her parents expect their customers to wear one in their shop. Or the lady I've been serving for over a decade, now coming in and making a great show of struggling for breath, which she has never done in the past and claiming she is exempt as she can't breathe. Funny how, after buying her cigarettes, she stands chatting with her breath back to normal within a sentence. People are so selfish, it infuriates me.

Wow. I am just amazed. I love it. It is things like this that stop COVID in its tracks. I just cannot see it happening here in the US, unfortunately. People are all about how their own rights trump (hah) everyone else's.

Funny how, after buying her cigarettes, she stands chatting with her breath back to normal within a sentence. People are so selfish, it infuriates me. I know, for some people it's all ME ME ME - they have no social conscience, do they? 2 of my colleagues are asthmatics too. One is like me and quietly struggles on. The other makes a big fuss about not wearing a mask because she isn't prepared to risk an asthma attack, even though she is fine at the moment. I do respect that, even if I feel a little resentful. Nobody knows what other people are going through. We're all in this together, although sometimes you can't help feeling like the one kid in the school group project who did all the work so that the whole group got a high mark, while the others were out playing with their friends.

RedSquirrelUK are you still struggling from when you were sick back in April of so? Hope you feel better soon soon soon. In March, yes. We have identified 2 different problems that were each making the other worse - no wonder the doctors weren't getting to the bottom of it. But I had my first face-to-face appointment last week, with the respiratory nurse. The doctors had said I could stop the steroid inhaler without weaning but I tried twice and got into trouble. The nurse, far from stopping it, diagnosed me with asthma and increased the dose. I've felt so much better since, although I'm still having good days and not so good days. If the increase helped, which it has, she wants to move me to a combined steroid/long acting bronchodilator. I'm just so thankful we're getting somewhere! Thank you, sweet pea!

I can see the benefit and necessity of most of the measures. However, I would be vehemently opposed to restricting movement using police force. Even in the best of circumstances.
Of course we are in the worst of circumstances in the US. Our president is a racist, senile, wannabe dictator.
I’m just curious, who decides what the restrictions are and when they end?

I continue to be struck by the staggering differences in the response to this virus.
Just my county, which isn’t the biggest county in my state, has averaged 548 new cases a day for the past two weeks. There are counties with much higher daily averages.
Not only are we not shutting down, we are being forced to open schools for face to face learning.
