What are under represented themes in scrapbook lines?
I really would like more school lines for older students. A lot of the school lines are for little kids. Pinkfresh is one of the only ones I can think of that works well for teens. I can use non-themed paper but I like to have a diecut or sticker that fits with the theme.
I also think that there aren't many baby scrapbook lines anymore. Maybe it is because scrapbooking is a hobby mainly done by older people now? I know Doodlebug just released a new line but I was looking for other stuff and the pickings were pretty slim. Again, I can use non-themed paper, and do, but I like for something in my embellishment clusters to be on theme.
I know someone else mentioned the lack of hockey supplies.
What other themes are under represented?

I haven't seen any grandparent things. It is all grandma or grandpa but not grandparents. Same with parents vs mom/dad.

I'll agree on older age school stuff - middle school, high school, college - and let's add in virtual learning please
I would like to see more at-home activities - baking, knitting, sewing, family games, family movies, DIY, reading, gardening, chores (but not gender/age/person specific)
Travel stuff that focuses less on words (I'm tired of adventure, wander, etc...) and air travel/cruise and more on museums, state/national parks, staycations, scenery
I would love to see some decades stuff again - colours and patterns, not just the iconic 50s poodle skirt - but collections that would work for scrapping older photos

There is some, but not much. Could use more of these themes.....
Class Reunions
Going out and about.....lunch, dinner, dessert, shopping, errands, etc...
Gym, fitness, working out, walking
Photo booth photos, silly photos, shenanigans
Backyard fun: Fire pit, smores, hanging out, yard games, drinks, good conversation, etc...
Words and sayings (that are bigger, at least two+ inches tall). Tiny little words and sayings end up looking like sticker sneeze. Girls night out, lunch date, shopping, walking, hanging out with friends, chores, checking this off the bucket list, etc...

Especially for this year. Also, since we're asking for what we want, how hard is it to throw an "s" onto words to make "sisters," "friends," "girls." If I don't need to pluralize it, I can take the "s" off. But if I want it in the plural, and the "s" isn't there, I can't use your word. And that makes me sad.

Not really themes, but maybe a different take on them?
Like dog paper that isn’t masculine colors. It drives me crazy that pictures where I could actually use pink, there is none. Why are cat papers pastel & pink but dog papers are primary or more masculine?
Outdoors collections that have fewer tents/ campers. Would love to see more hiking and other outdoor activities. Or something for National Parks.
Also, lake/ water collections that are less focused on fishing. We do lots of other water activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing etc. I don’t need something specific for them, but I can’t really use fishing stuff.
Travel themed stuff for historical sites like DC, Williamsburg, Gettysburg etc. or museums, less planes & suitcases.
Agree on more home stuff, especially this year. Would love to see puzzles, game night etc,
And sports stuff that’s more generic, about being on a team, practice etc. My boys all play non traditional ones like tennis, rugby, ultimate frisbee, track & cross country. I don’t expect those specific ones but something generic that could be used for lots of different sports would be great.
Yes please on older school stuff, especially college.

I don’t know, life in general. Especially grown up life.
Daily life Fashion Make up But not little girl fake pink make up stuff I need modern words & stuff to go for this ( I swear I want to start taking a pic of my DD’s make every day she’s damn good at it. ) And since we are where we are in 2020 how about we modernize recipe stuff to document all of this culinary learning. I guess we need more bread?
I’d like more brewery/distillery/winery stuff not that we can go during Covid but the craft distilleries are really taking off
Music, but not 80’s geez why is it always 80’s themed

What's under-represented? Anything non-American! No football, no rugby, no cricket, no netball, not a lot of summer Christmas kits, school years not named correctly for Australia / UK / NZ, lots of mis-spelled words . I was pleasantly surprised to find a digital kit recently where they offered non-American spelling of Mum, and another school related kit where they offered Prep, Year 1, Year 12 instead of Kinder, 1st Grade, 12th Grade etc.

Yes to:
Adult birthday lines
Virtual learning
Bigger phrases, instead of sticker sneeze size
Adult geared museum visiting related stuff. I visit(ed) art museums, science museums, funky little galleries. There's stuff for kids visiting these places, but adults go too.
Phrases like:
Best Part of My Day
A Happy Day
In The News
My Day
I would love to see gaming stuff for handheld systems. 3DS & Switch. There's lots of stuff for Xbox & PlayStation controllers, but not for handheld.

100% agree with LavenderLayoutLady adult museum/gallery trips would be great. I'd also love some different workout/outdoor options. I hate to camp but walk every day. I'd love to see a work theme that's for those of us that are in an office. Pink Fresh had a cute work collection a while back, but a lot of it was geared towards entrepreneurs. Foodie themed collection & beer/brewery is also at the top of my list. A home collection that is more about remodel/cleaning out/buying a new home type thing. A non-cutesy wedding line. A mediation/spiritual line.

I have so much stuff in here, it is hard to think that anything is "missing". If it is, maybe it is in here! BTW I still have alot of baby themed stuff, both boy and girl...
I agree about a school/college themed collection more geared to older kids/young adults. I am really tired of the little red schoolhouse icon. Those were not even around when I was a kid--and that is a long long time ago...
I also would like some LESS themed stuff, if that makes sense. Just dots and stripes, leafy and blended colour backgrounds that I can put my photos on without their being lost....
And PLEASE modernize the grandparents! MY grampa had a mustache and a pipe when I was a kid--but again, that was a LOOONNNGGG time ago!

Orchestra. There was a band line recently, but so far not an orchestra one... paper with the instrument name on it is not enough. A piano line all it's own would be fantastic!
Music in general besides cassette tapes. All the types of music...
My kids do cross country, track and bowling. Something more creative just the track across the paper or shoes would be great. There is also shot put, high jump, long jump, pole vault, discus, javelin... Bowling paper that is not retro!
A pet line that is not cat and dog oriented.
A school line with 'last day of school' on it to go with the million 'first day of school' stuff. I do first and last day comparison photos so I need both in one line. Also I volunteer at my kids school, what about an adult school volunteer line? Middle and high school oriented papers too, that's seven years of their twelve years in school so over half of their time in school is not elementary!
More book/reading/library theme please.
I am sure there are more I'm not thinking of at the moment.
ETA: a MY birthday line. So not happy birthday to YOU because I'd like to scrap MY own birthdays... also a neutral birthday line not pink or blue.

Young male themes that aren't filled with 80's stuff in them. Really I'd like to see less pink and flowery anything. I am also done with the stacks of paper that are filled with random icons.
But that's me and I know that stuff sells.

Maybe they just went for mainstreamed(ish) lines until they could build a bigger base. Hopefully they will do that.

Kaisercraft has that one line that has Australian plants and animals. The wood shapes were so cute but I didn't know what to do with them except zoo photos. I love the cockatoos and the beautiful flowers we don't have in the US. I think Kaisercraft and Cocoa Vanilla need to put out more Australian specific lines. I don't understand why there aren't more warm weather Christmas lines. Besides Australia there are lots of parts of the US that don't have snowy Christmases. There is a line out that has National Parks on it but it is all photorealistic so I think it would be hard to use that paper. Yes to beer! I think I've bought every piece of beer paper that exists in multiples. There was a fairly new drink line, I think by Reminisce, that was really cute. It had all kinds of drinks on it. Sports lines that don't emphasize "champs" and "no. 1". My nephew loves sports but he is never going to be the best player on the team. Not every kid/team is the best. Yes to music, all kinds. I have a nephew that is a marching band dude (except not this year ) and one who is an electric guitar player. I use up every little bit of music paper I can get my hands on. Reminisce has a new rock one and Wild Whisper has a rock one that I've used. But there are so many types of music and the music choices need to be expanded more. I've complained about cat lines on here before. I do not have "pink personality" cats. I have a black cat and sometimes I can use a Halloween paper for her, but the other one is a Tuxedo and he is definitely not a pink dude. Basic Grey had a pet line a long time ago that was just beautiful and I'm hoarding and using every little piece of it. Yes to city life papers. I think Shimelle's Sparkle City was the best city line to come out in a while. Kelly Purkey had a city line (Basic Grey?) from a long, long, time ago and I can't think of much that was released between those two lines. Again, I don't need a lot of heavily themed stuff but it is nice to have something related to the theme in my embellishment clusters, or on one of the papers. Basic Grey used to be really good about releasing lines that were non-themed, just beautiful color combinations. Now how do you get scrapbook companies to read our requests?

Yes to city life papers. I think Shimelle's Sparkle City was the best city line to come out in a while. Kelly Purkey had a city line (Basic Grey?) from a long, long, time ago and I can't think of much that was released between those two lines. While I liked some elements from Sparkle City, most of it was quite the city fantasy rather than reality. I loved the pigeons and junk food icons but was stuck on how to use the majority of the papers. Second City by Kelly Purkey for Basic Grey was amazing. I used every bit of it. Oh, that purple... I just need someone to tie it altogether and use icons and sentiments that actually reflect city life. City dwellers use the city as their playground, garden, entertainment centre, extended dining room, etc. A lot of "regular" home life is exported to other places all around. This is what I'm yearning to find in a city collection.

This is a great question and makes me really think. I am from east coast USA, but I think non snow holiday lines for our southern hemisphere scrappers. Now I think some designers from south of the equator could offer a lot with that demographic. Even many areas of the US never see snow. I live in the mid Atlantic and we have some winters with no snow.
Now over all the years/decades I've been scrapping there has been very little if anything I haven't seen by someone. Scrappin' Sports used to do all the sports - rugby, cricket, Futbol,... There are some more 'obscure' for lack of a better term, subjects like male dancers for example - most ballet and dance is geared toward women/girls. I think when these lines come out there can be some effort to make the subject suitable for all genders somehow.
For the most part the themes that do come out must stop with A+, star student, Home Run, Touchdown, Best anything, Grandma baking and knitting and Grandpa golfing, dad cutting the lawn and grilling, etc.
I love themes and almost can't scrap without them. I'm not unhappy with any theme because I can usually make it work. But I do think the lines need to step into 2020 and stop with tired cliche stereotypes.

myboysnme I completely agree that manufacturers need to stop with the stereotypes. They are nearly unuseable for me. My kids' grandma isn't a big baker, never knit, doesn't wear an apron or vacuum in pearls. Their grandpa doesn't wear a tie, golf, or fish. For that matter, my boys aren't "rough tough stuff," don't skateboard, & aren't into 80's mixtapes on cassettes.

Know what I was just thinking?
The VANS shoe/sneaker is very represented in masculine lines, usually along with skateboarding. What about more athletic sneakers, like basketball sneakers? I know a lot more sneakerheads and people who collect kicks than I do skaters.

The Vans checkered shoes are absolutely ubiquitous where I live. I bet half of my students wear them and one of my nephews has a pair. I was really excited when Bro & Co. included them. Converse shoes are also represented a lot. I think maybe there aren't other sneakers because it is hard to represent them without copying an actual shoe? I know they need to avoid trademarked items. I think that is the reason that video game controllers look more like x-box type ones than handheld ones. There are a lot of generic brands of game controllers but a Switch controller is obviously a Switch.
I always think it is interesting to see Disney lines work around this problem. Simple Stories always has a "Disney" line but they have to do it without using trademarked images. Disney is incredibly sue-happy when it comes to their trademarks. Do you notice how "Disney" lines only use one ear? The two ear hat is copyrighted.
Mp3s have become a problem as far as icons, too. It is easy to draw a cassette or a record, but how do you represent an mp3? Bro & Co did have a pair of earpods included, which at least is a newer technology.
The grandma and grandpa images are definitely outdated, but again, how do you represent more modern grandparents? My mom actually did bake a lot of cookies with my nephews, so at least some of the grandma images work for me.
I agree about needing more city stuff. The pigeons in Shimelle's line were really cute, but we need more restaurants, museums, high rises, buses, etc. Shimelle had that one line (Field Trip?) that worked well for museums. Cripes, why did they get rid of Shimelle? Her lines really fit with my scrapping.
I think everyone here has such good ideas. I know scrapbook companies have to pick themes that they can sell large quantities of, but I do wish they would listen to their customers more. I think there are some unexplored themes that would sell really well.

myboysnme Reminded me of my biggest peeve with school lines - the whole tired “A+ student” trope. Nerd, teachers pet, bookworm, etc. I have two kids with learning disabilities, on IEPs, frequent flyers in RSP, Speech Therapy, etc. I’d love a school theme with sentiments like “hardest worker”, “making progress”, or words along those lines. Some sort of nod to the extended support staff that have been instrumental in my kids’ school success - TA’s, therapists, etc. The journey through school for my two unconventional learners has been the most emotionally challenging, and it would be so helpful to have product that help support this stuff. Ditto that to Autism. Some incredible lines to celebrate nuerodiversity would probably make me cry. My kid is not represented by primary colored puzzle pieces.

Definitely older kids stuff--school and just doing activities in general (clubs, accomplishments, goals, volunteering, helping out, so busy, stress relief, learning to drive). Not about how great everything is, #1, my BFFs, and those way over-the-top gendered colors.
I love that Second City line you posted, as well as Mon Ami. I consider those to be gender neutral colors too--you can use lovely color blends and both genders can use it. Like Basic Grey did! Gender neutral doesn't mean primary colors.
The stereotyping is so terrible in scrapbooking. I have to work to make sure my pages DON'T look like that, which means only using a little of some of these lines at a time and mixing in more modern elements. Why can't they just be more modern and less cliched to begin with?

Why can't they just be more modern and less cliched to begin with? I have a friend who has sold kits for years. People ask her for very specific things. I think people see a phrase, icon or a paper and think THAT would be perfect for my set of pictures. When many people scrap, they want the thing that screams this works for this set of pictures. That is the kit they purchase. The generic kits that are less specific stay in their inventory for a lot longer. Perhaps as seasoned scrappers (like many of us on here), we tend to want something different because we've all done the cliche pages over and over.
