I need to know. Is the priest a pedophile? When I was a kid, I kind of remember my mom watching this mini-series on TV. I knew it was about a priest falling in love. So I got a digital copy from the library and I'm reading it... and basically this is a young girl he's infatuated with! She's about 15 now (she just got her period and is figuring that out with him ) but she was younger than 15 when she met him and he was about 28 when the story began!! I just finished the Jeff Epstein documentary, so I feel like I am on high alert. Can someone please tell me that this isn't what I think it is?

It's been decades since I tried to read it but I hated it. I read about 2/3 and finally tossed it. I really can't remember much about it but remember that I couldn't stand the priest.

I haven’t read it in many years, but I loved the book, and am dismayed to consider this. My first reaction was surely not, even if he is a priest . But then I recalled another book written by Colleen McCullough called Tim, where an older woman falls in love and has an affair with a handsome, virile young man called Tim. The issue is that Tim has learning difficulties, and although he is 24, he has a mental age of about 8...

Whew! that'a a book I haven't thought about in a while. I remember reading it before the mini-series came out when I was in high school. My mom read it, thought I would like it and pass it to me. Take this from someone who hasn't read the book for 35+ years, but I'm going to say no he wasn't a pedophile because I can't imagine my very strict baptist mother letting me read a book about a pedophile. IIRC he was VERY taken with her but didn't act on those feelings and kept them to himself (and Barbara Stanwyck). I may have to put this on my re-read list.
ETA: I love those epic books that span generations.

Kind of? Nothing happens until she’s older but it’s clear they had a weird relationship from the beginning.
It’s not illegal but it’s highly questionable. Like a teacher who marries their student years later.

I think it's really borderline, but skating right on the edge of that line. Definitely a creepy relationship given that she's very young when they first meet.

I quit reading it because I thought it was a creepy relationship. I was well over half done with it and couldn't keep going.

Kind of like when you watch the Goonies and they use language that now would be bleeped out. LOL I'm going to stick with it a little more. The AUNT seems to realize he's got an eye for this girl and resents it because she has an eye for him , so I am waiting for her to take her vengeance out on him... she seems like a real dick.

Wow, that's a blast from the past. I loved that book 35 years ago! I'd agree with pancakes that it's definitely a creepy and weird relationship, but I don't think he's a pedophile. It's so interesting how time and new awareness changes the way we look at beloved old books, movies, and other media.

pedophile - I'm not sure - I think she was an adult by the time the relationship evolved but it's definitely inappropriate in many ways and I think one could argue he groomed her as a child intentionally or not by giving her love and attention she was lacking.
I read several of McCullough's books as a teen and I wouldn't want my girls reading them to be honest. (however I wouldn't stop them - I would discuss my concerns about the books with them)

Maggie was 10 and Ralph was 28 when they met. They first kissed after her brother and Dad died in the fire and she was 16 or 17. She initiated it and Ralph kissed her back but then stopped it. They had sex when she was married and 25 or so. They way he described her as "the perfect rose" was off, but then so was the whole relationship.
I really love the book but it ridiculous he couldn't figure out that Dane was his. Use math dumb ass, you had sex for a month straight with no protection.
How about another blast from the 80s past: Lace....which one of you bitches is my mother?!?!

I remember loving the book when I was young and feeling a bit meh about the miniseries, but when I rewatched it a couple years ago with my daughter, she was totally grossed out. I think she was 19 or so. Maybe it was the casting? And I had to rethink why I ever liked it to begin with.

So weird...y’all are like FB getting in my head! I seriously just thought about this series over the weekend when we turned on Thorn Rd. I thought it said thorn bird, then the whole word association thing happened in my head.
I loved that that series but then again I had a secret crush on our priest. I still adore him.

The term pedophile actually applies to men who prefer sex with PRE-pubescent children. Not adolescents. A couple of generations ago, girls as young as 14 could get married in some states. The Thornbirds is set in that time frame. It may feel icky but it’s not pedophilia, and I feel icky when you people throw that term around so freely. (Because I prefer to use language properly, not because I approve of teens having sex with grown men.) And I too fondly remember “which one of you bitches is my mother?”

Technically the term paedophile might not be correct, but he had a clearly inappropriate relationship and sexual attraction to a young girl, and as a Priest that's yet another level of inappropriate. (The correct term is hebephile, but that hardly gets used) When I helped a friend move house a couple of years ago and we were going through her bookshelf, she had a copy of The Thorn Birds, I did actually say "you're not keeping this...the creepy paedophile priest is going in the bin!"

I remember people making a big deal about the guy who was casted as the priest (Richard Chamberlain) - I didn't think he was anything special, but if they were looking for a creepy teenager-grooming priest, they nailed it. blech. I got to the part last night where the aunt passed and left him the fortune and I am just LIVID that he would take that from the family. I just hate this guy. Why the hell does Meggie love him so??? Kind of reminds me of Island of the Blue Lagoon icky feelings of Brooke Shields and the blond kid she was on the island with...

I never read it but I watched the mini series back then and my 19ish old self was very uncomfortable with that relationship. I remember someone had taped it for me and I fast forwarded a lot of those scenes because I found it ikky.
That being said it got so much better once she grew up, I absolutely loved it. I hate to think about it now and would rather remember it as romantic as I thought it was back then.

I think Meggie loves him because he gives her the adoration and attention her parents did not. And then the whole family is conditioned to believe anything a priest/the Church does is right, so they don't protest the aunt's will the way they should.

What was another book that was steamy around 1978/79 and was very popular. I can't remember the name of it. I had to hide those books from my parents!

Along those lines--I could never stand The Lemony Snicket books. The came out after right after we learned a pedophile had abused my niece.
When I read those books I just cringed.....old guy trying to get young girl to marry him. I was a bit miffed that I had to order for the library as all the kids were clamoring for them and would have chased me out of the library if I had not ordered them.

So my answer to the pedophile question would be 'no' in my opinion. I do remember loving the book when I snuck it into my bookbag without my mom knowing (hey, I was, like, 13??) and the miniseries... 1980s Richard Chamberlain- <swoon!> I agree that he was a dumbass, too! Lace... lol! I *loved* all of those books and miniseries back then... is Lace the one that had a sultan in?!? lol!!
