I remember loving the book when I was young and feeling a bit meh about the miniseries, but when I rewatched it a couple years ago with my daughter, she was totally grossed out. I think she was 19 or so. Maybe it was the casting? And I had to rethink why I ever liked it to begin with. Most of the movies of my youth/young adulthood (mid-80s) creep me out now. My kids even more. Like Sixteen Candles and Revenge of the Nerds, etc. Just gross stuff. It's no wonder things are so f'ed up. Misogyny, patriarchy, women constantly fondled, belittled, ick. Sorry, not directly TB related. Carry on.

I was in college when the book came out. I read it and hated it. A month or so later, my appendix ruptured and when I woke after surgery, I saw my mom sitting next to me reading the book. I still hate the story, but I get the warm fuzzies from the memory of my mom.

I was so happy when this e-book went on sale for $1.99 soon after I got my Kindle. I hardly read the romantic parts but the details about how they lived and worked, what they wore, what they ate, etc. are so descriptive. I can read those sections over and over. From the very beginning when she describes the doll and how her mother purchased it I was sucked in by her writing style. I think Father Ralph was so blinded by ambition and so arrogant that he didn't consider his feelings for Meggie could have been anything nefarious. "Grooming" is the perfect word. He didn't recognize he had fallen in love because he didn't think anything could be stronger than his devotion to the Church. Does anyone remember that article someone posted here when Colleen McCullough died? It was about an awful obituary someone wrote. Ridiculous obituary aside, Colleen McCullough was a fascinating person. Here's the thread but the original article appears to be gone. 2peasrefugees.boards.net/thread/17077/rip-fat-egotistical-ugly-woman

How many on this thread love Game of Thrones?
Guess how old Daenerys was when she became Khaleesi? And then by the end of the series after she had sex with multiple men and women?
(13 when she married Khal Drogo and then 15-16 by then end)

The 1980s were the height of the bodice ripper romance novels. Lots of things were acceptable then that are not now.

Dh and I have been watching the Australia version of Married at First Site and am strangely reminded of The Thorn Birds. I bought it from Google to watch while I'm doing crafts. I'm amazed at all the different accents they use in it. Some are from Ireland, New Zealand, Australia but many American accents.

(13 when she married Khal Drogo and then 15-16 by then end) Interesting. I read the first novel but watched the show, and I didnt know this. Obv in the show she appeared (or was) older. I also just finished watching The Spanish Princess on Starz, and found out the mother of King Henry VII was only 12 when she was married and 13 when he was born!!!!!!! Gross. I assumed that was to ensure there was time for a male heir to be born, and bc life expectancy was so short (still not saying it was right). In this case, supposedly it was one of the greatest mini-series/love stories of all time, so I really thought it was going to be more about the priest wrestling with his love of God vs love of a woman. I was truly shocked at Meggie's age (I thought she would have been an adult, not meeting her as a child) and Ralph's ambition to rise in the Church. I am enjoying this discussion, sorry if I have ruined it for anyone by my question! ETA: I also just read Clan of the Cave bear, another great 1980s hit, LOL, and Aya was extremely young when she was brutalized too. Again, I assumed it was bc of the times and the lifespan of a neanderthal....

What was another book that was steamy around 1978/79 and was very popular. I can't remember the name of it. I had to hide those books from my parents! are you talking about Lace?? I had that book and also hid it i think...

Kind of? Nothing happens until she’s older but it’s clear they had a weird relationship from the beginning. It’s not illegal but it’s highly questionable. Like a teacher who marries their student years later. My husband's grandfather was his grandmother's high school teacher! I think he was a young teacher and they got married after she graduated. I'm not sure the details, like how soon after graduation did they get married. She is 98 now!

Again, I assumed it was bc of the times and the lifespan of a neanderthal.... I just started rereading the books (I just finished rereading the Harry Potter series) a week ago. I read them all when the series started 9 years ago. Anyhow, I did a double-take when it is made clear that Dany was 13 when she was sold to Khal Drogo to be his wife. I knew that she was young, but had forgotten exactly how young. So, I’m pretty clear on that. Yes, they made Khaleesi seem older in the HBO series. They had to know that the optics of a 13 y.o. bride married to an older man weren’t good.

I haven’t read it in many years, but I loved the book, and am dismayed to consider this. My first reaction was surely not, even if he is a priest . But then I recalled another book written by Colleen McCullough called Tim, where an older woman falls in love and has an affair with a handsome, virile young man called Tim. The issue is that Tim has learning difficulties, and although he is 24, he has a mental age of about 8... I remember Tim. I read the book and saw the movie. I was not a fan of Thorn Birds. It didn’t interest me much.
