I remember reading it in 1972. I was in 8th grade and hid it between my mattress and box spring so my mum wouldn't see it.
I bought a copy 15+ years ago thinking of sharing it with our then 13-15 yo daughter and I thought I would reread it first.
I HAVE A VIVID MEMORY of a VERY DISTURBING scene in the book that is not in the later version. Did I dream it? Or do you also remember this ghastly part...
(I want to write what it is but don't know how to do a spoiler alert.)

My Mom gave it to me to read when I was about 12 or 13. (I was a voracious reader and she never limited what I was allowed to read). She wanted me to read it so that hopefully it would scare me into not doing drugs. It did it's job. Running away and doing drugs was something I never contemplated doing. She would also wake me up after I went to sleep if there was a special on about drugs/runaways/rape etc.. and have me watch it. I really don't know why she was so worried. I was the "good" child that was always worried about consequences and hated getting in trouble.
Yes, there is a disturbing part in the book, but who knows if anyone now would think it's that disturbing. The world is so desensitized now that it might just be "normal" and something people expect. As crappy as that sounds, unfortunately I think it's true.

Just a reminder that although Go Ask Alice was published as a true story, it’s complete fiction. Beatrice Sparks fabricated the account along with her later “true stories” about teenage Satanists and other sensational fairy tales to push a conservative agenda.
Edit: I’m not saying that people shouldn’t read it, on the contrary, this would be an excellent opportunity to dissect propaganda and fearmongering with your daughter.

I didn't read the book but saw the made-for-TV movie. I cried hysterically for an hour afterwards. And I was 24 years old! I called my boyfriend in hysterics and he thought someone had died. Well, they had.

The awful scene I remember vividly from reading back in 72 is one in which Alice is stoned and babysitting. She puts the baby in a roasting pan and into the oven!
Did I really dream that up? It certainly did not appear in the book I bought around 2005!

I read it after the movie came out and didn’t believe it. Teenybopper me used to argue with friends about it. Ooh, I made them mad. Thank you for helping me learn I won an argument I’d completely forgotten I’d ever had.
