I ended up in the ER last evening with horrible pain. I had stones before so I thought that was what it would be but it was a lot more painful than previously. Plus I had VSG surgery two months ago so I was worried something else might be going on since it was so much more painful. The CAT scan verified it's a 5mm stone. They gave me morphine and nausea meds. I slept til 4 am and was woken up by pain. I feel a lot better now but still feel "something" more like a punch in the gut rather than an alien is ripping out my insides.
My question is how do I know for sure when it passes. I could never tell with the others, I just felt better after a few days.

Most of the time they give you a strainer to pee in to catch the stone and some send to lab to see what it is made of to find out why one is creating them as there are different reasons depending on composition, but if they didn't tell you to strain your urine, then I would watch for it to be in the bottom of the toilet before flushing. Some move back up into the kidney and grow bigger, then have to be surgically moved, so it might be important to know if it passed.
Sorry you are going thought this, not fun. Hope you get better soon.

I got sent home with a strainer. Try the dollar tree. Also, my kidney Dr told me to eat lemons, as much as you can. Even try to get the oils from the skin. The acid breaks up the stones. Hope you feel better soon.

I've only had one stone (knock on wood...) but I was already feeling better before I passed the stone. If I hadn't been using the strainer I might not have known that I had passed it.

I do have some lemons I'll add that to the water they told me to drink. I have a friend who drinks fresh lemon water all day long! It does help with him not getting stones! Oh and when lemons are cheap you can squeeze them and freeze the juice!

I've had several now. Either pee through a very fine strainer, or pee into something else (32oz plastic cup works good for me) and then look for the stone before pouring it out. My understanding is that 5mm is considered the top end of what they expect to pass on your own, so if the pain comes back and you can't get anywhere with it, you may consider going back to the hospital.

Ya know because the pain goes away.....🤔 I had a kidney stone 4mm for 3 months. It was hell. I drank tons of water, lemonade, slept with a heating pad. 2 surgeries later and a stent they finally got the damn thing out.

When I had a 5mm stone and some smaller ones, they went in and broke them up. I can't imagine passing it.

I’ve had them twice. I think they may want you to have lithotripsy to break it up. 5mm is big... and if you are passing that, you better have some big pain killers on hand and don’t let the painkillers out of your sight until you know the stone is passed

I've had several. I passed a 7mm one last year. I landed in the ER with that one. When they asked me my pain level my answer was making hard labour a 10, I'll take 6 babies. I could hardly breathe. They had me in xrays and ultra sound and onto a drip so fast I was afraid I was dying. Apparently I'm hilarious while on morphine. 😉
Anyway, per my urologist, the pain comes from the stone passing into the ureter. It blocks that opening and the back pressure that causes is what the excruciating pain is. Once the body figures out that it needs to temporarily shut down that kidney, it relaxes a bit allowing the stone to make its way thru the ureter to the bladder. By the time it hits the bladder, it usually been worn down a bit, so it's a bit smaller as it enters your urethra and flushes out with your urine. Typically the larger the stone the longer the whole process. The ureter has a couple of bends the stone needs to navigate. A large stone can aggravate the ureters at those bends causing there to be blood in your urine.
Kidney stones are no fun. I wish you a speedy passing and no repeat performance.

I had to use a strainer. Mine actually only hurt badly for about 3 days, then I was actually able to go to work. I think the moving around helped get it moving, and I actually passed it at work. I felt when I passed it but just as a sharp twinge.
The funny thing was since I was at work, I had to drag my strainer along with me all the (more frequent than normal) times I had to go. When I came back every time, someone would ask if I passed it. When I finally did pass it, I just kind of yelled it down the hall and everyone cheered. It had become a team effort by that point, lol.
