I didn't realise they were so bad..... stay safe everyone! One of my 8th graders asked about the fires in the morning this past week and I pulled up a map for them and shared it.... the whole center part of the state had fires! It was crazy! His response was "Wow! California is the new Australia". It made me pause, he's so right. There are sooooo many fires right now! At one point last week, I read 367 burning and very little progress being made because it was so hot.

Frazzled Mom please stay safe! I've seen the looting videos from that area! Several of my friends from high school (I grew up in Fremont) and college (CSUMB) have been evacuated from their homes in the area as well. Many are saying that as soon as they can get back in they are headed in to help defend against looters. I'm in western Calaveras County and we're good at the moment other than lots of nasty smoke in the air. I'm hoping this next round of lightning forecasted won't add us to the list of people fleeing. There isn't really anywhere to go! It's horrible. Bringing back memories of the Butte Fire that was up here several years back.

The sucky part is the law abiding people are staying away, while the looters are sneaking in and stealing. It's the Santa Cruz mountains - you cannot keep everyone out of a forest with trails and private roads.

I'm in Southern California, we had a fire in my area last week (5 minutes away). Thankfully that one is out already.
My brother lives in Northern California, Santa Cruz, and he and his family left an hour before mandatory evacuations were ordered. He is hoping to return home at some point. He is now at mom's house.
This summer heat is horrible.

We are fine in Sacramento Co, just smoke and some ash in the air. One of my sister's from Santa Rosa is at my house since last Wednesday--this is her 3rd evacuation sine 2017. My other sister in Santa Rosa (lost her home in the Tubbs fire in 2017 and just moved back to her new rebuilt home in Coffey Park)-- is still there and waiting, hoping for the best. I have another sister in Forestville that is under mandatory evacuation--her DH says they are packed but not leaving yet. Which I think is really stupid since she lives on a narrow dirt road going up a hillside.....

I live close to the mountains but in the desert. Our air quality has been the pits this week--and I've tried to stay in because of that and the terrible heat. It's been so hot it is really stealing my energy. The Lake fire is the closest to us, and it is currently about 40% contained. I am praying for everybody that is affected! California is such a beautiful state, it's sad to see the fires do so much destruction.

More lightning storms are in the forecast. I’m very nervous in the Oakland Hills.

I’m almost afraid to go to sleep because thing may be significantly worse in the morning. Received several Nixel warnings in a short period and the evacuation warnings are creeping closer and closer. many of the unincorporated areas near me are removing their livestock tonight.

My parents live in mission San Jose (warning goes along 680 and mission Blvd past ohlone college) a few blocks from the warning area. My sister lives in Livermore, a few blocks from the warning area. I will call my parents tomorrow. My sister is in Texas visiting my other sisters family right now. They’re not due back for a few weeks. This is so crazy! My parents house is PACKED with stuff. They’d never know what the hell to grab.

I live in Vacaville, which is currently on fire with 15% containment. I live in southeast Vacaville and the fires are in the northwest part of town but at one point, they were evacuating half of our town. The fire grew so quickly and people were evacuated in the wee hours with nothing except the clothes they were wearing. I know personally a handful of people, who have lost their homes. All of them lived up in the hills. It’s awful to see and know they lost everything. My parents and some friends evacuated to our house. The evacuation orders weren’t lifted until about 2:00 on Thursday. Travis AFB is even further south than us and the commander evacuated the base. I don’t think that has ever happened before. Today was a little, better but the smell of smoke burns your eyes quickly. There is ash absolutely eveywhere. It made the streets look like they had snow on them.
We are now under a warning of dry lightening storms Sunday through Wednesday, which scary since lightening is what cause the current fires. The temperatures have cooled from 111 to 98-99 so that has helped as well.

My younger brother is in mountain view California and isn't saying much. He said they were lightheaded from smoke 2 days ago...! He is smart but has only lived in CA for 2 years. Any reassurance? Where can I read about his area? This is scary because I dont know the area or terrain. I hope everyone can get a fresh breath somehow. California is so beautiful but seems so dangerous now. I had to evacuate Tuesday night and am in a hotel not too far from Mountain View. The air quality isn't great, but no danger of fire there at this point. I live in the Santa Cruz mountains and our area was hard hit. Fire crews are spread too thin because they usually use "volunteer" prison labor and this year that was prevented because of COVID19. While a house on my street burned, there were just no fire crews available to come up and help. Neighbors who had snuck back to retrieve possessions tried to use hoses to help, but now the water pipes are melted and the tank drained so there is NO water at all. More houses have been lost but we can't get clear info about which ones. Resources are being used to save the town and any historical or defensible structures. Those of us with homes up in the mountains will have to rely on luck at this point But fire is unpredictable and there's just no way of knowing what if anything has survived because, if you'll pardon my bad attitude - some people just SUCK! There has been so much residential looting that police have now blocked all incoming roads to try and protect the evacuated homes. It takes a special kind of scum bag to rob people facing these fires. Keep a good thought for all those who've been displaced and are going through the torture of waiting for news and for those who've lost everything... I hope your home stays safe. I am glad you are safe! I agree - there should be a special place in hell for looters of evacuated properties.

My parents house is PACKED with stuff. They’d never know what the hell to grab. That's what happened to us. With two homes each filled with a lifetime's worth of belongings, it's overwhelming. We were so concerned with getting my partner's 80 year olld mom and her med stuff from next door as well as the two cats that we weren't able to grab anything else but a few random clothing items and toothbrushes. I know it's not safe, but I understand why people were sneaking back into the fire area. Not those getting their tech gadgets and expensive stuff, but those getting the unreplaceable items. If our house burns, I will lose every photo of my children from birth to the last few years, every ceramic gift and card they made me in grade school, their baby clothes and special toys, the last two photos of my mom and her religious medal that she never took off, the quilts and blankets my grandmother made, every scrapbook, etc. The jewelry and art and collectibles are nothing but an afterthought... I admit that we tried to go back yesterday to save some of those things when the first wave of fire seemed to spare our homes, but we couldn't get through. Too little, too late as my mom would say.

I'm in the middle of San Jose and will not be evacuated. If that happened, that means most of the city will have burned down and 2 million people would be jamming the roads.
The air quality sucks but it has also been all over the place. Two nights ago it was down to 20 because of winds so it was nice to get out. Yesterday afternoon it almost got up to 200. I gauge it based on how well I can see the mountains out my kitchen window (and an app).
My parents are at Lake Almanor and there are two fires near there as well, so their AQ also sucks but due to different fires. I gave them a call. They had just gotten back from mass and were sitting on the back deck having drinks saying it wasn't too bad. Ah welll they are both around 80, it great health, and will do what works for them.

Thankfully he isn’t being stubborn, and they are ready to go if ordered/needed. I hope this suggestion might help someone, but way back when my DH joined the military in 1989, a senior Officer gave the best advice. Take pictures of irreplaceable things. It really hit home that advice when a whole ship load of household goods spilled into Tokyo harbor. Thankfully our stuff was ok, but plenty of families lost precious items. I keep the old school pictures and negatives, and the current thumb drive in a place that can be grabbed. I know it’s not the same as an actual object, but with way to many military moves under my belt, not having that one extra worry was nice.
