It seems the fires across the state are getting worse, and Cal Fire has stated there is not enough man-power to fight all these fires simultaneously. Supposedly the prison population is a large volunteer force for Cal Fire, and supposedly many are sick due to COVID. So it could get way worse.
Just wanted to make a thread to check-in with everyone and see how everyone is doing, and if you’re preparing to leave, or have left yet. Stay safe!

Not evacuated and there are not any fires putting my house in danger this time around.
The prison fire fighers are a huge part of Cal Fire's ground effort and I read earlier this year many of the camps were disbanded because of Covid. I knew then that we'd be in trouble.

newson ordered calfire to hire more people because he knew the inmates would not be available. so he hired 830 people so far. part of the problem is that we haven't had this many major fires at once.. 23.. and because it is hot all over.. there is less mutual aid available.. they even got some crews in from texas. and the access to some of these fires is impossible.
so the helicopters and planes can't do as an effective as a job. since I live in SF the city.. I am pretty safe in all the concrete. I also have a plan if I had to leave due to earthquake or something.
keep safe everyone!!!

I'm a good distance from the fires currently burning but I expect more will start over the weekend. Headlines yesterday warned all California residents to be prepared to evacuate. Should fires start elsewhere, there won't be enough resources since they are spread so thin.

I hope everyone stays safe! Take care!
I usually don't worry about fires until the Santa Ana's kick up in Sept and Oct. This is so scary!

The fire near me in southern Ca is a little over 90% contained now. I am about 20 min away.
Sadly a fireman pilot of a helicopter died in a crash.

Prayers for all those affected by the fires all across the United States and to keep the firefighters safe. My nephew is a Hot Shot in Utah fighting fires there. We have them here in Colorado. It is nuts! Stay safe! {{{hugs}}}

We aren't in any danger right now where we live but the air quality is horrendous. The temps are still in the 100 range for the next few days and we can't turn on the A/C because it brings the smoke into the house. I fear for older people and those with asthma/breathing issues.

We don’t have any nearby fires but are getting the bad air here.
I would pretty much just walk away from it all if we had to evacuate. I have dozens of scrapbooks ... not going to deal with those. A few photos, a few small antiques, my electronics, and some clean underwear ... that’s all I’d probably grab.
Keep your gas tanks filled.

Yin Ranch was burned down, one of many homes in Vacaville. CC Yin came to this country with only a $100 and has become owner of many McDonald's franchises in the Bay Area. He has opened their home to many community groups for retreats and events and has donated PPEs to frontliners. I met him, a very nice man. There are a couple other people I know that is evacuating as well.

According to the Accuweather forecast our air quality index for the next 3 days is Friday-156 Saturday-298 Sunday-821
I can’t even imagine.
We have a lightening strike complex fire (9miles away) that is smaller than many and has been lumped with multiple other fires in the county. I know it’s still at 0% containment, but not getting specific updates.

My younger brother is in mountain view California and isn't saying much. He said they were lightheaded from smoke 2 days ago...! He is smart but has only lived in CA for 2 years. Any reassurance? Where can I read about his area? This is scary because I dont know the area or terrain. I hope everyone can get a fresh breath somehow. California is so beautiful but seems so dangerous now.

My good friend's sister's house was destroyed, in or near Santa Cruz. The people are safe, thankfully, but it sounds like their whole neighborhood was more or less wiped out.
Please stay safe, everyone!

DH's niece just texted us that they evacuated from their home in the Santa Cruz Mountains to DH's sister's house in the Bay Area. They live in a beautiful but remote area and there just aren't enough fire fighters to fight so they are letting the houses burn.

I'm in the next suburb near Mountain View (I live in Sunnyvale) and we're just very smoky here. There's little chance we'll have fires here but they are literally all around us. We were just in the Santa Cruz mountains camping this weekend and the area we camped in is evacuated and burning. My younger brother is in mountain view California and isn't saying much. That is very kind of you to post and reassuring that you don't think the fire will reach there. Luckily he and his GF are young and don't have asthma and they have a car but the whole thing is making me feel claustrophobic on the Californian's behalf. I hope it will just suddenly rain or something will improve.

I hope it will just suddenly rain or something will improve. Sadly, it was an unusual thunder/lightning/rain storm that caused most of the fires. We typically don't get rain this time of year.

I have lived in the Bay Area my entire life (except for college). I have never been this scared. We live right above where the Santa Cruz fire is, we'll be the next evacuation zone if the fire turns north. The storm was terrifying. There was a period of time when the strikes were happening every 10-15 seconds. I was just watching them out the window coming down behind the tree line. We moved all our irreplaceable down to my parent's house. Our go-bags are packed and ready. We are watching all the alerts carefully.
I just got an alert that there is possibly another monsoon storm (more lightning) coming Sunday-Tuesday. Hopefully, it will contain more rain and less lightning.

I am in Sonoma County, but not in danger to have to evacuate. However, many coworkers are evacuated and the smoke is awful. We have had major fires since the huge one in 2017 but normally in Oct/Nov. This is unprecedented. Every time Nixle alerts go off my heart jumps. I can't imagine how our local firefighters feel having been through this so much in the past 4 years.

our air is smoky and we are staying inside. mountainview is east of the fires burning in santa cruz/big basin area and it is highly urban, so there will be smoke, unlikely fire also, mountainview is next to the bay.. away from the ocean.
I have friends who are evacuated and may have lost homes. the two girl scout camps I use for training classes seem to be lost, though we don't know yet.
I'm afraid on the other side there will be little camping left within the bay area.

Where can I read about his area? This is scary because I dont know the area or terrain. I hope everyone can get a fresh breath somehow. California is so beautiful but seems so dangerous now. I had to evacuate Tuesday night and am in a hotel not too far from Mountain View. The air quality isn't great, but no danger of fire there at this point. I live in the Santa Cruz mountains and our area was hard hit. Fire crews are spread too thin because they usually use "volunteer" prison labor and this year that was prevented because of COVID19. While a house on my street burned, there were just no fire crews available to come up and help. Neighbors who had snuck back to retrieve possessions tried to use hoses to help, but now the water pipes are melted and the tank drained so there is NO water at all. More houses have been lost but we can't get clear info about which ones. Resources are being used to save the town and any historical or defensible structures. Those of us with homes up in the mountains will have to rely on luck at this point But fire is unpredictable and there's just no way of knowing what if anything has survived because, if you'll pardon my bad attitude - some people just SUCK! There has been so much residential looting that police have now blocked all incoming roads to try and protect the evacuated homes. It takes a special kind of scum bag to rob people facing these fires. Keep a good thought for all those who've been displaced and are going through the torture of waiting for news and for those who've lost everything...
