Years and years ago I had scanned a ton of photos and burned them to cds and also backed them up on external hard drives. Glad I didn't toss them at that point. CDs were corrupted and unreadable files within a couple of years, and the hard drive failed.
Now, with great awareness of our wildfire risk, I want to digitize as many pix as I can as quickly as I can.
I used to say our kids, 32 and 30, didn't care about things like family photos, because they didn't. But yesterday as I was sorting through a long ago packed box of things to grab when evacuating, I found two mini albums. Used my camera to take photos of the photos and texted them to the kids with commentary. We had a blast. So now this feels URGENT!
Can you help?

If you don't have time to scan them, maybe you could photograph them with your phone or DLSR camera. ETA: I see that you did that with some, but it may be quicker to do than scanning with all of them.

I'd ideally love to scan them and have them in good shape, but once I get my GO BAG packed and some other must dos taken care of, maybe I'll go through as many of our mountain of photos as I can and at least capture the ones that make me smile the most/ trigger the best memories that way. Side note. While it's fun and I love looking at old pix of the kids, it's a bit unnerving to see how much I've aged in 20 years! BIG difference from 40 to almost 60! And it's true what they say, we don't tend to appreciate our bodies/selves at the stage we're at... looking back, I should have been very confident in my appearance. I need to remember... I'm not going to get any younger and not likely any more beautiful. so I'd better be more grateful for what I look like now...

I've used an app (Photoscan) to scan photos in frames or too big for my scanner. It does a decent job but it's not like a true scanner. I bought a scanner that scanned fast and easy - I had over 10,000 photos to scan. I had a few vintage ones that I needed to use my flatbed scanner for but it handled pretty much everything from bitty little photos (maybe 2" square?) to 8x10 and also scans documents. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZJH63M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Side note. And it sounds super fast! Did you edit any of the pix? Upload to "the cloud"?

I've put all of them up on Google Drive to share with my sister and children (they are the photos from my mum's house 1880s-2019) and I've printed copies of some (nothing big - I think 8x10 was the largest but mostly 4x6ish) to share with relatives. I haven't really done editing yet - I'm still working on dating, identifying, and organising. They are currently on Google Drive, on my second internal hard drive, on an external hard drive, and backed up automatically by Carbonite PSA PLEASE label your photos with people's names and the date, please, please, please

I like photomyne.. they have good facebook page too. it is super easy on your phone, you can colorize pictures.. they also have an app for slides. You can scan them under a black umbrella to control for shadows, I have used it on all sorts of photos new and old and for photos in albums. then I save the photo (you can scan front and back), send to my computer, save to photos, and it is in the cloud on my iphone.

Being a former pro photographer I'm picky about quality and for me I've used and love scancafe.com They are a business that you send your photos, slides and/or negatives to, and they hand scan and inspect each one and scan them. They started with just a facility overseas (I think in India) but for the past several years now have one in Indiana. You can choose which facility you want to send your photos too and they are tracked so you don't have to worry about them getting lost in the mail.
I have a large collection of older family photos-my father was an avid photographer when I was a little girl. DH used to work at a camera shop and knows all about the business and tech end. We talked about buying a scanner but decided by the time we bought one that suited our needs (one large enough for the results we wanted) we'd spend less using Scan Cafe and save time too.
That could be an option for you too. They offer a value kit where they send you a box and you can fill it with up to 500 photos for a set price-that would be the fastest option for you if you have that many. If not they also offer a piece by piece price option-for photos it is a photo up to 8x10 for 37 cents a scan. This applies to negatives and slides too.
I hope you find a solution for your precious photos and I'm so glad you made the decision to hang on to them. It gives me an ache inside when I hear of folks throwing theirs away-you just never know what might happen.
