My DD (almost 14) got more out of puberty than a period! She had board straight hair, and now it's so far from straight, I can't see! We have been to a couple of stylists and of course, she leaves there happy, but we need help that WE can do! She doesn't mind that it is curly (or rather she has accepted it as truth) but, the triangle affect she gets after the hair dries leaves her very sad and self conscious. People are mean and say awful things to her. She is an introvert - this isn't helping! Can the Refupeas help us? Please! Some photos for reference: ![]() ![]() PHOTOS WONT POST! ![]() ![]()

She should only wash her scalp never the hair There are tons of products for curly hair. You need to find one that doesn't dry her hair.
My son used frizz ease products.

As far as getting her hair cut, the most important thing to me (my hair is curly but not super-curly like hers) is to find someone who will cut it dry. That way you know what it will look like. I know all about the pyramid of hair - it is no fun.
Look around Pinterest for some curly haircuts that appeal, and be sure to either bring a printout or be able to show it on your phone.
I forgot to say that my hair changed during puberty, too. It had a long wave pattern before. Now I'm wondering what will happen to me once menopause hits. Yikes.

I've never had curly hair so I cannot offer styling tips.
As an alternative, she can have a keratin hair treatment which will give her board straight silky hair. My hair changed during menopause and became wavy but not from root to tip (think Bozo the clown hair) so I have this treatment done by a professional every 4 months. She comes to my home and charges $125. The brand she uses is Lasio. Salons charge a lot more so you might have to shop around.

I agree with finding someone who knows how to cut curly hair - cut it dry.
Don't brush it or comb it.
Find curly hair products that work for her.
Look into the no poo method.
Consider not using any heat on it.

Deva Curl products work great for curly hair. Check out their website and see if they have a recommended salon nearby. Their stylists have been trained to cut curly hair. Also, only use a hairdryer on cool, with a diffuser, if you have to dry it. Long layers will usually help with the triangle effect (yes, unfortunately I am too familiar with this undesired effect!). By 'triangle effect' do you mean how her hair is shaped? I always called it 'mushroom head.' That is more the cut than the styling. Did they put layers in her hair? I've always had my hair layered. When it gets the mushroom look I know I need a trim, shorter layers toward the top. Just know that curly hair has a mind of it's own too. Some days my hair will curl up to my shoulders, other days it hangs mid-back. It's almost down to my waist when wet. I style it the same way every day.

naturallycurly.com and devacurl are the two authorities on curly hair. the "mushroom" haircut is typical from a stylist that doesn't know what to do with curly hair. Hopefully you can find a stylist in your area that knows what they are doing.
And no poo is not using shampoo. Just a conditioner wash. I don't know that a teenager could do it.

That was me too at that age, and I fought "triangle hair" for many years. I found that the longer my hair was, the more the curl pulled out so I could avoid the triangle, but shoulder length is a no-go. A pony is a poof, but it's a cute look too. Don't dry her hair with towels, it adds frizz. Pat dry with an old t-shirt, trust me... it works. Use leave in conditioners and let air dry. Other than wearing it curly, there are some great straightening tools out there. I use a big round brush and a quality blow-dryer, and dry it straight. The upside of this is that naturally curly hair has great body with a blow out. I also have a top of the line hair straightener with a oil mist. Agave Vapor Iron

I got a lot of great info from the Curly Girl book (before the website was available). I have my hair cut in layers to avoid the triangle, and it needs to be cut dry so it doesn't end up being too short when it dries. I only wash my hair once a week; I let it air dry. She may be able to "straighten" some of the curl by using velcro curlers in damp hair.
Find someone that cuts curly hair- preferably someone WITH curly hair who knows what products really work.

I wish I had better products as a teenager, I feel for her. and I have bright red hair. I started straightening it when I was a Jr in high school. I agree with the cut it dry.Especially with 'kinky' curly hair. All my sisters and SIL have the kinky curly hair. Mine's not really kinky curly but wavy or it goes totally frizzy. I've tried to leave it curly and sometimes it works when it's long but i have to use the Catwalk stuff this CatwalkCurlCollection There was another I get it's clear I can't remember the name of it. I'll have to think about it. Now I straighten it 99% of the time.
