"Sydney Sutherland, 25, was reported missing on August 19 after she failed to return home from an afternoon jog and she was found dead near her home in Newport, Arkansas on Friday. Third generation farmer Quake Lewellyn, 28, of Jonesboro, was charged with her murder. On Monday police said during a probable cause hearing that Lewellyn spotted Sutherland on the highway as he was driving, doubled back, and abducted her then drove three miles away to a farm to rape her." heavy.com/news/2020/08/sydney-sutherland/How did his tiny pee brain think he was going to get away with this?!? Between DNA evidence, cell phone data, etc. And when will women be free of the constant threat from sick twisted men? Cue the MRAs and misogynists: What was she wearing? She shouldn't be running alone....... This article came up in the google search: "But she admitted running alone is a big risk, and said its always better to find someone to go with you. "Socially distanced obviously, but run with a person most of the time if you can," she said. “If you’re new to Little Rock or if you’ve been running here and want to take up running, join your local running club." If you do have to run by yourself, Pharis recommended running close to home. Know your route, and have somebody else know your route and when you’re going and when you’re expected back. "Don't run the same time every time and don't run the same course every time, just for the fact that somebody might be stalking you," Pharis said. Places like the River Trail are also good because it's rarely vacant. Find places where you know you will always be surrounded by people and not in a secluded area...." www.thv11.com/article/news/local/keeping-safe-while-running-outside/91-c79957ee-5a55-432c-b89a-edb4ef19c083Perhaps because we spend a lot of time teaching our daughters how to not get raped and less time teaching our sons not to rape.

This is close to me and really close to where my ODS lives. This is a very rural area. Farmland for miles. Not the sharpest tools in the sheds either. Please do not think all of them are dumb but farm people in AR just think a bit different. He was even helping with the search. I don't know why he decided he needed to 'fess up. I think they were getting ready to go search the area around his farm due to the phone pinging and maybe the info they were getting from her Apple watch.
And yes, I even saw on some of the FB posts the question "why was she running alone?" Because, a small community, you know everyone...
ETA: The quote about running in Little Rock, this young woman lived in Newport, which is 1.5ish hours north of LR. I live just south of LR. I wouldn't drive up to LR just to run(if I ran, which I don't). Finding those "safe, non-vacant" running trails and parks just don't happen here. I do know a long distance runner here that is always training for marathons. I have talked to her about her runs and routes. They are in what would be considered "safe" areas but some traverse a rural area. She tries not to run alone but sometimes doesn't have the choice. The bottom line is there are sick people out there and they would find you(the victim) no matter where you ran.

Yes, it would be a wonderful world where women would not have to worry about their safety. But unfortunately you have to be your own safety advocate and therefore, women should be very careful about where they jog and consider jogging with a friend.

As a runner, this makes me so very sad and angry for her. I hope he gets the book thrown at him. Several times.

But “society” will have you believe a wall is what will keep your hot pocket safe 🤷🏾♀️Or that police actually protect citizens and prevent real crimes

How about instead of (or in addition to) the incessant "Here's how to stay safe while running, ladies" "news" articles, we have just as many (or 10x more) articles entitled "Women's bodies are not yours, men" "Just because you see something you like, it doesn't mean you can have it, men." "You are not entitled to sex, men"

I didn't really see anything misogynistic about the comments in the second article. The woman who made them didn't even direct them specifically to women runners. She certainly didn't comment on anyone's jogging apparel. I appreciate the woman's comments. She's not telling women to quit running. She's just reminding everyone of what steps they can take to make jogging safer.
I freely admit that I would worry much more about my daughter going out for a late night jog than I worry about my son doing the same thing. Bad things could happen to either one of them such as being attacked by a dog or being hit by a drunk driver. Statistically, however, my daughter is much more likely to be assaulted than my son. I don't think being aware of that fact and warning my daughter to be extra careful makes me a misogynist.
I do think it is always wrong to blame the victim for his/her rape. Rape is never justified under any circumstances. I don't think there is anything wrong, however, in saying "these are the reasonable steps you can take to lesson your chances of being the victim of rape."

When I saw this headline I thought it was a story about a sentencing because I swear there was a nearly identical story last year about a young woman kidnapped while running whose body was later found buried on a nearby farm. Maybe a different state. It's terrible it happened again.

My prediction is that we'll find out he's a far-right, incel, "proud boy" type guy who wanted to punish women for rejecting him.

The only way I would run or walk in a remote location is if I had a small gun with me. You can't change human nature. Some people are simply evil whether born today or 200 years ago. Stuff like this has been happening since the beginning of time. Not in as high % in other developed nations. That's just "give up" thinking. Let's figure out what the underlying differences are and why the US sees so much more violence than our sibling nations.

This was a middle of the day run, if I am not mistaken.
My ODS just called me at lunch on some other subjects. As he has some nursing friends, he has heard some "talk". There is more to this guy than the press is releasing. Some major issues. His wife had already kicked him out of the house. I am curious if it will all come out.

We saw a VERY similar story on either Dateline or 48 hours a year or so ago. When I began reading this one, I checked the date because I thought it might be the same case.

I walked every morning between 5 and 6 AM in our neighborhood....did that for 25+ years. The only time I was ever frightened was one morning when a slow moving car had no lights on and came up. Turned out it was a police officer. I can only guess he was checking something suspicious. I think I said to him that he scared me, but I can't remember.

This. Jackson County, AR is in the Delta. Very rural, lots of farm land. That can be said for a majority of that region. She shouldn't be blamed for running alone. He would have killed if someone was with her. Hell, there might have been 2 murders being discussed.

The men who would listen to those sorts of messages would probably never think of assaulting women (or anyone else) in the first place. I have no idea what can be done to change things. But it’s gross and sad and horrific that things like this happen.

There are a lot of crazies out there. And men rape women. That fact that won't change and hasn't changed in the past thousand years. We have to be proactive and not let ourselves be found alone in remote areas. Period.
Now - this is not to say this is her FAULT, because it is not. It is solely this loser's fault.

I run 90% of the time alone. I go out hiking and running on very remote, long trails but I’m not going to stop or live in fear.

My daughter is in cross country and volleyball. Since practices are at the same time she goes to vb practice and then needs to run on her own time. Our town is small so even running the parameter of it won't get her to the number of miles she needs to run so I have caught her a few times running on the highway out of town or the gravel roads leading out of town. It freaks me out because all I can think about it Mollie Tibbets and now this woman too. She carries her phone and pepper spray but I don't feel like it is enough. I watch her dot move on Life 360 the entire time but still I'm not going to be able to know if someone grabs her and even if I did feel something was off on her route it would be too late before that phone is ditched. I can't wait until mid-October when cross country is over.

A news article I read said he was someone she knew but didn’t state the connection between them. The situation is awful enough to begin with but knowing he was someone she knew (and potentially trusted) makes this even worse to me. I hope he rots.

The last time I ran in the dark was, well, the last time I ran in the dark... I convinced myself there was a rapist or a werewolf behind every clump of grass and started running as fast as I could, tripped on a crack in the sidewalk and skinned my knee, got back up and started running faster because I freaked myself out even though I was laughing at myself! Then I'm a few blocks from home and notice a car slow down and start following me. It was the sheriff doing a night patrol and while he was probably making sure I got home safely, he made me completely nervous tailing me and by the time I got home I decided I was never doing that again. Which is too bad because night running I'm sure is better, being cooler and without the pounding sun. I'm quite sure I was actually safe the entire time, but my mind plays tricks on me.

I run early morning. Luckily there is always a lot of other people out running or bicycling when I am out. One time, I missed my morning run and by the time i could go out running, it was dark. I started out and didn’t feel safe so I called a friend who followed me in her car. That was an experience. I run in a park mostly. If you are out there the same time everyday, you are usually there with the same people. Funny how you get to “know” them. I don’t use the public restrooms because creepy things (hidden cameras, men walking in and peeping in the stall cracks, rape) have happened.
