My DH can’t understand that I don’t feel safe running alone ever. My husband is an avid runner and always has *tips* for me. His tips annoy me at the best of times but especially when they are so clueless to the reasons I do things. Yes, that route is a better HIIT workout, but the only time I have to run is at 4:45am or after 9pm. I plan my routes based on escape plans- how many backyards of people I know and can run into if something is sketchy, by neighbours I know are up early, past gas stations and 24 hour stores, where the newspaper guy is. Same reason I don't run the same days every week, or try to vary the time as much as I can. He was dumbfounded that I would have to plan those things. Of course we have to, and God forbid anything ever happen to me, the first thing anyone will ask is why I was running at that time, alone. I kind of laughed, because he just puts on music and runs and he always comments about how he doesn't have to think or worry about anything when he is running. Everything I do when I run is designed to make me more alert and reactive, it must be nice to run and turn off like that

I don't run, but I do very long walks several times a week. I have only had one scary encounter several years ago. I have pepper spray and a very loud whistle on a lanyard. I also carry my phone with me and always let someone know when and where I'm going walking.
Sometimes it doesn't matter how careful you are. There are always going to be sickos out there. I refuse to live my life in fear.
I am very sorry that is lady had to lose her life to an evil man.

I run early in the morning when it's dark. I see one or two runners and a lot of homeless. I run with my dog, pepper spray and a stun gun. My dog is probably the biggest deterrent, but the others bring me peace of mind.

When I saw this headline I thought it was a story about a sentencing because I swear there was a nearly identical story last year about a young woman kidnapped while running whose body was later found buried on a nearby farm. Maybe a different state. It's terrible it happened again. Happened near here too (in Ohio) 3 or 4 years ago. The girl was riding her bike but some sicko killed her (and did god knows what else) and buried her in a corn field. 😢

Like the poster who described the thought process of her running route to her DH, who never even *has* to think about things like that. It shouldn't happen to anyone, at all, regardless of gender. There probably is more to the story than we know, for sure... but sexual assaults and/or murders don't happen nearly as much by women to men, do they... THAT'S the problem.

Maybe a different state. It's terrible it happened again. Yes. Kansas? Mollie Tibbets abducted and murdered while running in IowaIt was just about this time last year. This made me think of Mollie Tibbits also - and it has been 2 years already since that happened. So sad. I feel so bad for this girl too, and her family. A terrible heartbreaking situation that is so unfair. I check pastures and cows everyday in a very rural area. I am usually on a Gator, sometimes a horse. A strange car will get our attention, but one day I encountered a couple guys just out walking. I texted DH to let him know what was up. I kept on my route. When I got done, he said he couldn't stop thinking about it and drove out to find them. They had camped and were walking back to town (STRANGE!), So he had them hop in the back of his truck and gave them a ride. He said he just wanted them out of the area and away from me. It is so odd to see a strange vehicle, that we write tag numbers down when we see them. It's usually a drug drop, but if something turns up missing on our farm, we at least have some info. Lovely people out there sometimes

I need to find some kind of mace or something to take with me when I ride my bike. Things like this are making me really nervous. Bear spray.

Perhaps because we spend a lot of time teaching our daughters how to not get raped and less time teaching our sons not to rape. I get what you're saying, I really do. I cannot stand victim blaming. I despise the fact that women continue to be raped and murdered by men. But while it continues to happen, I will continue to teach - beg! - my daughter to be sensible and not take risks, not to run alone, not walk home alone at night, not leave a nightclub alone etc etc. It fkn sucks that we have to live this way, but I'd prefer to do whatever it takes to minimise the risk to me or my daughter, than be dead. I wish with all my heart it wasn't this way. And as for that monster Quake Lewellyn, he looks exactly like I imagine whenever I hear the word "incel". I wonder if there were any warning signs that his family missed or ignored? You don't just wake up one day and decided to rape and murder someone.
