My DD was trying to explain the inktober issues to me and I’m Missing some pieces.
Anyone know what happened?

It sounds vaguely familiar. When I searched, this video came up with almost 800,000 views!

Now that I've actually watched, the video, WOW! She could have summed that up easily in four minutes. She gave it a B, okay for beginners, but too pricey for what you get.

Well my DD said someone trademarked it and now there’s some legal drama about people selling their ‘inktober’ works. And the creator tried to explain on reddit that it’s supposed to be for products, not works of art and there’s a reddit about it but I’m not on reddit nor do I have the patience. Apparently some people got nasty online ( what else is new) Some people have stopped doing inktober because of it.
I mean if this guy is the creator of it then why can’t he trademark it? I don’t get the hubub over him trademarking it.
How would trademarking a word prevent anyone from selling a work with that word as a hashtag on IG?
I’m lost
The box looked cool but I’m doubting the $88 value of it. I have plenty of ink and paper so no need anyway. I also don’t sell my work so no worries if I # a few things in October. But I just wanted to understand what happened & why people went nuts.

Well looking at Jake's instagram, people are saying he stole everything from Alphonso Dunn's book. Jake's book has not been published, but there was some pages shown in bookflip? or something like that? So Alphonso did an hour long youtube video about the plagiarism. People are saying Alphonso and Jake teach nothing new. They go over the basics of anyone who does ink drawings. Then other people are saying what Jake stole was the exact same format that Alphonso used in his book and that's the plagiarizing. Then other people are saying look at some 1970's book by Marvel on how to draw comics. Alphonso stole from that.
Hope that helps.
ETA: Now I really need to do something more productive because I don't draw and have never participated in Inktober.

Yeah, I draw but I don’t have the energy for the drama. Guess I’ll just post my drawing as ink drawings if I get to it. 🙄

Thanks for the synopsis link. I saw a comment on one artist's page that she was done with the project.
Wow, that sounds like a really good way to alienate your fanbase. Artists really don't like people who copy their work and make money off it (funny that!) and they can very easily start fresh with a new hashtag.
Last I heard all you need to do an Inktober-type of project was October, a pen, and some paper, and a hashtag to gather people together.
